lines of the day – ‘did you see my hair on that episode, spike city USA’ and talking about when customers used to disregard GV in the shop because they thought he was too young, ‘I used to systematically blueprint on how to humble them’

Classic the line of the day; would love to have been a fly on the wall when those pain-in-the-ass clients got their come-uppance

Good episode. I Really like this theme of the week. You should do shows like this more often.

QOTD: St Michelle, its not bad.

  • Mjs8143

I just graduated from Iowa State University where I took a beverages class this past semester. Thanks to you Gary I ended up with a 105% in the class and the highest grade of 200 people in the class. Also thanks to everyone at Winelibrary and Cindy, I have bought a ton of wine. Tomorrow I will be moving out of my apartment, and I had to rent a Uhaul because I knew my wine collection would take up all of my trunk space. And also, for supermarket wines I really enjoy La Yunta Torrontes and Chateau Ste Michelle Gewurztraminer.

  • I'm a C.K.C.!!! Haha I am turning 20 soon and do not drink at all. I live in Indiana and will be a sophomore at the University of Southern Indiana this fall. Unfortunately we are some what of a small school and do not have a wine program. I am intrested in wine because of the HUGE variety. Since I can't and do not drink, I look around all over the place looking for vary unique sodas, mainly cream soda, and tasting them to see how they compare to name brand stuff.

  • Alexandre-CF

    Hey Gary,
Phenomenal start for the week, that´s a 94+ pts show dude.

QOTD: that´s a hard one, i go for Chilean carmenere, today i say Santa Carolina Reserva Carmenere.

    Cheers

  • laurieinvt

    A. Welcome back!
    B. Vermont?!!! And not even a hello?! 😉
BTW, it was uncomfortably hot and humid here on Saturday- at least by our standards…

  • QOTD: Black Swan Reisling. If I'm having people over for dinner I will almost always pick up a bottle of this, because it goes over so well

  • GV, where you really a punk like that to your customers? Crazy how different you are now… ;0)

QOTD: Clos du Bois Cab. The 03 was awesome and now I just kinda enjoy get them when I'm buying at the grocery store. I tend to get better deals on better wines other places though, so I do that more often.

  • BrianAF

its in virtually every grocery store here, he didn’t ask about the price tag, so take your spirit and shove it.

  • waynooo daaa wino

    DISQUS BLLLLLLLLLLLLLOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOWWWWWWSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    AAAAAAAAH HAAAAA HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

  • Anonymous

Yeah – I do have a connection with a local wine shop and we love wine…

  • QOTD: Nipozzano Chianti – consistent quality year-in/year-out, reasonably priced, good volumes

  • WineGeekChirs

QOTD: Rex Goliath Merlot. Great Price, Good Taste.

  • QOTD: Layer Cake Primivito

  • John__J

qotd Don't really do the supermarket thing. When going for wines in those price ranges I'll always go to a wine shop and get something from a wine from a producer I haven't tried before.
I've had that Cotes du Rhone and I wasn't quite as enthusiastic as you were about it.

  • purplegrillz

HOBNOB chardonnay is downright delicious, brings massive cartoonlike buttered toast thunder. the first wine I ever thought actually used artificial flavor. HOBNOB is run by the same family as Yellowtail but operates in France

  • purplegrillz

    hang in there!

  • pacw808

Our supermarkets can't sell wine (yet?), but in the category my favorite cheap quaffable wine is the Saint M Riesling (by Chateau St. Michelle). A very good wine for 10-12 bones!

  • Gato Negro Cabernet (CHEAP AND DELICIOUS) I had to stop myself from buying this wine repeatedly because I wanna try new things.. But yeah. like $7 for 1.5 liters in my local shop.

  • Dawn9850

A really good “supermarket” wine (in Tennessee we can't buy wine in the supermarket) is the Four Vines Naked Chardonnay.

  • jsums

Great show. Love the concept. Not everyone is lucky enough to live in an easy-wine-access area. Go Rhone! It rarely fails. QOTD – Columbia Crest “Grand Estates” Merlot. Hands down the best generic, crowd-pleasing, inexpensive red wine that you can find EVERYWHERE. It's actually impressive the quality and consistency that they achieve at an industrial scale. That takes skill and hard work. Now, it's no Northstar or Petrus, but it's damn good wine for $10.

  • I like this supermakret wine concept series you have going here Gary.

QOTD: No supermarket sales here in TN, but as far as generic in every wine/liquor store its hard for me to pick one. I almost never buy the same bottle twice. Just too much to try out. I have had the first two wines though. Really enjoyed the Pouilly Fuisse, at least at the time. Hot july 4th by the pool, iced down some 🙂

  • payson07

Supermarkets are not allowed to sell alcoholic beverages in CO (for the most part- aside from Super Target and Costco), but we're drinking Menage Trois Meritage or Zin at the moment. Not life changing by any means, but not a bad mid week wine.

  • northwest_pk

QOTD: I'm really digging Domaine de Pajot Côtes de Gascogne 2008 coming in at around $8 at my local supermarket. I also really like 2008 Vitiano Umbria for a red, comes in at about $11. Good show Gary, gonna check out that Paralell 45 soon!

  • RobinC

I recently browsed the wine selection at the supermarket just to see what options were available there, and I found about 4 wines that I would buy. I just remember the Bogle/Cline selections.

  • Randall

    HA!!

  • Lurker Berserker

Interesting show concept Gary – nice kickoff. I was excited for you to try the Jadot as well as I also wouldn't normally buy it (likening it to a brand like B&G which I also wouldn't normally buy) but if your review of it was very positive, I might have checked it out. To that point, I think I will be checking out the Parallel 45 depending on what price its being sold at locally (I am a Rhone Ranger).

QOTD: I haven't had it in years (since I can't remember the last time I bought supermarket wine) but I remember Rancho Zabacho's Zinfandels showing very decent QPR (even their Dancing Bull label). Being a Gallo brand, I believe its pretty readily available here in the U.S. grocery market segment. Cheers!

  • Randall

That’s what I meant. (Two 12oz or 11.2oz beers worth are in a 750 of… hmm… Rodenbach Grand Cru, shall we say?)

  • Gary Allard

You nailed it…you nailed it…you nailed it. When I find people who are new to wine, and they don't understand what to buy or where to concentrate, Parallel 45 is the first wine I introduce them to. I call it my “Hamburger wine”.

  • passion4wine

Conundrum is one of the best supermarket wines at a reasonable cost. Hope they keep it up.. and for those oyster lovers out there.. Henri Bourgeois Sancerre is a good one to pick up

  • David M Roberts

Cool concept! Timing on this is apropos as I decided to budget last week and forced myself to select a few wines from my local supermarket – rolled with BV and Ravenswood, which are always safe bets for the price. Also find that Louis Martini is an easy choice, along with most anything by Clos du Bois.

  • Kensmith21

Black liquorisasldfasldjf. What was that GV? I am never going to forvive you for that. Just kidding you menace. On a serious note, I am drinking a King Family 2008 Virginia Meritage right now. This is a winner. I am not kidding.

  • FranzQueen90

Gary! I'm coming out of the shadows on this one since I am a college kid. Even though your comment section can sometimes be intimidating to us newcomers to the wine world I WILL GLADLY give Franzia (Sunset Blush) credit for getting me interested in wines.
I have now moved up to YellowTail even though people enjoy trashing it, I would definitely say it has been my gateway wine…and one day I'll be on the classy, expensive stuff in some of your vids lol

BTW i really appreciate how you try to stress the fact that the point of all this is that we enjoy what we are drinking and you don't make people like me feel like shit because I don't drink Robert Parker ranked 98 point wines lol

  • RickW

Gary, Great concept. Really enjoyed this session.

My supermarket wine is Edna Valley Chardonnay – which I think you can get everywhere now. Love that it's not an oak / butter bomb. Perfect for Wednesday night dinner. I love it paired with seafood. First time I had it was with Caesar salad and steamed Dungeness Crab. Knocked my socks off and I've been a fan ever since. Simple wine, one trick pony wine. But it's a solid trick. Cheers!

  • Rimarfish

QOTD: I tried almost all brands that populates major supermarkets. At the end, I always rely on: Red wine, Columbia Crest Grand Estates Merlot and White wines, Kim Crawford Sauvignon Blanc.
Great idea for this week Gary!

  • QOTD: I am currently into two wines: Chateau Ste. Michelle has a Riesling I enjoy. And I'm also enjoying the Graffigna Malbec that I was introduced to by a friend of mine.

  • Jsternh

Commodity wines – I like Mondavi, especially their fume blanc – great QPR / great summer wine, served chilled, great wine to quaff while you're waiting the beef to grill.

  • tempestjones

    CKC reporting in.
My two favorite bargain bin wines are the Bogle Petite Syrah, (which you actually reviewed on the show, great with veal hamburgers) and Root 1 Cabernet, a wonderful, dirty, mushroomy and most importantly, cheap wine.
    Much love Gary!

  • Moblueeyes2000

My favorite “reach for” supermarket red is Frontier Red by Fess Parker. YUMMO!

  • teckdeck2008

Love that your reviewing some of the cheaper and more accessible wines which I almost always have to choose from on my ckc budget. I've found a few good surprises buy asking for help and not acting pretentious when they recommend something. I love that story because I work at a winebar and it is so true that people do that lol.

QotD: For me it has to be the Llano Estacado Signature White. Mostly because I've toured the winery up in Lubbock and its cheap because its from within Texas. But also I think its very well made and the grapes and terrior work well together.

CKC QotD: We do have a couple of wine courses here at A&M. I'm not sure about University of Houston or University of Texas in Arlington though, where I'm about to attend grad school.

    Qotd:

  • Smahlatz

    Mont Tauch Fitou

  • Pazzzzzzzzz.

  • supercali

qod: crane lake or mcmannis. you can find it even in corner stores around here.

  • Lady L'egance

    QOTD: 2007 Bogle Riesling

  • PayneTrayne

QOTD: Chateau Greysac '04 from Medoc — $10 old world wine with massive bottle variation. Don't buy it from a stop and shop 🙂

  • YoungDave

QOTD: If I had to pick one that I bought recently because it was on sale for super cheap at my local supermarket, and on was on an oaked white kick, 2007/8 Acacia Cahrdonnay would probably be my bet.

  • pian0_player

I like Chateau Larose-Trintaudon its a cru bourgeois. Usually buy it for under $20 at Vons, its pretty consistent. Not the most amazing Bordeaux, but you get some of that personality for a much lower price tag. I have also had a couple good experiences with Symmetry Rodney Strong, although I think its overpriced. I have actually had the Jadot Pouilly Fuisse and either have enjoyed it or hated it depending on the vintage. I generally try to avoid buying wines at the supermarket as I feel you pay a higher premium for lower quality wines. If I go to one of my usual spots with 20 bucks in my pocket I can walk out with a pretty damn good bottle of wine. Not so much at Albertsons…

  • Love the supermarket wines…lets just admit it…we all drink them.

QOTD: I love the Bogle line, The Petite Sirah really makes me smile…just sayin!!

  • Roy Petitfils

Gary, my 5 year old son Max just said, “Daddy, you know what looks much more cooler? Duh blue one.”

  • Bluestreak40

I can’t comment about on campus schools but for distance learning VESTA really work for me in both enology and viticulture classes.
Beringers founders estate line isn’t half bad at all.

  • Tisalynn

QOTD: love to try new wines, but in a rush always grab Columbia Crest or Woodbridge.

I live in Mississippi, so the wine laws are pretty screwy. State doesn’t run retail, but does control all wholesale and warehousing. So the state does have absolute control over the selection. No direct sales, no shipping. Also, the state adds a straight 27% markup to everything, so there isn’t a real incentive for them to hunt for discounts.

But most of the basic wines I can find, and I do have a great retailer who will try to order anything he can. But that’s sort of hit and miss.
