QOTD: South Africa. Chile I think single varietal Carmenerer right now. Also had an excellent Viognier recently. I like the interesting, newer things they’re doing. Generally avoid Cabernet.

    @whinesblog

  • I’ve become a huge fan of Chilean blends of traditional Bordeaux grapes. It’s a great balance of the new world California monsters with the refinement and old world Bordeaux style. I had the opportunity to taste a number of Chilean Blends at the Wines of Chile blogger tasting (I blogged about the experience at http://thegrandcrew.org – you had Kenny from The Grand Crew on your show some time ago) I also love the Syrah/Cab blends, like the ’08 Hacienda Araucano Clos de Lolol which was fantastic.

  • Gary,

I’m a new follower and love the show! It’s great to see Mott and others, and I find it very interesting to hear your descriptions of these wines. I’m pretty new to wine, so any knowledge I can skim is great. Also, I love some of the pairings you’ve done in the past. I went back and watched your cereal, hot dog and chocolate bar and licorice pairings. As a college student, those pairings are perfect!

Just wondering, would you ever consider doing a tasting featuring the Lodi, CA wine region? There are some pretty good ones there, especially in the way of Zinfandel. Turner Road Vintners, Jeremy Wine Co, d’Art, m2, Woodbridge, Macchia, etc. Thanks!

  • John__J

Uruguay is doing some great things. I’ve had some really good Tannat’s (including a delicious tannat sweet wine with a nose screaming of chocolate) and a Marselan (that cross between cab sauv and grenache) that were all great for their price.

    *Lurker Alert*
I really like this show! I’m 21 and really trying to learn about the wine world, I think its cool to see someone like Gary that has a fresh, less pompous approach to the industry.
I have a new pallate, but I like the idea of trying new types of wine to learn and grow.

I really can’t get into Argentinian wine.. I seem to be the only person who doesn’t love malbec. I much prefer Chilean wines.. especially the pinot noir and syrahs (although I think carmenere is overrated).

Can you do a show on NZ and Chile syrah soon? I think they’re both making really serious syrah that is the best of the new world. Maybe two of each… Craggy Range & Schubert vs Matetic & Leyda?

    QOTD: World Cup 2014

  • Are we still on schedule to hit 1000th (999th) show on the anniversary?

QOTD: Argentina — but not for their wines. I tend to agree that SA wines are over rated by score but are still values in general by price. I rarely drink them as they seem as others have posted either fruit bombs or wood chippers. I will keep trying them though. I would not spend 60 bucks on a SA wine at this point. SA wines should be in the 15-20 mark (a comment my brother recently made in reference to Italian wines — but he is freaking insane!!)

Note to viewers: Due to a recent dip in ratings, Wine Library TV has been cancelled. The network will be airing reruns until March 16th when the show’s replacement- Swine Library TV with host Rory Mingersheut debuts. Rory will “bring the thunder” as he samples the world’s finest pork products! Join us March 16th for what promises to be a much, much better show!!

  • Hey Gary love the show, currently studying for my Master of Sommelier Certificate and finding your videos really interesting and useful, especially like the blind tastings. I’m sure you’ll never get round to this but would be cool to see an episode on blind tastings New World vs old World. Maybe do something like best wines up to $30 and do two Old World Chardonnay’s vs two new world and then two old world cabernets vs 2 new world. Something like that, would be interesting to hear your thoughts on the big differences between four strong, good value wines from each world and how they compare and differ. And which you think is best. Anyway, keep it up, cool show.

I actually didn’t want use wikipedia as a reference point…. that said they’ve become pretty good at cleaning up the site, so I don’t think it is AS bad as your comment might suggest.
I don’t think ANYTHING in my comment indicated that I view wikipedia as the gospel truth. The problem is that people who are not familiar with the liqueur which Gary is referring to (and are not ‘hip’ to the wine lingo) might be inclined to believe that ‘cassis’ refers to blackcurrant, and that ‘crรชme de cassis’ is the term for the liqueur itself. As far as I know Gary has NEVER cleared this up himself (or said what he is actually refering to), but I suppose it’s been discussed a boatload of times in the comments…..thanks for calling me out on the wikipedia thing. There was no need, though.
If you want a more sound reference how about this?

    http://oxforddictionaries.com/search?searchType=dictionary&isWritersAndEditors=true&searchUri=All&q=cassis&_searchBtn=Search&contentVersion=WORLD

It suggest that Gary has even more explaning to do…you can’t expect everybody to suddenly just know what he is refering to; after all the breaking down of snobbiness in the wine culture is one of Gary main goals.

Good episode. Have been learning to appreciate the Malbec’s from Argentina. One of the first wines that started my appreciation of red wines was a Carmenere from Chile.

Nice show but I’m not tempted to try this wines.
I don’t like bombastic wines. Years ago I loved these wines but now not any more.

QOTD. …… not my favorite holliday destination because of no descent food.

Good show and I always try to purchase wine that is (IMO) worth it’s price. Any wine over $20 should be very good!

QOTD: Many pretty wines and not many great wines.

  • Anonymous

QOTD: Value, Value, Value. Is there excitement tho? Some, but few and far between. This will change though as I see more and more big wines with seriouse potential coming out. Matetic EQ from Chile, Domus Aurea etc.
    Nice show Gary.
I would love to see you do a show on rarer, more esoteric fortified wines. A show including Pineau de Charantes would be pretty good.

  • QOTD: Nuit d’Ivresse by C&P Breton in the Loire, we just ordered another case, maybe our 2011 wine, too! Also, 2008 Willamette Valley Pinot Noir bottling from McKinlay Vineyards, one of the best regardless of price (++QTP). We always have a box of sparkling handy, Nicole Chanrion “Effervescence” seemed to be the one for 2010, from Beaujolais (KLWM).

  • I live here (Chile deep darkest South America married to winemaker and the trick to Chile is the sweet spot between about 19 and 35. Why everyone insists upon only trying the icon of the big old corporate / trophy wineries I will never understand. Seek them out try some MOVI wines and there you will be surprised. Today’s mosaic of Chilean wine is slowly being better represented in the US but there is more to do to get it up there. Patience folks.
