have been drinking it for along time, but am looking for the ultimate, hard to find

  • Randall

No. In the 1920’s-30’s, Ford set up a HUGE Utopian-type town in the middle of the Amazon for the purpose of bringing rubber back to the States to use for car tires. The ruins of this place, like houses, hospitals, warehouses, schools, etc are still being swallowed up by the jungle. I just remembered a great article from NPR…

“Fry”-day, castello? A little slip of the subconscious, perhaps?

    😉

All Natural, everything is done naturally, No pesticides and I think chemical fertilizers.

  • QOTD: South America = All of my friends overrate their wines because they can find a Malbec at most restaurants and love BIG red wines.

Qotd: I think argentinan malbec…and crazy times with friends lol. I’m a ckc and the last trip out the country i took was with the singing cadets at a&m and it was to argentina, uruguay, and brazil. Its what got me interested in wine although i tend to prefer the stinky stuff more now and i have a lot of good memories of drinking wine with friends there.

    But are they musky???

OK. I’m gonna cave here, audiofan. In your own, slightly condescending way… That was funny! I know… it’s late…

Hey Vaniacs, it’s now Saturday the 29th. We’re 24 shows from #1000 and 24 days from the 5th anniversary of WLTV. Do you think Gary can pull it off?

  • DaveAll

    good show. thanks.
    QotD: large snakes.

Good to see the value malbec do well.
    QOTD: rainforest

  • Chaos

QOTD: A place I need to have an extended vacation.

nice episode, sounds good.. all these years of drinking wine and not sure I could put my finger on what cassis tastes like. I had a Jumilla once with an amazing flavor profile and thought it was just a mouthful of cassis. how can i get a taste of what cassis really is?

  • Anonymous

Doubtful…has there ever been a time that Gary sustained a pace of an episode per day including weekends for a month? Would take a serious effort…

  • Mauricio Rauld

I’m fron Chile and the Chilean’s and Argentine’s are already pretty competitive with each other, so this just adds fuel to the fire.

  • cassis is a french word for blackcurrant.Just buy some of that berry and mash it an drink, then you get pure cassis

  • so this is the time to Crush it then? Perfect to start today with the hinted weekend show

  • John__J

So if we do get a Saturday episode, is that going to be WAY laid back, like on a Hammock?

  • Anonymous

Don’t let Gary hear you say that!!! Did you not watch episode 148!!

QOTD- I had a pretty good Cab Franc from Uruguay in an LA restaurant. Made me want to go there and make wine.

    Hey GV:
Love the show, passion, Mott and Bourbon show. I’d swear, on the Ben Marco, you reviewed the wine and you forgot to taste it. Ep #976. Am I wrong?

jsut checked BC, Canada agent on the Lota 2007 is 67$ and for me I would give that money because Silver Oak is over 100$ here Ch Montlena around the same

qotd : Grass Fed Beef and Malbec?

  • John__J

Good question. But if he can’t, at least that’s 2 separate momentous WLTV events, as opposed to just 1 big one. And they’d still be big ones anyway

I have had a lot of casino macul that I really liked but over the last 5 years or so I have found them getting on board with the over the top Cali style, less and les things like bel l peppers and roasted poblanos on the nose, more and more big fruit.
Michele Roland fucked up another great winery in the name of fruit.

  • hehe, even Gary can be wrong? Cassis is the french word for blackcurrant and Creme de Cassis is made of … not red currant 🙂

  • ALLAN

I have always been here before

23 days to go, 24 shows to do. Hello Gary.

    :OP

  • I always have 2 or 3 Lurton Pinot Gris handy, specially in the summer.

  • I don’t live in the US, but point me to the US based retailer with the most comprehensive argentine wines list, and I’ll see if I can point out the under 20 dollar gems.

  • SA = a strange lesson in economics.
Why can i buy Chilean wine cheaper in the States than the grocery stores in Chile? No external competition in Chile? Come to think of it, i haven’t seen other countries wines in Argentina either … hmmm.

  • AND, I just saw WineLibrary has it for $8!

  • Ok, looks like most of my favorite malbecs are missing from the WineLibrary selection, but here are a few they do have which are serviceable and well priced and which should rarely disappoint:

    – Finca La Linda Malbec ($7) This is Luigi Bosca’s most affordable line. Not the most complex of wines, but it will take care of your beef and your wallet. A tuesday night at home wine.

    – Altos Las Hormigas Malbec ($9). The best under 10 dollar Malbec in WineLibrary. You can’t really go wrong with this one.

    – Luigi Bosca Reserva Malbec ($15) In a restaurant, I would order this one over the previous 2… it brings more complexity at a still decent price point. Elegant.

    – Catena Malbec ($17) – Im not crazy about this one (I prefer the Luigi Bosca) but there is not much that is fake about this wine.

Also, you would normally want to stay away from Argentine whites, which are mediocre, BUT:

    – Lurton Pinot Gris ($8) is a nice aromatic white, great for sipping on the porch, or with seafood.

    – Susana Balbo CriosTorrontes ($12) brings something new, if you’ve already had other Torronteses.

Lots of energy in the show today. You kept my attention because I was waiting for the next interesting comment. When I think of South America it reminds me of big, good value red wines.

Lurk no more, Vaniac; lurk no more!
I like this show, as ever.

Okay, I’m back after a long time.

South America to me, is a good value wine, but it is either a fruit bomb or an oak monster, it is very rarely a well-balanced complex wine.
I’d try the Pinot Noir, had WineLib shipped to Israel, but I’m quite sure I had some of these before; usually, they are VERY tasty, but they last in the glass for 20 minutes and then they are gone: no taste, no nose.

Ah but I was so much older then, I’m younger than that now.

How great to see you in such a good mood, Gary! All guns blazing, and fired up….maybe this is a sign that 23 shows in 23 days can be done. I hope you have go at it. They don’t have to be 20 minute shows, remember….?

    …..in!

    Is it rolling bob? 🙂
