great info on Shiraz! interesting wines for sure, still good value in australia about 10 years later. Great wines coming out of Margaret River, Coonawarra, etc…. love australian wines, as long as they have enough acidity to preserve the freshness and keep the oak in check.

Good stuff. This ranking the wines 1-5 will go away at some point as I watch these episodes (because I know that it is not happening now in ’07 as I watch this) but I like the ranking. It reminds me of being in 4-H and having the judge place the pigs or the cows in order. Yeah, I grew up in Iowa and we drank wine every day. OK. Not really. I didn’t start drinking wine until WAY after the 4-H days. Does anybody read this? I’m embarrassed.

I think shiraz is one of my favorite types of wine. I’m glad that you included the Yellow Tail brand since it’s the one that you see just about everywhere. I liked getting your take on how it stacks up against other labels. I’ve never been much of a fan of Yellow Tail since I view it as being a macrowinery. Kind of the Budweiser of wines. Ok, it’s not as bad as Budweiser, but you know what I mean. ;oP

I LOVE SHIRAZ! It’s the main type of wine that I drink. I do hate the fact it makes my tongue go black though. That sucks. And my teeth.

  • Since shiraz is one of my favorite varietals, this episode was a hit! I used to carry 2UP in my store and really enjoyed it, so I’m glad you gave it more than two thumbs up!

On a side note, did you know that 2 Up is a very popular game played in Australia? It’s played with two coins which are thrown. Bets are taken as to whether they’ll shop up as heads or tails. Apparently the game can get pretty rowdy!

When meeting with fellow friends and employees for our “Wine Nights” the Australian shiraz is always one of the most popular wines.

I’m reviewing older WLTV videos and have noticed that most of the Shiraz featured are labels I don’t recognize from the Seattle, WA area. I wonder if the wineries featured are predominantly found on the East Coast or if the approx. 2-years which have elapsed have seen some of the wineries change names or disappear?

It’s interesting to see Gary praising the low end Fakey Fake Shiraz’s. Don’t get me wrong – I Love Fake fruit bombs – but this episode shows a different side of Gary!

First appearance of the Jets! That didn’t take long. I’m a 49ers fan myself.

What’s the difference between shiraz and syrah?

I like the “rank ’em up” aspect; gives a little suspense to the show.

“there are no great wines, just great bottles.” How true. Sot of like Yvon Chouinard, president of Patagonia clothing saying “there is no such thing as bad weather, just bad clothing.”

Love the show, Gary! Keep it up and get fa’shnikin!

I’ve had the 2004 Two Up a couple times and I agree, it’s great stuff!

I like the ranking! Sometimes on the newer shows you don’t do that anymore.

Great show. It’s cool to see the format develop over time. Especially knowing what it is now.

The Yellow Tail Shiraz was the first wine that I really liked when I started to drink wine. I’m pretty sure it was the 2002 vintage. That became my comfort brand wine for years.

One of my friends recently gave me a Yellow Tail Shiraz. GROSS! I couldn’t stand this wine. It tasted like crap.

So at SXSW when you implored us to stop drinking Yellow Tail, I couldn’t have agreed more.

    Gary,
Grenache and Shiraz are probably two of my favorite grapes. Love the pepper and spice of an Australian Shiraz although I noticed you didn’t mention any of the wines having that aroma on the nose. Keep up the great work.

    Gary,

I was introduced to your website last evening and watched my first episode this afternoon. The gentleman who introduced me encouraged starting from the beginning, but I must admit, the first episode I watched was #148. Your work is refreshing, sincere, and entertaining!! My only complaint is that I wasn’t introduced sooner.

In this particular episode, you make the following statement; “as someone said; there’s only great bottle’s, there’s not great wines”. – I can make my own assumptions, but was wondering if you could please expand on this statement?
