I had a bottle Sequel Syrah from Long Shadows Wineries at dinner last night. Delicious, but almost over-powered the food.

  • Burton

I went to the near by wine shop to pick up a bottle of Giesen when I noticed you were going to taste. I paid $12 and thought more of it than you. Agreed very aromatic and this wine always has that herbal quality to it. 7th or 8th vintage of this wine for me.

My favorite under $10 Sauv Blanc is the ’05 Nobilo. For around $15, try the Kim Crawford SB from NZ, and the Nobilo Icon also from NZ. For a little more $, Mulderbosch from South Africa typically makes yummy SB.

Currently drinking a 2003 Two Hands Brave Faces Shiraz/Grenache as I type this. Last night was an ’02 Neyers Hudson Syrah.

    MGB:

You like hearty, ageable reds – but drink them young. Do you ever let these type of wines age a little bit so as to drink closer to their peak?

i’m not a crackhead yet but i have been trying my best to get others addicted with me.
i drink about 4-5 bottles a week, mostly on my own, a glass or two here and there for hubby (if he’s nice to me).
earlier i finished up a nederburg (south african west cape) 2003 shiraz. nice wine. but the one i opened while the last couple of episodes were playing is really lovely: 2000 bodegas montecillo reserva rioja made with traditional tempranillo grapes. gorgeous stuff. i’ve fallen totally in love with spanish reds! the shiraz was about $13 and the rioja just under $20 (canadian). Even though I can never find any overlap between what’s for sale here and what’s available at wine library i checked anyway and found bodegas montecillo but it doesn’t look like the reserve (it’s a little small a label to read but looks like a crianza which if my education is working means it’s less aged than the reserva which is less aged than the gran reserva). definitely there is a massive price difference. i’m really really certain i can’t walk into the liquor control board of ontario and purchase any wine for under $6!!! but then it sounds like i may not want to anyway. 🙂

Always enjoyed the show. Keep it up. As i was drinking a 2005 Lake Sonoma S. Blanc I was stuck by the mellons I was tasting/ and very little grapefruit. Very interesting. I visited The winery several years ago and thought tasting something other than their Zin would be intersesting. But it made me think, I wondered if others would enjoy this different taste. It gave me an idea that I’m not sure is a great idea, but I thought I would share it with you.

Why not do a tasting of something that is widely available, that the viewers can taste and rate ahead of time and share their comments that would be posted ahead of a tasting that you would do. I would find it very interesting to see what everyone else thought of the wine and than to see you rating after we tasted the wine ahead of time. It would be great to compared my comments to others, and than to yours. What do you think

Loved the commercial (very Goodfellas). Wine I had last night was 2002 Di Majo Norante Aglianico. I pretty much opened it at the table and while it was not bad, it needed some decanting or time in the bottle. Had a nice mineral, raisin backbone, but needs a few more years in the bottle.

Having just returned from Napa, the last bottle was the best one of the trip: 1979 Joseph Phelps Insignia (magnum format.)

Love the show (especially the episode on my friend, Bob Egelhoff.)

    Keep up the great work.

    Regards from Florida,

Ray N: Congratulations! Nice bottle of wine to open for that occasion — very young though. How was it?

QOD: Just finished a bottle of Pessagno Idyll Times Zinfandel today. I bought it at WL after watching Gary taste on WLTV. I opened it on Sunday and had some every day, using VacuVin in between and refrigerating. It was delicious every single day — definitely “plummy” and therefore “yummy” (ok, I know that’s corny, but we are talking WLTV here).

LOVED the commercial, and was also very curious about the decanter. Do tell.

What about the Kenwood SB? It’s my old standby
in the grassy, herbal style. Here in CA ~$8.
or the Sauvignon Republic wines ~@$15, upcoming wines & from another country every year.

Drinking the DeLoach Pinot Noir 2000 tonight

Love this reality wine tasting…. john

GeneV – Have you tried any Keller pinot noir? One night I opened a bottle of that with a feta burger I got from a Greek takeout place down the street from me. The combo was unbelievable. My local wine store stopped carrying it because the owner doesn’t like pinots from Sonoma…

    Tonights wine was:

Andrew Peace Masterpeace Shiraz 2003 (from you).

What ever happened to Omaka Springs Sauv Blanc. We still have two bottles from last year. Really liked this one!

Laguna Beach is on! Stop answering emails. I think a glass of Laguna Canyon Zin/Syrah pairs best with this MTV reality soap. 😉

    GV –

Last wine that I had was at Ruth’s Chris tonight. I was a pinot noir from Carneros, but nothing worth remembering by name… though it did have a price that initially made me think that it would be worth remembering. Oh well.

Okay. Now I have a question for you. I know… I know… you like asking the questions, not answering them. But, I think that I’ve spent enough at the WL over the past few years years that I think I deserve to ask you a question every now and then. So, my question is, what wine(s) did you serve at your wedding? At my wedding, (which was in 2000), my wife and I were just getting into wine and chose the 1997 Blackstone Napa Merlot. Of course, if we were getting married today, we would pick something completly different becuase out palets have expanded exponentially, but that was then… and it proved to be a good choice at the time.

Well no more questions since they are ignored.

Answer to QoD: Navarro Correas Malbec 2004, Mendoza, Argentina, nice with a steak.

A shame about the Sauvignon Blanc. Maybe you’d have had better luck with a Cheninathon instead: Napa v. Vouvray v. Steen!

Last wine: ’03 Huards Le Pressoir (right now, in fact). Not bad, not bad at all.

  • JohnM

Great episode, especially the commercial! You certainly “tasted the bad wines so we don’t have to” today. QOTD – Just finished a glass of Coturri 2001 Lost Creek Vineyard Yorkville Highlands Pinot. Very nice, very Coturri. 15% ABV but not hot, earthy nose, smooth, full midpalate of a plum-currant mixture, and a medium finish. Its drinking very well right now with an hour decant. What’s the prize for first

Love these episodes, great fun! Obvious bottom line was “Stick to Sancerre!”

Last bottle consumed was the 2003 Carlisle Bennett Valley Syrah – mailing list wine, but an amazing value and a fantastic wine.

Hi Gary, answer to your ? of the day and three questions for you.

? of the day: 2003 Stags Leap Chardonnay

    3 questions for you:
    1) Are you going to do another restaurant wine show – since the last one had 4 didn’t show well at all, I am curious about your recommendations of some other wines we commonly see on wine lists.
    2) Have you ever thought about adding some food favorite food pairings in your shows.
    3) You mention wine bars – any you can highly recommend or restaurants where you were particularly impressed by the selection.

Ok, that’s enough from me (this is my 1st post, so I had a few saved). Great show and keep up the good work!
