  • WOW just amazing 74 comments and I make 75 right now, at 1:45 AM 😉 I’m here guys, I’m telling you I sit here at night just to catch up since WLTV has added hrs to my already ridiculous schedule. PS I was at Jewel Bako in NYC tonite, amamzing SUSHI!

Last wine – Qupe 2004 Syrah from CA Central Coast. Had a nice dark fruit scent but overly mineral in taste and went flat/bland in finish $14.

I also want to know what is up with the red wine you had decanted on table?

New to watching your podcast – what is the story with changing picture on the wall?

  • OK, I broke into the 2003 Stephan Ridge cab you reviewed way back in ep #9. Huge huge wine, massive tannins. Wish I had rewatched the episode before I opened it or else I would have waited sveral more years. However, it was big big big and extremely delicous. Another hit by Gary V.

Actually, it reminded me more of a petite sirah than a cab with those huge mouth-filling tannins.

So, I got a question for you (not that you have any chance of answering it): Petite sirahs are typically big wines with huge huge tannins. That would lead you to think that they might age quite well and be stunning 10-15 years down the line. But I never hear anyone say, “I just popped a bottle of 94 Foppiano PS, and it was incredible!” So, does PS age well or not? Does the fruit disappear by the time the tannins mellow? I have lots of bottles of PS, and I’m wondering, in general – how long will they last?

P.S. I’m glad you’re up this late. That tells me that you must be burning the midnight oil working on that heat episode.

What’s that? You want me to cut you some “slack”? What’s “slack”? Never heard that term before. What? I’m “busting your chops”? Don’t know what that means either. Now get back to work! 😉

The last wine I drank is still that “Sexy” Riesling my wife bought. I’ve had a cold the last few days so I’m trying to rest up for my big trip to Napa this weekend…

    Gary,

When I was in the store yesterday I noticed you had a nice selection of Sake.

When can we expect a Sake review and education?

Last bottle: 2001 Carmody McKnight Cadenza 46% Cabernet Savignon, 42% Merlot, 12% Cabernet Franc. Estate grown. West Paso Robles. About $25.00. Very good wine from a very small producer. I may come up there and challenge you to a game of HORSE. I made the all-state basketball team 3 times. Unfortunately the years were 1954,1955 & 1957. Now I drink wine.

  • Gary, great episode. I’m way late this time.
Again we need some help on the picture. What is it. I have an idea but not for sure.
As for Sauvignon Blancs with an “M” name…what about Matua Paretai Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc? It is a VERY nice Sauvi Blanc.
Last wine I tasted…Juan Gil ’04…a little hotter than the ’03 but still a great wine for the price (purchased from you guys of course!).
Again please help me and my buddies with the picture and forgive me for being so late on the comments!
Great ending…but what was in the decanter?

Gary I am a red guy but recently started getting a bit into whites after a trip this summer to Tuscany. With the 95f heat here in Fl almost every day at this time of the year, I found them to be a refreshing change. I just picked up a trio of New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc’s to try. They were: 2005 Allan Scott Sauvignon Blanc Marlborough, 2005 Huia Sauvignon Blanc Marlborough and 2005 Matua Sauvignon Blanc Paretai Marlborough. While I found them all nice the 2005 Matua Sauvignon Blanc Paretai Marlborough was hands down the wifes and I favorite.

gary, gary, gary…..ok-what was in the decanter??

this episode just supports the notion of how hard it is to find good, cheap wine…

as far as the “pampers” bouquet you noted….i hope you have kids…..otherwise i may be a bit concerned….and if you do have kids why dont you mention them for your viewers…

    to answer your question…
Westerly Vineyards Merlot 2002 Santa Ynez Valley…great merlot for the price, a pretty big wine with good fruit, dry, not over-oaked, and should have 5 more years of life ahead-not bad for $18!!

Great episode. I’m “crack addicted” to your vlog. Can’t believe you tasted four sauv blancs and didn’t work “cat piss” into the conversation. Very un-Vaynerchuck-like to fail to say “cat piss” when the opportunity is there. Would love to know which Sanceres you like. For domestic suav blanc, although at a significantly higher price point, I like Ojai (sourced from Westerly vineyard) and Fiddlehead Goosebury (Ms. Joseph originally called it “Gooseberry” but the BATF pinheads put the cabash on that name under the theory that it could lead the public to falsely assume it is made from gooseberry-unfrigginbelievable!) With that segue, why not devote a video segment to some of the more assinine things the BATF has ruled upon wine-wise in your experience?
Anyhow, last wine tasted; 2004 Fiddlehead “Pink Fiddle” that came with my Fiddlehead wine club shipment last summer. Surprised to find it still drinking well a year later. Made from pinot saignee juice.

I’m just trying to help you get to 100 comments.

Thanks for reading my question and showing the commercial again. I knew this board would enjoy it. It really boils down to this simple formula: spit take = comedy gold.

Last night I opened an ’03 Girard Petite Syrah that you tasted on WLTV. Huge, complex wine full of cherry and coffee. Great recommendation.

  • damon

just trying to get to 100. I’ve had more wine since my last post. A Chilean blend called Nomad. Cab, Syrah, and Carmenere. Quite nice for around $13.

    Hey Gary!

Great commercial, Sancerre with spicy tuna..one of my favs! Possible to do Syrahs from around the world comparing terrior or just France amazing examples of terrior influence. QOTD…Last night Priorat Trio Infernal 1/3, thought it was better than most Palacio’s at half the price.

    Cheers!

Gary, I am a big, big fan of WLTV. Been watching since about number 35. Keep it up. I don̢??t think it is inappropriate for you to tout WL̢??s inventory. First I believe you are astute buyers, second Рyour viewers should be able to judge a degree of puffery in light of a general honesty you hold with, third Рwhen we get burned we stop ordering.

    About heat-
I ordered a case from WL (mostly whites) on July 5, I live in Dallas. Because of my previous experience knowing that you use high quality molded expanded PS inner packing I took a chance and used ground shipping. The package arrived 3 days later, it arrived late afternoon. After having spent all day on the FEDEX truck I measured the temperature with an infrared thermometer, upon opening Р90 degrees F (probably the max for the package). The wines I̢??ve tasted so far don̢??t seem t be any the worse. By comparison I ordered a case from a west coast competitor. I selected 2 day service for that case. It was 80 degrees when it arrived at a similarly late afternoon delivery. I think that the majority of the temperature increase comes on the last day when the package is out for local delivery.
    Just a little clinical observation.

    Interesting show.

    One idea:
It would be nice if a map with a mark for the wines origin is displayed during the introduction.

    Something like this: http://img163.imageshack.us/img163/5672/140pxbordeauxdot2pb7.png

    Google map might work too.

It also would be nice if an episode would last a bit longer! 🙂

Gary – What is your favorite corkscrew? What do you use to open really old bottles of wine?

  • Shout out to Shawn M. Had the 2002 Navarro Correas Malbec last night. That is my house wine for red meat dinners. Always good bottles but not always easy to find. Gary, you must stay up till three AM to read all of these comments. Fast approaching 100 on this one alone. I too was disappointed in the Sauvingon Blanc showing as there are so many great ones from NZ.

Last bottle: 1998 Nicolas Potel Volnay 1er Cru Santenots. It was decent, but not quite what I wanted. I think I just like the fruit forward Cali pinots more in general. Oh well, I guess I’m just not a Burgundy snob. (Of course, I haven’t ever tried the Richbourg you mentioned, or La Tache, or etc…) Jim

seeing if we can get to 100… last nights wines were: 2003 Ridge Pagani Ranch (way too young and not showing well IMO) and a 1992 Alban Reva Syrah (past it’s prime… though after 30+ min the funk finally blew off).

How about an vlog for Italian whites under $10 or maybe a episode for rose?

On your next trip, can you do a remote location episode on some of the vineyards that you will go to? So we can see some of the vineyards up close without having to leave our offices.
