EP 77 Vintages how much do they matter, a 2001 vs 2002 tasting

2001 Artazu Navarra Santa Cruz

Today Gary Vaynerchuk tackles the issue of how much a vintage effects the wine. Gary samples 2 wonderful wines from Spain that are exactly the same but are from 2 different years. Gary also asks you to help him with something cool!

I’m a little late for the sign off but, I agree with the idea behind this episode, vintage is everything, not that the grade given to a vintage means everything but there IS tremendous variation in the same wine from one vintage ot another in my experience

  • First of all, who cares when you post. I strive to never be the first post nerd.

Secondly: Gary, you said the “Six viewers of WLTV out there…”, dude, c’mon, you know there’s more. Give yourself some credit. I don’t post everyday, so that’s a sign.

The vintage thing is perfect, cause (and I don’t need to explain to all you wine folks watching this) it makes a difference. But it’s always nice to see you compare 2 different vintages of the same wine. It’s almost as fun as blind tasting.

So, first off, your show in my scale of 1-3 gets a good old fashioned 8. Way to do two wines from the same vintage…even if it’s a Spanish Grenache. I’ll try and check those out (I’ll buy them from you if I can’t find them locally…and I have a huge amount of wine right behind me at work!!)

And for your question of the day about the sign off, it should just simply be: “This is Gary Vanyerchuck, I’m gonna kick your ass with throwing in your face the REAL facts about wine!!”

I’ll understand if you don’t use that. And by the way…The Bears are still gonna romp on your Jets. And the Giants for that matter.

    See you later,
    Tony

  • Can I go ahead and metion that I’m the first to leave a REAL comment instead of those nerds that are so concerned with being “first”.

People, c’mon….watch the show…no one really cares if your first or not…not even Gary.

Relax….watch the show…so what about what time you say “I’M FIRST!!!!”…what are you, like 10 years old or something?

    Go Bears.

Can’t believe I was first to post! Happened totally by accident, and only becuase your vlog was posted much later than usual today.

Episode was very good — I had been hoping for “vertical tastings”. I love Grenache, and wasn’t aware Spain had Grenache. I will keep an eye out for it.

QOD – ending Tag Line. I like the “drunk” line. Anything I would come up with would be hopelessly corny — but I am looking forward to what some of the imaginative people on this board come up.

Hi and thank you for the little vertical tasting. I think (as you know) that this is both a fun thing to do and a great stimulous for us to do the same thing. I agree completely about buying a bottle before buying a case and learned the hard way… well I brought 11 bottles back (sorry, and thank you for being so accomodating).

    Your signature – how about:

“THis is Gary V, bringing forward the boundaries of good tastes”

    or

“… and remember, it’s only good wine if you like it when you put it in your mouth”

    great job as usual

Tony, only reason a “real comment” from me wasn’t earlier was because my internet connection slowed down to a crawl, so I couldn’t catch the last couple minutes of today’s episode until almost an hour later. Not nice to call someone you don’t know a “nerd” just because you didn’t happen on the website just in time seeing no comments posted. I figured it was worth a shot to throw in two words. And by the way, the words were not “first”.

Great episode once again. How about signing off with: “Come visit us again at Wine Library TV, where your thirst for wine knowledge.. is quenched.”

perfect, now i am justified in my dark chocolate indulgences: gary told me to!
the sign of a true artist is about what you said, one who is never totally pleased with the final project once it’s put to bed. it keeps the juices and ideas flowing. that was definitely a 94-95 point episode.
and last, i think you almost had it right with the first tag….how about “stomping the grapes so you don’t have to” a little more metaphorical, but still alluding to the sometimes bad wines that may need stomping as well as alluding to the learning stuff we crave.

Gary great episode today, very important topic. I’m glad that your constantly pushing yourself, but give yourself some credit for what your doing. WLTV wouldn’t have such a cult following (and growing) if you weren’t entertaining and educating us in this crazy world of wine. Hey how about that as a tag line, “Until next time this is Gary Vaynerchuk entertaining and educating you in this crazy world of wine”. My wife suggest a more “Seacrest-esq” line like “Vaynerchuk . . .out!” or maybe more like “Vaynerchuk uncorked”.

Anyway keep up the great work.

Aaahhh, finally trolls on the comment blog. As a one time sign off: “That’s grapes aren’t plain, mother******s” A regular one could be: “Come back and hear what I think, but always go with tastes good to you”

    Gary – fun episode.

For a closing I think something that is a combo of a toast and blessing would be smooth and timeless. Lifting the glass . . .

“This is Gary Vaynerchuk – Fine wines. Fabulous friends. Long life.”

I’d also consider dropping saying your name at the beginning if you are going to emphasize it at the end. It is printed on the screen so there isn’t much mystery about who you are. â??Hello and welcome to another (superlative of the day) episode of Wine Library TVâ?

    Keep up the great work!

Funny you should choose this for a subject, after the last episode I was inspired to pop an ’02 Hecula I had lying around, and now I’m wondering what all the fuss was about …

    Gary,

Great episode, as usual. How about:

“This is Gary Vaynerchuk, uncorking the truth about wine”.

Or if you’re looking for something a little more “Jets pregame”:

“This is Gary Vaynerchuk, uncorking a bottle of whoopass on the world of wine”.

    Or maybe “Jets postgame”:

“This is Gary Vaynerchuk, and I’m hammered right now”.

    Your choice.

    Gary,
I watched a few episodes with my five years old son. He calls you a â??wine guyâ?.
    So here is my suggestion:
You can end the show with something stupid but catchy like this: â??and now goodbye from the wine guy!â?

Btw, you never answer my email about the Riesling!
