EP 77 Vintages how much do they matter, a 2001 vs 2002 tasting

2001 Artazu Navarra Santa Cruz

Today Gary Vaynerchuk tackles the issue of how much a vintage effects the wine. Gary samples 2 wonderful wines from Spain that are exactly the same but are from 2 different years. Gary also asks you to help him with something cool!

I’m a little late for the sign off but, I agree with the idea behind this episode, vintage is everything, not that the grade given to a vintage means everything but there IS tremendous variation in the same wine from one vintage ot another in my experience

    Gary –

Can you please spend a little time discussing why some vintages of wine age better than other vintages?

As for you sign off slogan, here a few choices:

Drinking our way around the world one glass at a time (right from New Jersey).

Because great wine deserves shameless promotion.

If you didn’t buy it at Wine Library. you probably got it somewhere else.

Like Snakes on a Plane, it will make you wish that you drank more. Wine Library TV.

Getting folks laid one glass at a time. Wine Library TV.

Reminding you to lay down and keep cool. Wine Library TV.

And remember if your a wine snob or a cork dork if you don’t try it (or buy it) you can’t taste it.

    Gary,

I smiled while watching your reaction to the 2002 and recalling your comments earlier about “’97 heralded as the greatest vintage … ’98, nobody wanted it”. I loved many Napa Cabs from 1998 (Clark Claudon, Lewelling, Dalla Valle, Viader, Montelena). Sometimes these “off” vintages offer you the opportunity to drink quality Estates much younger. As an example, the ’98 Lewelling drank well upon release and still drinkings well today. It may not have the structure as ’97 or ’01, but is still good.

My point â?¦ critics talk about vintages in terms of good and bad. I do not always agree. Three are certainly â??offâ? vintages. But with the better wineries, it is more a matter of a difference in style and approachability â?¦ not necessarily good vs. bad.

    Do you agree?

Interesting Gary, I’ve also found great variations in vintages but never have been able to taste 2 at once. How about “it’s time to put a cork in another episode of wltv”.

“tackling one bottle at a time”
“spitting, so you don’t have to swallow”
    “J E T S, JETS JETS JETS!”
“I’m Gary Vaynerchuck the other wine geek”
In all honesty I think you should stay true to form or go with the “Drinking bad wine so you don’t have to.”
    Keep the good work,
    ED
P.S. Could you do an episode on Northern Rhone or Loire Valley ?

    Gary-
    Another fantastic episode:)
I am always surpised at the methods you use to install knowledge in all of us:)
I think the New Wine Library TV sign off phrase should be:

STUFF SOME FUN INTO YOUR WINE:)

this episode: 93…graceful, calm, but powerful…nice.
QOTD:”this is gary vaynerchuk, and that’s how it tastes”
    or
    “another day, another vintage”
    or
“this is gary vaynerchuk reminding you–bad taste is better than no taste”

Gary, another great episode-didn’t read all the comments so I hope I’m first with your new sign-off. This is Gary Vaynerchuk-“spitting so you don’t have to swallow.” -Sorry Ed R. just saw it. How about “I’m Gary vaynerchuk reminding you that you should never drink bad wine or think you are too good to drink a less than perfect wine.”

  • Gary, good episode. I give it a 90. Lacked a little depth. Would have been nice to do a vertical covering more years. That would be totally fascinating to me to see you taste and talk about 3 or 4 years of the same wine.

Honestly, Gary, I like your intro and sign off exactly the way they are. I don’t think you need some gimmicky sign off. Most of the ones I’ve read (no offense guys) are either just bad or corny or both. I think what you’ve got is natural and works. Please avoid a gimmicky or corny sign off.

Thanks for the update on the heat episode!! I just KNEW you were working as hard as you possibly could on that. Boy, I just know it’s gonna be the best episode yet!!! Wow, I’m so excited I think I’m gonna pass out!!!!!!

BTW, I agree that Ep #64 rocked. As you know I was floored by the size of WL. Something to be proud of. One thing you never did answer was how come there aren’t Wine Libraries sprinkled all over the US? Have you ever thought about making it a chain? If not, why not?

Also, I hate it when you taste a wine that’s sold out! Particularly if you make me want to taste it. You are a horrible, horrible tease.

Nice vertical tasting. I agree with Tony that it would have been cool to see more vintages taste, but the episode still gives a good feeling for how diverse wine is from vintage to vintage.

While I think that your current sign-off is totally fine, here’s a couple:

“Wine Library TV- From the Vine to the Vlog”

    “Gary Vaynerchuck- Winespeak Decanted”

When will you be introducing some bone dry Savennieres white with age in a tasting? (They deserve a much wider recognition – IMO)

    Gary,
Watched episode #1 again…quite a difference between then and now. (for the better) Its better not to take ourselves so seriously.

The very day you did the ’04 Falesco review, a case with six bottles of the stuff arrived. I am a wine novice and even I thought it was nasty! Which brings me to my question: How big a roll do politics play in this wine game? Why would a professional make such an obvious mistake in judgement? Or was it just a bad day on the job? (Referring to the WS 90 score)

Closing remarks: Use no specific one; we’ll all be waiting to see what you say next, oh wine guru!

    * Gary V…….uncorked and seated

    * Remember…try this at home

    * Gary V…just doin’ my job. (I’m so jealous)

BTW, I guess I’m one of the six ’cause I’ve watched WLTV from the get-go.
    Cheers, Lynne

  • Al D

another sign off. “This is gv,until next time long live the grapes!

At first I was thinking “This is Gary Vaynerchuk and Colin is my homeboy.”

But perhaps “Thanks for watching, and stay subscribed to the greatest show about wine on the Web and a member of the 9rules Network, WineLibrary TV”

I just got back from Napa. I wanted to thank everyone for all the great tips. One of the best tips was to share the tastings with my wife. We were able to taste a lot more wines in lower quantities that way. We went to the following places: Bouchaine, Domaine Carneros, Etude, Hall, Whitehall Lane, Provinence, V Satturi, Ridge, Harvest Moon, Domaine Chandon. I’d be glad to give my impressions on any of these — just let me know.

Major props go to Gary for hooking me up with a personal tour at Ridge where my wife and I were comped our tasting fee and presented with a bottle of Lytton Springs Zin as an anniversary gift. I can’t say enough good things about the trip to Ridge.

Finally, the funniest observation I made was that at 11AM people were very formal and stuffy. By 4PM couples begin groping each other. By 5PM couples are making out all over the place. It’s pretty funny to see it…
