You have not lived until you have had animal crackers and applejack wine! Perfect pairing! Ah, for those college days in New Mexico.

Bordeaux with a hot dog …CLASSIC! There was only one thing that would of made that even better…plastic cup;)
You know some of the most memorable fun times are when you just go outside the box and toss things up. There was an web-article I read where one of the snobbiest (no name mentioned) critic said one of the most memorable best wine experiences he had was drinking Petrus out of a plastic cup eating cheeseburgers at some corned slop joint…why, because it was outrageous!

  • I will from now on refer to you as Vayner-BURP!!!! Classic semi-live blog moment. I am sure you will get nominated now.

Now that the Grease Monkey is vacant near the store, will you guys buy that too and then years later do a tasting out of a GM oil change pan?

I like the Carnitas burrito from Chipotle with a nice Zin. Generally, a CG di Arie has been my fav.

Also, love Cheez-Its and a good merlot.

And lastly, peanut butter & pinot noir.

  • Gary, how about setting up a studio with a window in the background where we can see the inside of the Wine Library, kind of like the “Today” show in Rockefeller Center.

QOD: Taco night w/ Australian Shiraz (Greg Norman 2003 Limestone Coast)

Episode Request: Wines of famous athletes (I may have requested this before).

  • QOD: My guilty pleasure is High School Musical. Oh, there’s more to the question.

As for a guilty pleasure wine/food combo, I’m going to go with Yellow Tail Shiraz and my gravy/hamburger/noodle dish. Cheap food, cheap wine, all tastes great together in a big goopy mess.

Ok…I like the pairing of a Big Red Zin…with a local favorite of Texas Hot Weiner. What in the world is that…Well it is a hot dog fried on a griddle then topped with mustard, special chili, and about a 1/2 cup of sweet onion all on a bun. This is served with a side of french fries also topped with mustard, chili and onions.

There is a disclaimer on this…you sort of ooze the smell of onions for several hours…

    GREAT EPISODE!

I love kraut and spicy mustard on hotdogs also. Hey, anyone from Tampa… is Mel’s Hot Dog Ranch still in business? When I lived there I had dozens of Vienna Red Hots at Mel’s with sauerkraut and mustard (but alas no wine).

Food-wine pairs: actually a nice Alsatian Gewurztraminer is nice with a good dog and kraut– the tangy spiciness of the wine and the faint sweetness match nicely the acidity and spice of the dog.

I always have a hard time with with seared rare tuna and wine. I found that for me pinot noir really goes well with rare tuna. I don’t like whites with rare tuna, and a lot of reds clash too with a sort of rusty or metallic flavor with the fish, but the “sweetness” of most pinots marries well with the tuna and doesn’t give that metallic off-taste.

    My $0.02

    Gary,

Terrific Friday episode, just classic. Very interesting to see the difference in the wine between the two types of hot dogs, I don’t know that I would ever have tried that on my own. I mean, plain hot dog?? Nasty.

QOD – Sometimes I just gotta have a soft taco with a glass of Washington Gewurztraminer. The only thing that can wreck that combo is if the Gewurz turns out to be one of those sickly-sweet, candy-apple ones. ugh. In that case I raid the cellar for a Reisling or a nice rose. Anything crisp and fruity.

I don’t like cheese, but I found a pairing that constitutes my favorite dinner: red wine with thick creamy yoghourt. That’s what I’m enjoying right now, watching WLTV. Thanks, Gary.
