I know this episode is old school and you may not ever see this comment Gary, but I say you take this opportunity to taste the 2006 Turnbull Cab Sauv. I just had it very recently, and it was delicious. It was the first time I had a Turnbull wine. CG gave the 2006 vintage a 91 I think, or maybe even a 92. Think about it GV.

Another top 100? Free shipping has taken away the budget for many months — so hope no ‘must buys’ show up.

QOTD – I am right at the beginning of the Cabernet ladder.

Good episode, I always love when the “Oak Monster” makes an appearance.

This is why from now on, I’m only buying cali cabernets after hearing about them from you. I also fear the Oak Monster, and I’m no longer going to rely on RP to weed out the crap from napa. Someone should throw him into a wood chipper (the Oak Monster, not Robert Parker)

QOTD: I’m in the middle. I started drinking wine when my mom was on her aussi shiraz phase, then it was the zinfandel phase. Now I’m starting to get into more old world cabs from bordeaux (less oak, in any case).

  • nice episode. I’m gonna have to check out that Turnbull.
QOTD: Not sure. I’ve never been a huge Cabernet fan, but I definitely like it. Maybe in the middle?

    1. That shirt has got to be stinky by now…
    2. Leave Bonds alone. He’s trying to work here.
    3. How’s the trip going?

QOTD: Hated Cab for about 4 months because I was trying other things. I went back to it 2 weeks ago while I was in Napa, and though I found that I really liked it, it’s not going to be the center piece of my wine world.

Man I wouldn’t want to be the guy who made the Luna Cab right now. One of the harsher reviews in recent memory. “The Luna is the Jerkoff”.
QOTD- I climbed the California Cabernet ladder, jumped off and now I’m trying to get rid of it (and all of the bottles in my basement I purchased when I thought it was the last word in wine).

Like many, Australian Cabernet was my introduction to wine. Iâ??ve taken many detours through the Cabernet world since,m(ost recently France) but in the past few monthsâ?¦ Australia has again been my thing. Thatâ??s not to say that California isnâ??t great too. My favorite bargain in Californian Cabernet was the â??97 vintage of a Kosher Cabernet (not going to name names) that is ridiculously under-priced because people avoid Kosher wine like the plague.

  • QOTD: I’m at the middle. Although the first wine I ever tried was a Cab that I didn’t like, I actually started getting into wine seriously thanks to Pinot Grigios and Muscats and Spumantes. Now I’ve come back, and I recently bought my first Cabernet, which I tasted and actually enjoyed.

I’m a “lurker” like you describe. I never heard of you until I read that abcnews.com story and discovered your videos. I’ve been watching as many as I can from the archives and love it!

I am pretty new to the wine world and tastings (I relocated to the Bay Area in October) so I love to hear about the less common wines to be discovered.

Now, about Oak… I like it! My first time to visit a winery was the Rancho Bernardo Winery that was walking distance to my house growing up. I couldn’t taste yet, but loved the smell of the Oak barrels. That kind of old, moist wood smell combined with wine spilled on the dirt floor from years past. Is the Oak Monster a matter of personal pallete, or does it indicate an inferior wine? I do tend to enjoy the more earthy, fungus, dirt, old-world?, in reds.

  • Gary,

I totally understand the concept of non-estate wines varying to such a degree. The grapes my wife grows used to go into Kenwood’s Artist Series. They don’t any longer, and the Artist Series has changed from the Cabernet Sauvignon to a “Bordeaux-style blend”. The fact that we’d ultimately like to make a private label from our grapes is just added bonus. 🙂

Hope the trip is going great!

“Fun is drinking vino” (I lol’d)

QOTD: I’m under the Cab ladder… I guess that’s bad luck?

  • half century

Nice one. keep weeding out the jerk offs for us Gary!
QOTD: I was big on the cab ladder in the early 80’s (my restaurant days) then to merlot. more recently big Zins and Bordeauxs. but I really get jazzed with a great Rioja, Ribero, Crianza, and Priorat. Next will be Italy, I know nothing.
“Wine is light held together by moisture.” (Galileo)

Just tried to jump on the Turnbull, and SOLD OUT. Noonan!

Looks like I’ll head back over to the list of free shipping and buy another round.
