I know this episode is old school and you may not ever see this comment Gary, but I say you take this opportunity to taste the 2006 Turnbull Cab Sauv. I just had it very recently, and it was delicious. It was the first time I had a Turnbull wine. CG gave the 2006 vintage a 91 I think, or maybe even a 92. Think about it GV.

QOTD; seems to me that Cab continues to pop up, off and on thru my years of wine experience. Usually enjoy them, but we’ve found with so many varietals and blends to try, they tend to show up only on occasion. I can’t say there’s any wine I don’t like, thanks to you! Hope you and your family are enjoying your cruise!

  • BruceP

QOTD. In the middle. Started out more with Syrah and Pinot, tasting my way through Bordeaux and Cali, but at a leisurely pace. Still too much Pinot, Rhones, and Italians to drink as well. Don’t think it’s ever going to be the focal point it is for some.

I don’t want to be a lurker. QOTD, I’ve tasted my fair share of cabs and like them a lot, but it’s not all I drink, for sure.

I’m sure you get asked this many times, but what do you do with all the wine left over?

  • QOD: Definitely at the end of the ladder. I’ve been to the Cabernet altar, worshiped there for years and years, and moved on, tried the fruit-ified Syrahs of Australia, the century vine Zins, the Merlots, the Sangios, etc. Now, I’m actually looking back at my Cabs that have sat in my cellar for a dozen or so years and go, “oh YEAH, that’s right, there’s a reason I let that lay down for a decade…”

    Good times, I tell ya.

Is it weird lighting or has Gary gone grey since the beginning of the day?

  • Napa Valley Cabernet has come SO far in the last 15 years. It’s truly amazing. There were very few worth drinking until the late 80’s. Oak is the easiest flavor to add and it reeks of going for scores, not balance.

QOTD I’m at the old guy phase of the Cabernet ladder. It better be good and have some layers or I’m just not interested. I’d rather hasve a good Zinfandel or Rhone wine that a “power” (oak and alcohol) point-buster.

  • OttawaB

Great episode. Will look for the Turnbull, but I’m not sure we get it up here. As far a Cabernet Sauvignon goes, I’m at the end of the ladder. I will always come back to it, even though I drink plenty of other varieties. I prefer the Cab blends better — from Bordeaux, Napa, etc. Just smoother and more refined, more complexity.

    Thanks for the recommendation.

QOTD: I would have to say that Cabernet was really the first wine to lift me up and drop me on my head. I knew that I would be spending too much $ on it and have. I have definitely ventured out into other varietals but big, bold, complex Cabs are still my favorite.

  • Karl Laczko

Gary, you’re still holding it together – I’m impressed.

Only ever had 4 Cal-Cabs, all of which I realise are not the best available (best of those for me was Kendall-Jackson 2001). As I am not a Cab-Sauv fanatic don’t know when the next one will be (2 US ones currently in the cellar, Chateau Ste Michelle 2002 (I know, it’s Washington) & Jekel 2003.

QOTD – On the Cabernet (Sauvignon) ladder, I’ve fallen off. Rather try something else, the other Cabernet (Franc), Malbec, Pinotage – so many other grapes to try, Cab-Sauv can wait.

Wow, never gotten in this early…

QOTD: I haven’t necessarily gotten on the ladder so much yet…A bordeaux blend here and there, but not a lot of straight cab sauv varietals.

Did the Cabernet, stopped, started cellaring some the last 2 years, not ready to start consuming again as of yet. Great show, When are you going to try the Cafaro?

Well, I will follow up. I too am a lurker. Love the show a lot. But I do find it quit hard to find the american wines in my stores. I live in Denmark, and mostly drink italian wines.

QOTD: I’m fell off the ladder some time ago, but my girlfriend doesn’t really like anything else, so I migth try a few steps again one of these days.

Got a case of the 2004 Turnbull in the Eurocave. Good luck finding any at this point. Gary rules; RP is so wrong – “go chew on a piece of oak, buddy”

nice shoutout to Michael J Fox, Hulk Hogan, and the Quik bunny. Takes me back to my childhood. The review of the Turnbull definately got me excited to go back to my cellar and dig out my Cali cabs, and to add the Turnbull to the collection. QOTD: still towards the bottom of the ladder, but slowly trying to claw my way up. Nice episode, enjoy your trip.

Nice episode GV…. I haven’t had any of the wines that you had on the show. I did however have the Luna Reserve Cab. It was ok just not worth its $85 price tag… I will have to seek out Turnbull sometime see just how much thunder it brings!

Thanks and hope your enjoying Greece.

Nice episode. who was taking pics?

QOTD: i try to drink as many different wines as possible, but Napa Cab and steaks on the grill are a match made in heaven for me. So that puts me on the sporadic napa cab later i guess.

QOTD: THEE wine that got me started was a Medoc cru bourgeois and a 1990 Beringer Private reserve. But I’ve not gotten too far up the Cali Cab ladder,, just too damn expensive. So I get my Cab fix from Bordeaux.
Lot’s of other great red grapes out there also, so I find myself drinking Cab maybe 1 out of 12 bottles I consume. Now you know, the rest of the story.
    🙂 🙂

  • waibeans

I’m still not even ON the ladder..

Back when I din’t know jack about wine I would drink Cab. To me memories of Cab are that it has a generic wine taste. Last time I tried one was at the S+W dinner and I wasn’t impressed at the red fruit qualities. Who knows maybe someday soon I’ll try one again..

Ever hear of something called Clone 5? LOL

QOTD: bottom/middle of the ladder. Since we’re new to wine, we started exploring areas of wine that we could really sink our purple teeth into that weren’t so MASSIVE and that wouldn’t break the bank as we’re constantly trying new things. Aglianicos. Albarinos. Aussie Shiraz. New Zealand Suavignon Blancs. Developing the palette and appreciation before serious tackling wines whose QPRs are generally lower.

Of course I’ve drank a boatload of cab. Just haven’t TASTED it the way I do now.

I love California Cabs and have quite a few cases lying around the house but have come to appreciate Bordeaux more and more. Some California Cabs I enjoy are Reverie, Hartwell Estate, Flora Springs (Trilogy), St. Clement (Orroppas), Chimney Rock, Stagg’s Leap Wine Cellars, Pine Ridge & Arrowood. Most blend in other Bordeaux varietals and many if not all use estate grown fruit. Even still, Bordeaux tends to be more balanced, elegant and food friendly.

    QOTD: 3/4 up the ladder

Great Epiosode again Gary. Big fan of it. Please move on
QOTD: I had some serious CS out of diffrent countries and styles in my life, but 100% CS it’s still not a big love of mine. As a part of a Cuvée, it can much more easily bring “the thunder” to me.

QOTD: Generally not in the Cab world, occasically I get to taste some well aged Cali Cabs that are just amazing but are out of my price range to begin with. Since my trip to Walla Walla in early May I’m starting to enjoy a lot of Washington Cabs, so maybe I’m in the middle.

  • Mike S.

Never climbed the Cabernet ladder. My first love is red Burgundy, while my mistress is easily Australian Shiraz. An odd pairing? Perhaps. But, it feels good to break a rule every now and then.

I’m more of a “Pinot Ladder” kind of guy, but in either case I’m in the middle of the ladder. Lately I’ve been scouring the world for grapes, regions, and styles I’m unfamiliar with. Pretty fun. Someday I will undoubtedly go back to Pinot, probably after the current craze moves on to some other grape.
