I know this episode is old school and you may not ever see this comment Gary, but I say you take this opportunity to taste the 2006 Turnbull Cab Sauv. I just had it very recently, and it was delicious. It was the first time I had a Turnbull wine. CG gave the 2006 vintage a 91 I think, or maybe even a 92. Think about it GV.

QOTD: I’m new to the wine world. Where am I on the ladder? Walking around, exploring the estate noticing… “Hmmmmm… there’s an old ladder over there, wonder where it goes?”

  • Billman

QOTD: funny question~ I started on cabs, then experimented, then back to cabs, now I’ve been experimenting again for the last year (does that mean the experimental period will continue indefinitely, and no more cab ladder?)

    GV,
Nice episode. Love the Cali cabs. good info. Just bought a bottle of Luna so I am now wondering if I made a good choice. If for nothing else, should be good example of the old Oak Monster.
QOTD: I mix Cabs in when the mood, or meal, is right. Love the Hartig for the price, just had some 2004 Ladera which rocks, and save the Togni for special occassions. However, after watching WLTV, I’m expanding my palate, so I love lots of different grapes.I agree with Lousianna George. But when I have steak, it’s a cab!

Cabernets got me liking wine with dinner many year ago. I like to try other Reds, but Cabernets are what I come back to when I want a good wine. however I am in the $15 – 20 bottle at the wine store.

I’d have to say that this is what I’m talking about, Cabs Cabs Cabs. I love to drink Cabs, I could watch episodes on Cabs all day..

Great show, I am definitely going to seek out the Turnbull to get that experience you’re talking about. (CAN’T WAIT)

QOTD: I’m in the middle, but drink them all. What ever the food the right wine goes with it.. ah!

Shocker! Turnbull takes it? Didn’t see that one coming.

QOTD – Lovin it at the top.

  • QOTD: I’ve been off the cabernet ladder for awhile. As you have said, the California Cabs are too expensive. For the money, I can get some other great stuff. These days, I am into Italian wines and Rhone wines mostly. I have purchased several of your bordeauxs. I keep trying Spainish wines. Tried Zinfandel many times, but it is just way too fruity for me. I had a 2003 Calistoga Cellars Red Zinfandel I thought was pretty damn good. I do like Cabernet quite a bit still and will definetly look for the Turnbull. If I can’t find here, I guess I’ll be putting an order in. Sounds worth it.

QOTD: I am currently on the Cab ladder. Started with Merlot, went to Zins, now, mostly Cabs, but money is a factor, so its up and down we go. Nonetheless, its always fun no matter what the wine of the moment is.

  • I will always have respect for Cabernet — but blended with other Bordeaux varieties. Blend it. Blend it. Blend it. Let it shine but don’t make it carry the whole show.

But that said, give me Grenache.

I haven’t many California Cabs in the last few years. One big reason is that the more prestigious ones are ridiculously expensive up here in BC. If anyone has pity on Canadian winos, you could send us up some Lokoya.

I am going down the ladder. Much too much of my allocation is cab-based – and I enjoy Barolo, Brunellos, and Red Burgundy so much more now.

    Sup G!!

QOTD: The wife and I started on the Melot ladder, then we went to the Cal Cab latter, then we took a divide at Aussie shiraz and Douro. I am currently drinking a bottle of Albarino with some baked fish…so we really haven’t made it back around to cab yet although 30% of my cellar is cab. I continue to buy it, but I haven’t started drinking it. So it goes…

QOTD: Started with the $5 and $6 cabs, then went away from then, and now that I’ve got more to spend, I’m finding I have more cabs than anything else, unless you count French blends as one category.

    Gary,

Great episode! Loved the fun fact – you should do more of those.

QOTD: My wine hobby started with $8.00 Cabs and now has expanded to all the other great wines (Barolo, Malbec, Pinot, Bordeaux, etc.) – most (include Cabs in the $12.00 to $50.00 range.

  • Harold

QOTD: Have never really stepped foot on the Cab ladder; I’m afraid of height$. Of course I’ve had some here and there but it has never become a focus. However, your rave review and the price of the Turnbull has me wanting to pick up a bottle so I might be poised at the base of the ladder. You never know.

“…and the bunny rabbit from Quick is, like, ‘What are you doing?’.” *hilarious*

A(nswer)otD: Being from CA I’m at end of my Cabernet ladder. I’ve been venturing out into other arenas for the last few years. I find that the value on Cabernet (especially from Napa) just isn’t there; the prices are usually extremely inflated (as you alluded to a few times in the episode).

QOTD: The cabs are pretty much on hiatus at our house; maybe because the weather’s getting warm.

86 points for a wine you *don’t* like?

QOD: Tail end, if not off entirely … why, when I can hit the Loire for a fraction of the price? Actually, to be fair every once in awhile nothing else but a slab of meat and a Napa cab will do, and there are still a few good ones at sane prices …

QOTD: I am pretty over 99% of Cali Cab, over rated, over oaked and waaay overpriced. The exception for me is White rock vineyards. Gary, can you pleeeeease taste White Rock on the show? Maybe one reason I like them is they’re a Bordeaux blend and pretty old world for Napa.

Oh and they’re actually underpriced for Napa Cab.
