I know this episode is old school and you may not ever see this comment Gary, but I say you take this opportunity to taste the 2006 Turnbull Cab Sauv. I just had it very recently, and it was delicious. It was the first time I had a Turnbull wine. CG gave the 2006 vintage a 91 I think, or maybe even a 92. Think about it GV.

Love your show, kind of bumbed, my steaming is real slow. I’ll wright again when the net is faster.

  • Ryan

GV – I just found out about your website a week or two ago, and I’m hooked on the video blogs. As a beginner, it’s nice to have someone explain the ins and outs of wine. I look forward to future episodes. Keep up the good work!

My .02; Show me some California wines that have some subtlety, do any exist?
I’m tired of the overdone Paris Hilton-esque wines from Cali, and some of them make me want to give the oak monster an uppercut and knock his ass out for abusing my palate!

QOTD: Still at the beginnhing of the cabernet ladder, though I find myself visiting cab less and less often lately.

QOTD: Im somewhere in the middle probably. Mostly I started with other varieties and have been looking more at cabernet lately. The thing that holds me back is that while I really want to find wines from California that I like, my budget is not unlimited and I am sadly often dissapointed by California wines at the price point I typically target.

Anybody else getting sick of that green shirt??

QOTD = I guess I’m still climbing… and don’t think I’ll ever stop. What can I say I love red meat and big cabs……..

Hard to believe how expensive your basic California Cab is getting!

QOTD: I cut my teeth on Bordeaux from the mid 80’s at about age 18-20. That’s what some of my family was into at the time. No wonder I originally thought it tasted like medicine. So Cabernet has been with me all the way, I learned to love it then, and now 18 years later I still love it.

What up, GV! I’m in the middle right now. Started with the Cab and have moved on, but will seek out the Turnbull. Thanks for the tip! How’s Crete treating you???

Oh Gary, Gary… Of course you’re always on top of your game, but what is this? Secrets from us? Who was your visitor flashing along? You did need to focus, but oh, so distracted you were. Shame on Eric too: You’ve got to swing the camera like you did once before, do have the courage, to show the VIP.

?D: Midstream… and I think I’ll always be. In fact, you opened my eyes to non-CabSauve. Because, you changed the wine world a bit more. Yes, there are other varietals, wineries and regions that can deliver a persuasive wine experience. Including Merlot. Including Pinot Noir. Including Camenere. And blends.

dkeck: You can use the quicktime version, it loads faster and more smoothly. (“Steaming”: who are you?)

  • Thank you for that bit of education on the Cabs. As for the QOTD…I am not really on the Cab ladder, I am more like the guy that just walked underneath the ladder and only now realized that there was one (not to mention the years of bad luck). I am not considering getting on the ladder…

    …this is me considering it.

  • Wave

I love the cab ladder.I go up and down it all the time. There are more interesting and cheaper wines out there, but you gotta throw down some cali juice from time to time.
Poor Luna !lucky you didn’t have any soap handy or you would have washed your mouth out!

  • I meant to say noW considering…not noT considering. Let’s pretend none of us saw that.

A fan? Your hair isn’t blowing. Hopefully the glasses will stay on the table.

I’m drinking a Torrentes right now as a direct result of WLTV (my first one ever). And I’M LOVING IT!!!

Nice tidbit on the estate grown info.

Flash photography? Is this a dirty film?

Clams? Is this the Flinstone Kids? BTW — Did you ever wonder why the technology got better even thought Fred and Wilma were younger?

How would this Turnbull match up with a sesame bagel?

I bet Michael J Fox wishes he had that time machine. Oh, that wasn’t nice…

Pine cones in choc milk deserves a t-shirt.

The flashes really make me think a girl is going to walk in soon…

Huh. Doesn’t Luna install vinyl siding and carpet? I didn’t know they made wine too.

Which wine has the biggest cedar component? I LOVE cedar in cabs.

I SO walked that fine class-clown line. Matt Robinson did not.

QOTD: I’m in the middle. I used to drink a lot of cab but don’t drink much anymore.

    Very good episode today,

Wow- Turnbull’s already gone and i couldnt be watching this more than 5 hours post release- the power of GV. QOTD: I’m not sure we fit any of those catagories. We started stong in Napa cabs like most but now I’m just so tired of them I search out anything i can but them.

I was very strong in Cabs about two years ago. I am trying many new reds now. For every ten bottles I probably buy 1 cab now.

Great episode, Gary. QOD: I guess I’m on the end of the ladder…(the top of the ladder?). Started loving Cabs, moved into Zins, Pinots, Riojas and the like, and am now back to including Cab in my diet .

  • QOTD: Where am I on Cali Cab?

    No where!!!

I drink alot of wine from all over the world and, like you experienced on the show, I find them over hyped, over priced and inconsistent. Dollar for dollar, I’ll take a Bordeaux any day over a California Cab.

Great episode I like cabs alot, will definitly seek out the Turnbull..QOTD I’m on and off my cab ladder all the time the only funk i get into with wine is red … you would think at the top of my cab ladder there is a steap slide that ends in a pile of bear traps, with as often as I’m on and off of it.I love cabs but I love most reds so I try not to stick to one in particular. I guess it’s time to get a new cab ladder, the bottom 5 rungs are wore out, ahhhh maybe i’ll just flip it over.I hope your enjoying you trip catch ya later.

I have been off the cabernet ladder for several years because of the high prices. I prefer zins and syrahs or shirazes.

  • I am solidly on the cabernet ladder. Cabs and Bordeaux blends rock. There are some solid wines values. It isn’t necessary to spend a fortune on a bottle of great wine. Thanks Gary for your comments on Turnbull. Definately a value Cab. Wish more California wine producers would learn to restrain the amount of time their wine is left in contact with Oak. The Oak Monster can overpower an otherwise elegant wine.

QOTD: I probably have more Zins and Barolos than Cabs. When I’m going out to dinner and I know its a red wine meal I’ll pick up a Zin or Barolo without checking the year, but with Cab its got to be at least 10 years old or I won’t touch it. The more I learn and experiment, the lower on the ladder goes the Cabs. Thanks for introducing me to very good Spanish and Australian reds. 2thdr

I’d like to see some Silver Oak action, maybe against Dominus and say Cuvaison?
QOTD – I’m near the end…..I started in California, moved to Australia, then Bordeaux, the to Shiraz, Syrah, Pinto etc and now and really back at the beginning……

  • good episode–the cheapest is the best! QOTD: It’s not so much a ladder as a suitcase! Let’s see, I lived in Napa where I spent a lot of time with some real “typical” Americans (The Sterling, the ste. micheles, The Franciscans, etc.); moved to Spain (the Mas Donis family is coming to the wedding this June!); head over to France (where it’s hard not to like the skinny gamins–but they tend to be too young); then on to Italy (where my stay has been all too brief). Spent a LOT of time in Barossa valley, where I still crash at Sparky’s and Sarah’s (and plan to visit this June!) 😉 But, sometimes I drop by Napa and see friends, like the Paraduxx, Amizetta, and Larkmead families. Then it’s off to Marlborough, NZ (where I’ve actually visited–amazing place) for some spritzey/limey/cat pee QPR R&R. Phew. Back to Vermont, where the wine of the day is usually accidentally hardened apple juice! Cheers.
