I know this episode is old school and you may not ever see this comment Gary, but I say you take this opportunity to taste the 2006 Turnbull Cab Sauv. I just had it very recently, and it was delicious. It was the first time I had a Turnbull wine. CG gave the 2006 vintage a 91 I think, or maybe even a 92. Think about it GV.

  • I’m a lurker for no more!

25 US dollars is in the max I will pay on wine (not including restaurant drinking); sometimes I can be persuaded to spend 30 bones, as you say. However, once again, you illustrated that the more expensive wine is not always the best.

If I too, have been off the Cabernet latter for a while. I’ve been drinking Merlot, Pinot Noir, Pinotage, and Malbec for reds.

    Cheers.

This marks the end of my lurker status.

QOTD: I started with Zinfandel, then got my then-girlfriend (now-wife) into wine and she started on Cab. — and brought me with her. Now we’re off of Cab. and branching out. We were lured in by Gwertztraminer had a brief whites stage then went on a Pinot Noir kick. I’m not sure what’s next but it may be Cab.

  • Bossman

Are sure there weren’t the letters TIC on that Luna bottle? Who else would lay out $50 bones for a, well for that?

I started with cabs, I took the ladder, leaned it against the fence, climbed “over the top” to the yard of fruit bomby Aussie Shiraz and syrahs in general. Right now I’m combing that lawn exploring the slight variations of blades and loving every minute of it.

QOTD- I have just found a love for wine over the past year or two. So I mainly drink Cabs. Now I have started to branch out, but with mostly reds.

    Hey GV,

Thanks for doing the Juslyn…QOTD – in the discovering phase of Cabs…have been drinking too many blends to know a lot yet about Cabernet.

I’m a little bored with cabs…I’ll try anything new – new grape varietals interest me. I have not explored spain/portugal as much as I want to yet…they have some nice reds. Kind of like the stock market…I try to catch it before everyone else knows about it.

    QOTD:
I seldom if ever drink a California Cab; overpriced, over oaked, high alcohol. I prefer to get my Cab from a Bordeaux or a Super Tuscan.

GV… been lurking a bit, but your QOTD piqued me. I was only a cab guy for many years… however, a trip to Australia got me hooked on Shiraz… and now I am mostly disappointed with cabs… there are some I love… like Meyer Vineyard… but it’s Glaetzer and Kilikanoon for me now.

    Cheers

    GV,
Thanks for the great review. ANSWER: I’m in the middle of the Cab ladder, so I really am excited about picking up a bottle of Turnbull. I’m going to the Wine Shop Friday, I’ll see if they carry that brand.

I’m enjoying the show. Great job.

    THanks,
    Jeff Victor

Line of the Day: “Bite a tree”. I lol’ed.

QOTD: I drink no cab. I don’t even own a ladder.

  • By your definition I am in the middle. I used to be a big merlot drinker then evolved to red zins and pinot noirs, and since discovering some really nice cabs a year or so ago they have easily become my new favorite. Karl Lawrence and Stags Leap Fay Estate are two of my favorite cabs.

QOTD: I’m in the middle of my cab ladder. Usually I prefer a nice cab based bordeaux style blend (or Meritage if someone is willing to spend the money on the name license). I do appreciate a really nicely made Cab. Walla Walla Washington has produced some really stellar ones!

OK Now I’m not a lurker, you’re talking to those other guys.

QOTD: I have yet to get in to cabs. I like hearing recommendations from others who enjoy them and who can describe exactly what it is about them that is so great (like you, GV!). There sure are a lot of bad ones out there, which is likely the ones I have been trying and wondering who the hell drinks the stuff. But one day I plan to experience a great can sauv with a great steak and maybe I”ll move on up (or down?) this little ladder o’ mine.
Meanwhile, there are so many wine and food pairings and apertifs and post-dinner drinks to try, I’d say cabernets are about 5 more years down the road in my wine-experience journey.

I don’t know where I am on the ladder. I started on the crappy Woodbridge ladder, found bordeaux and now feel that, in general CA cab is overpriced. We have enjoyed the St. Francis cabs from Sonoma. Am I too young in my cab progession that I prefer the style of dusty cabs from the valley floor in Oakville, Rutherford and Stag’s Leap District? I need to sleep on this and expound tomorrow.

That many wines in one day. I’m surprised your palate isn’t destroyed. I wouldn’t drink wine for a week after that (well maybe a day). I like cab but it is by no means my favorite. I was never a HUGE cab guy. I started as more of a syrah lover. I’m buying more recently with the bordeaux’s of 05 though but cabs are only about 15-20% of my collection.

  • I was super into Cabs when I first got into wines and still drink them but they are not in heavy rotation.

    Great episode.
I fell off the CA Cabernet ladder in the late 90’s due to price. There are still a lot of very good ones out there but I only drink them at restaurants when someone else is buying. I’m gonna get me some of that Turnbull though.

  • Nice show Gear-Bear ohh great one…protector of the “Oak Monster”
I am a huge fan of Turnbull myself! Although I purchased a case of half bottles of 2003 and 5 of 11 were corked, I was a very discouraged. I am glad to see you’re take on the 2004, I will be sure to pick up a few bottles. I was considering passing on them this year, but you brought back memories.

  • Spanky

Kinda on the middle of the ladder with Cabs. I for one, love the big Cali cabs and it was what I migrated to during a blind taste test of reds. However, it seems the ones that I like that bring the opulence are $40+ and I just don’t want to drink those during the week with dinner. I usually end up popping the cork on $20 Zin, Shiraz, or Chardonnay.

Looks like Turnbull is now on the to try list. Also great on the free shipping options. Too bad one can only buy (afford) so much!

Been having some problems watching the video – both on WLTV and on Viddler the last 90 seconds gets hung up.

Whats up Hollywood!! Nice photos during the tasting. Should have had a red carpet or La Lohan strewn over the table! I started with Cabs, and haven’t gone full force back yet. Wish I was in Greece right now, I would be drinking coffee and still recovering from last nights ouzo.

I am hit and miss on the cab, trying to look for great wines under $15. Doing alot of eploring. Then I am going to sit down and cork 6 wines and focus on the differences between the grape varieties.

    Go Seahawks

  • Kirk

QOTD: Gary…..I am at the end of my ladder. I went all out for the first year and that was about the ONLY varietal I would drink. However one trip to Oregon changed all of that. I started drinking other wines. I’m at the point where I feel very lucky to be working in the industry as a wine director at a restaurant. I am also at the point where there are wines that are more interesting to me that I want to own & taste.

QOTD: I’m smack in the middle, but I’m probably nearing the end. I’ve been enjoying a lot of Shiraz and Zins lately, but to me the Cab is still the undisputed king of the grape world.
