Gary, Don’t you dare change! What do you think has kept all of us original Vayniacs loyal in the first place? You aren’t afraid of the “system”, you’ll tell the truth about the wines even if you have a butt load sitting in your store and you are the real deal. Remember, you’re out to change the wine world, not have it change you! Keep on rockin’!!

Gary, i don’t know who out there is calling you a jackass, but you have the potential. Ride the fence but PLEASE, PLEASE don’t turn into the next Emerald. I dig the prose, get scared of lucky charmes, wine can be fun but not entertaining.

Quote of the day from M. Chapoutier ” One does not have to be a gynecologist to make love” (rough translation form french)

QOTD – i dig the room, almost iraq indie style – no frills. what about doing a segment on different glasses, carafes etc… too nerdy?`how about some vin de pays from the south of france like Domaine de Trevallon, Mas de Daumas Gassac… even some Bandols : ) One last suggestion, what about a portfolio from a producer… like Chapoutier, or a vertical from someone like Lewis? the 96 bordeaux are starting to come around…. eat em up, yum!

QOTD: I like episodes like this where you look at odd new wines. It is great to get ideas about new varietals. It would be nice though, to get your take on some of the huge mass produced brands. Stuff that is really approachable and in everyones supermarket.

QOTD: If you don’t change anything, I’ll still watch and appreciate. But since you asked, I’d like:
    – time-lapse tastings: instead of 4 wines, just 1 wine tasted 4 times over maybe a 12 hour period
    – guests: I’m sure that after the time mag article you’ll have a line around the block of people worth talking to on the show
    – sherry & port: has to be the best QPR booze in the world, and can really help to broaden wine appreciation

    Blind tastings are fun too.

  • Man, I don’t know who ever could of asked you to taste the Beauzeaux…They should be punished by forcing them to sit and watch Joey Chestnut pound 66 over and over again, while eating Nathan’s Famous, because that how I felt after consuming it. I am a pretty good fan of BV wines and got hooked into purchasing that debacle…ouch!

Anywho…Did we scare you away? Let us know either way!

QOTD – Obscure Food and Wine Parings are always cool…This is where you can really break the “Wine Rules”

I thought I had tasted a lot of stuff, but you got me with Kadarka.

QOTD: I like the idea of doing food-wine pairings. If wine A is better than wine B when paired with food X, and wine B is better than wine A when paired with food Y, what does that tell you about numerical rating systems? The wine with the bigger number isn’t always better. (Maybe each wine should be given several numbers, one number for each of several benchmark foods one might pair the wine with. How about that?)

Gary-QOTD: Remember, I asked you to taste the 2006 Vinum Chenin Blanc South Africa?????? It is not traditional Chenin Blanc but only costs $11.99.

Too bad about the Beauzeaux. How far it has fallen from its good natured, well spirited beginnings. My wife and I visited BV a few years ago when Beauzeaux was only available at the winery. The tasting room guide told a whimsical tale of a wine that was originally produced only for a local event. People enjoyed it so much that they continued to produce it in modest quantities for sale only in the tasting rooms in Napa. Another good idea gone terribly awry as a winery scrambles to get a piece of the “Big House Red/Red Truck Revolution”.

QOTD: How about comparing two vintages of a particular wine when they are both simultaneously available? There could be a QPR comparison, for example when an older Bordeaux is more expensive – is it really worth it?

Gary – Great episode. I am excited about the Rose and to try the Kadarka (ok, well maybe not that one).

QOTD: Well, I can’t say for sure about things I want to change/add/etc. I can tell you that I FORBID!!!you to change into some uptight jerk off with his shirt buttoned up to his nose… that is why we who knew and loved you BEFORE time mag, etc.. are attracted to this show… because you are honest and straight forward and call them like you smell and taste them.

I think I could hook you up in Sept/Oct/Nov with our Exec Chef and Sous Chef in our beautiful spa setting to do a food/wine pairing show…. then in one swoop you could do a VA wine thing too. Besides, I’m so going to keep bugging you about coming to VA until you do!:)

QOTD: Dont tone down! I agree with some other comments about injecting a little more info on decanting/decantors and other accessories that might be important for us to consider. Also, I would like your opinion if some of the wines you taste would be good to age, if so, why and for how long.

  • OK Gary, you probably already know this, but in case you are feeling a little needy:

    You are NOT a jerk!
You are NOT annoying (you are extremely fun to watch, and I have told so many people about you!)
    You are NOT over-the-top!

Hey, nice black shirt today. I like that!

QOTD: There are times when labels on the wine can still confuse me, though I am getting much better at it (the more I drink, the more I learn — hey, cool quote, huh? Use it, but please say that I said it first!)… so, MAYBE you could occasionally describe what the label says and what it means, especially for the more confusing wines like many Italians, the French, and yes even German wines. At least for the really different ones, you know? That way folks may feel more comfortable in a wine store when confronted with all the different bottles, they may learn to understand more of what they are seeing.

Thanks once again and again for all you do! You’ve most certainly changed MY wine world!

  • Old Beauzeaux now that sounds challenging
Very interesting. I have never had Zweigelt or Kadima but maybe one of these days.
Don’t change anything. Just watch that the sound levels don’t go up and down.

    Gary, QOTD response:
I would like to see a show that would help to dispel the rules of food and wine pairing. I work as a sommelier in a seafood restaurant, and it drives me up a wall when people will only drink white wine. RED WINE with FISH!? BLASPHEMY!

I’d like to see an episode on Canadian reds, from BC especially, but especially on Michigan wines. Wyncroft from Michigan is producing phenomenal Chardonnay, Gwertz. , reisling, pinot noir and some very interesting meritages. Your opinion of these i’d be very interested in.

Long time lurker chiming in. Stick to wine and leave history alone. CC did not kill a lot of native Americans or Indians unless you count all the diseases he brought over. He was fairly humane compared to guys like Cortez and Pizarro. The wine part of the show is excellent.
