Too bad about the wines this time around. . . . . !

Have had the Casa in the past and sometimes it ROCKS, and sometimes it blows, so i somewhat agree with you on that review. And yes, it’s really Bordeaux like in style no question about it!

    Gary,
I have been lurking around the last few months. I thoroughly enjoyed all 279 episodes. I thought Friday’s scavenger hunt was great and have learned more about wine from your FREE videoblog than I could have ever learned anywhere else. Keep up the great work and kudos to you for consistently giving viewers your honest opinion about the wines! Thanks for the wristband!

  • Gary,
Really love the education–pulling us out of the “wine cave” and showing us the light. One question: where’s the French cab??? I did a tasting of Shiraz/Syrah from around the world–France, Australia, California, etc. It was amazing how different the French and Aussie’s were–one of the best distinctions between new and old world red wine.

    Cheers and keep on tasting!

What we like about Gary is that he is not in anyone’s pocket, not even his own. Also, he’s not the only reviewer out there; just the most fun reviewer because he takes chances and doesn’t take it too seriously. I’d enjoy a Molly Dooker revisit or rematch at some point.
QOTD: The most major letdown I had was when I went on a deep sea fishing trip in Mazatlan. I didn’t used to be seasick, but the minute the boat left the dock I was sick. And I was constantly sick except for the times that I fell asleep. And the other people there asked me why I had come on the boat if I was so seasick, and I was too exhausted and sick and tired to say something mean to them.

OK…what the hell was with that email? as you read it all I could hear was:

“WAHH look at me, I’m a wine expert too! How DARE you disagree with me over this blatantly subjective topic?!?”

I mean honestly…does he not understand that palettes vary? “You’ve lost cred’ with me because we don’t agree” is stunningly ignorant and childish, and as for the distributors comment…doesn’t WL PAY THEM FIRST?! Correct me if I’m wrong, please, but I was under the impression that the store pays the distributor and then the customer pays the store, thus making any comments you make about the wine purely your problem!

    okok, I’m done.

QOTD: Recently…NOTHING. Transformers was awesome. Harry potter movie was awesome. Harry potter BOOK was fucking killer…I’m about to go check my mail…I bet that’ll be disappointing!

QOTD- This is a little food geeky, but I went to see Mario Batali, Lydia Bastianich, and Marrissa Tomei on a panel at the Smithsonian and the moderator ruined the whole damn thing. Mario was great but this moderator was a complete amateur.

The other let down is global warming. I thought DC would be beach front by now.

I think is is getting to be nearly impossible to find a drinkable Cab outside of Bordeaux. I have given up on California because it dominates every other flavor

And because I am leaving comments backwards, isn’t that first comment what happens already? I mean was the dude a distributor? Gary, thanks for having confidence in regular people to discover what they like, even if it yellow tail.

  • Gary,
I just barrel sampled my 06 Cab and then turned on WLTV and what luck it’s a Cab episode. One of my favorite Napa Cab producers is Tulocay Winery.

    Salute!

Chased the websites on Friday and don’t you change a thing!!
Your show is all about taking the ‘snob’ out of wine tasting and making it fun. Keep up the good work.

I ordered a Greek Chicken for lunch last week — very disappointing. But if that’s the worst I’ve got, then I’m doing pretty well!

I agree about the distributors. If you pan a wine that you’ve got 100 cases of in stock, it’s your problem if it doesn’t sell. The distributor already got their money. Plus, as you’ve said before, WLTV doesn’t even impact YOUR sales that much since “99% of the customers don’t watch WLTV”. How could it impact mollydooker accross the board? Anyways,

QOTD: Last week’s shows on Monday and Wednesday. Just kidding. Probably the 2004 Ercavio, and the 2004 Trimbach Pinot Blanc. Big let downs

QOTD: Indians opener last week against CWS. Should have clobbered them and couldn’t get out of the sixth. Indians had a nice rally in the 8th to end it 11-10, but like your wines today the finish was too little-too late.

Enjoy your trip. Thanks for taping ahead – you know how grouchy we can be when we don’t get our daily fix.;-)

QOTD: Went to a Shakespeare play that was a major disappointment. (Timon of Athens)

By the way, Gary, I went clothes shopping and tried on a plaid shirt. The shirt has what can only be described as whited-out areas. And my wife, who claims not to be a Vayniac, said the “plaid monster” was being toned down by these areas. You’re like the Borg–and not the Swedish kind. Change your motto to, “You will be assimiated!”

  • QOTD:

I was REALLY anticipating doing the podcast with you today…but then I got shined on because one of us (not me) has to go to Hungary!!

OH THE LET DOWN!! THE DISAPPOINTMENT!!

    Yet, I move on…

    (Sorry…had to)

    Safe travels, G-MAN!

    G-Man

Email guy is so totally correct G-Man, you have way too much power. You see when you talk people listen. I am sure right now the FBI is listening in on every wine soaked word you utter. For all we the commoners know you could in fact be setting up some super covert illuminati revolution to over throw the Gallos. Don’t think some of us aren’t smart enough to catch on, I’ve seen what the G-Man is cookin’.

But if it makes you feel any better-I too have lost my allocation. I dated this beautiful girl for a couple months. The mood was right, Enya was playing on the stereo, things were going real well. And all of a sudden allocation gone. It was terrible. And for that son-of-a-distributor to wish something like that on you is just dispicable.

QOTD: Leaking bottle of 05’SeaSmoke Southing.

PS: Does anyone else feel like free speech is over rated?! Impeach Gary 07′!

I was doubly dissapointed on thrusday – with a 2005 MollyDooker Carnival of Love (too over oaked, too over the top and fake) and then a 80’s retro rock show at the local concert hall in my town of Agoura Hills,

You probably tried it but they make a digestive/liquor thing in Hungary called Unicum. It’s erm… worth a try. And whilst on the subject of that kinda’ thing – what about Grappa? An Italian once told me that if you understand Grappa, you understand what it is to be an Italian. Am I rambling..? Tonight I may have been enjoying my wine a little too much. I got a headache. Have a good trip and hope you find time to relax and reflect – maybe in one of those bath sauna things they have out there. It’s all good. All good.

I was going to lurker status on this show, but I changed my mine. Why because I can.
Just like my palette it has it’s own taste, and just like everyone else’s, remember that you Vayniacs. Gary does these shows to give you his expert knowledge of different wines and how they taste on his his his palette.

I really didn’t have anything for the QOTD..

    Everything is great!

QOTD: Squirrel Nut Zippers in concert. I’ve like them for about ten years now, but their concert last Friday night here in The DSM (Des Moines in the hizzy) was like that last wine. It was good, but not spectacular.

  • Gary, despite the wines, it was a great episode. I too enjoy the education aspect of such shows. Plus, the way you handled your critic, I thought was first class. You never attacked him personally and talked about it being your opinion about wine; which is exactly what Wine TV is all about. For each of us NOT to listen to so called experts, but trust in our own palette. Thanks Gary.

  • Hey Gary
Nice episode today, sorry the wines weren’t bringing the thunder. Can I make one suggestion….when you do an episode like this it would be cool if you mentioned what the year was like in that particular region, i.e. hot and dry or rainy and cool…of course we can go look it up if we don’t already know, just a suggestion.

QOTD: This isn’t the past 2 weeks but in the past year, Opus One 2002. WHEW What a let down. I didn’t even buy the bottle, we just went to a tasting at the winery, don’t get me wrong, it was good, and the place was beautiful, but 25 BONES to taste the stuff…i was expecting GOLD.

Have a great time in Hungary.
