Too bad about the wines this time around. . . . . !

Have had the Casa in the past and sometimes it ROCKS, and sometimes it blows, so i somewhat agree with you on that review. And yes, it’s really Bordeaux like in style no question about it!

Great episode…bummer we really didn’t seem to get a sense of how the terroir made these wines different. Seemed to be more of just a straight critique of the wine as opposed to “this tastes like chilean because…”
Love to see this done with other grapes as well!
Pinots from 4 different spots? Maybe blind?

Mind bogglingly stupid email Gary had to entertain.
    Wow.

Really shows an amazing lack of respect and appreciation for what Gary is doing for us….for FREE.
Putting himself out there giving reviews that could actually hurt his business as a wine seller all in the spirit of giving his 100% honest opinion…regardless of what’s a best seller at his store or what would make a “great” show.
    That’s integrity.

    I appreciate it Gary.
    Keep on keepin on.

Great ep Gary – sorry about the Isole e Olena, I’m a fan of their wines, esp. the Cepparello.

QOTD: Had a bottle of Okanagan Pinot Noir recently – was good but basic and one dimensional – I had built up my expectations a bit so probably my fault.

You ought to start wearing a cup when you do these buddy, the family jewels are semi-precious stones.

Apart from my usual forced, lame attempts at humor and self-deluded idea of wit I just want to say thank you. Thank you for the knowledge, for the diversion, for the honesty, and the entertainment (and the sweatbands).

You’re such a natural you make it seem easy and sometimes I think I forget all that you put into this. Time, although precious, is but one aspect, this is a soulful endeavor and it is much appreciated if seldom mentioned by this Vayniac. One could not ask more of an individual than to put their heart and soul into sharing their passion so others may derive the same thing they do.

QOTD: Well it’s hasn’t been released yet but from the previews of “Underdog” will be like the moment I learned that Santa Claus wasn’t real (Uh oh, I should’ve prefaced this with a spoiler alert). The dignity/pompousity of my boyhood hero relegated to a kids dog flick, they didn’t tackle this with the seriousness and respect it deserves and someone is going to pay!!!!!!!!!!

Enjoyed the show. I’m new here, just found the site a couple of weeks ago and have watched a show or 2 everyday.
QOTD: A buddy came into town raving about Molly Dooker 2005. We cracked the 2006 M.D. Boxer while watching the fireworks on July 4. We both looked at each other and frowned. He left me the rest of the, thereafter, untouched bottle(we opened something else to “let it tone down”). I tried it the next day and poured it down the drain. First wine I had ever tasted which could only be described as “hot,” with no redeeming qualities after the first taste on the tongue, which was ok at best. The 1975 M.D. 20-20 was better, at least it had some sweet which stayed on the tongue.

    Gary,

Stick to your guns. If you worried about distributor allocations there would be no point for any of us to be watching you. P.S. I feel vindicated about the Isole e Olena, because I have also found it to be overrated in the past. We appreciate your honesty.

Let the rest of us know when your MollyDooker alloc is cutoff. Some of us need more – lol. Ok, joke aside. I appreciate you pointed out that not everyone share the same set of taste buds. That person needs to understand that we have God to thankful for our differences and how we subjectively express our experience.

    Keep on chucking, Gary!

  • Gary you must be in a bad mood from that letter. Don’t you know that no bad wines come from Howell Mountian fruit? 🙂

QOTD: The 2001 Sky Mt Veeder Zin with the cough syrup nose.

nice idea for an episode. would love to see more like it. have a great trip to Hungary. i had a great time in Budapest several years ago. if you get the chance to try Craftsmen, a wine made with the grape Cserszegi Fuszeres, i would be interested to know what you think. i just recently had one and the finish was very intriguing. started like a viognier and ended like an alsatian riesling. kinda cool.

thanks for taping ahead of time and cheers!

QOTD: Very timely question for mw. Sue and I just saw Spring Awakening last Wed. The show won all those Tonys and we went with friends who thought it was the second coming. Well, it was different for your run-of-the-mill musical, which I think confused a lot of critics, but it still wasn’t that good. Characters were drawn with such a broad stroke that they came off as stereotypical; there was next to no development of the characters as well. The music, albeit beautiful and unlike typical Broadway musicals, grew stagnant. The acting, while extremely energetic, was again, broad and almost cartoon-like. I give the show an 85 and at over $100 per ticket gets a big pazzzzzzzzz.

    Gary,

Nice idea for a tasting. Too bad the wines were a disappointment. I think it would have been a lot more intriguing had you tasted them blind (put them in bags and numbered them 1-4). You could still express your impressions as you taste, maybe even take a stab at their place of origin and then score them. This could be a great teaching moment too. You could talk about the different climates, soils, and winemaking techniques typically employed in the different regions and describe the characteristics you would look for from each area. It wouldn’t need to be double blind, that way you could still do your homework on the wines before the show. After tasting, you could then unwrap each one, highlighting a few of your previous tasting comments and elaborating on the producers and other critics’ scores as you go. It would be a lot of fun. Why not give it a try!

    Gary,

I’ve been watching WLTV for the past few months, and for the most part I have really enjoyed it. However, today’s show proved slightly misleading: a show which touted itself as educational did nothing to discuss the discretionary or non-discretionary use of oak in the wines, the whole premise of the show. How did the french oak affect the wines? Secondly, I’d love to see you taste the wines blind. And wines you’ve already tasted on WLTV. Your descriptions are once quintessentially zaney and compleltely enjoyable–paint, plastic bats and lime, jock strap, etc. I’d like to see you smell those smells again…blind. What do you say?

Great Show. Screw the idiot who doesn’t understand the concept of reviewing. After all, if everyone followed reviews slavishly “Tarzan” on broadway wouldn’t have run for more than a year and “Rent” would be mercifully dead by now. So it goes.

I would love to see some double blind tastings. Have a great time in Hungary.

QOTD: “Teatro de Ciertos Habitantes” and also “De Monstrous y Prodigios” at Lincoln Center Festival last week. El crapo!

Thanks as always Gary. I love you man! I appreciate all the hard work that you, and all the folks at WL put into the show and treating visitors with respect.

I loved the websites. My wife kept looking over as I typed one URL after another. Great work.

    Keep it going!!!

QOTD : Clos Des Papes Chateauneuf de pape 2004. The wine that I had yesterday.
96 point from wine spectator and ranked #11 of their top 100 wine 2006.
    Was it good wine? Yes.
96 point? No way. Maybe 92+
$80 price worth? Hell no! I’ll buy if it cost about $40 or less.
Over-all, it was big pazzzzzz!! Extremly overated wine.

“You probably tried it but they make a digestive/liquor thing in Hungary called Unicum. Itâ??s ermâ?¦ worth a try.”

I tried this a week or two ago when we found a bottle while cleaning our office (my office is 4 people and we have a liquor cabinet). I found the finish to be so long that I’m not sure if it went away or if i just got used to it.

Great idea for an episode, and this is actually something that I’ve been trying to do for myself, though haven’t been entirely successful, because when I go to the wine shop, even if I plan on buying specific things, I tend to get distracted. And your not the only one who missed it with the wine picks tonight. I watched the episode with a Langhe Nebbiolo that really let me down, and I love nebbiolo so much that I even give it a lot of slack when judging it.

QOTD: I think the biggest letdown in the past few weeks is that I’ve been working so much that I haven’t even had time to go see a movie, show, etc.
