Lobster – it’s good, but what really rocks is Stone Crab Claws!!! They are at the very top of the food chain for me. Have you had them Gary? And as of yesterday – yes – it is Stone Crab season here in Florida (Oct 15 – May 15). Living in the Tampa Bay area, Stone Crabs are where it’s at…. Wondering about some different wine pairings for them – will have to try the Gewurzt.

But have to give a shout out to our Tampa Bay Bucs AND especially the USF Bulls!!! Didn’t have football when I went to USF, but they are hot right now. Let’s go get Rutgers!

    GO BULLS!

    QOTD: YES!!!

Shaved ice dessert + sweet beans: It could have been halo-halo if your friend was Filipino.

  • Joe Discher

No I do not think lobster is great. Who eats it without butter. Do agree on the crabs, love them. Did a quick check again and none of these wines are available in the cradle of liberty, Pennsylvania.

Lobster rocks! So does Gewurtz. Gary, you did seem a little out of it today. But you’re still my favorite wine guy! I’ll be trying the Nuemeyer soon. And Mott….here’s a video so you can hone up on your hand puppet skills – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KW-3KwXpkkM

    Happy Trails…..

Regarding the Neumeyer, you know it’s going to be good when Gary’s brow furrows.
    QOTD: Oh, yeah!

  • QOTD: Yeah, I like lobster. Though I didn’t until about 3 years ago.
    I’m from MAINE too.
Imagine me passing up lobster for hamburgers at every lobster bake we ever had. 🙂
BUT NOW… I like it pretty well!!

QOTD: Of course lobster is good…

Your shaved ice and beans?… tons of variations on this dessert but http://www.sushiandtofu.com/sushi_and_tofu/food_sweetToBeat_0308.htm
look for “kintoki” or do a google for “kintoki ice”

That is the japanese version but there are tons of different Pacific Rim variations on this. This is a great dessert that I highly recommend for the folks in the USA to give it a try if they can find it.

  • Thanks for the Gewurtz episode. I haven’t heard of any of these. I’ve not been thrilled with the ones I’ve tried lately. I would mostly rate low to mid 80pts. Looking forward to the Bruderthal.

QOTD: Yes I love lobster. I was invited to Thanksgiving at a friends house a few years ago. The main dish was going to be Lobster Pie. So I went to my local wine merchant and asked what would pair well with Lobster Pie. One of the suggestions was Gewurztraminer.I never heard of it before. They mentioned the spiciness notes, so I was sold. I picked the middle priced Alsatian, $19.99. It was spectacular, and is the reason why I’ve been tasting them ever since. Unfortunately I don’t remember what label it was right now. I have to check my storage place, I think I saved the bottle for posterity. If I find it, I will post it on Cork’d.

QOTD: I’lm not sure if I like lobster or clarified butter more. Anyway, I haven’t had it in years. There’s always some fish special that entices me away. I’ll have to try it with Gewurtztraminer if it’s offered on the wine list. Many wine lists don’t venture into Alsace.

QOTD: Lobster may be my favorite food. I have memories of my dad taking me to Lundy’s in Sheepshead Bay, Brooklyn for lobster when I was no more than five years old. I was a very picky eater when I was a kid and wouldn’t even eat spaghetti, but put a lobster in front of me and it was history.

Gary. Nice on the Gewurzt’ episode, a wine that shows everyone you can still drink wine with asian food. And thanks for mentioning the fact that it is an Italian grape. Italian grapes get so little play compaired to their French counterparts. Also, Dr Franks may be a bit pricey, but its still one of the best from the east coast. I will be checking out NC wines next weekend to see if they have what it takes down south, but Dr Frank was always one of my favs from the finger lakes. Add Finger Lake wines to your to-taste list.

As A Certified Sommelier….I know Gary Wine Snob…not really….I use descriptors like you when dealing with customers like Milk Duds, Cotton Canday, Diet Cola, Blueberry Pie, Twizzlers etc. The one thing I wanted to metion that when it comes to Gewurtz, On a BLIND TASTING TEST…. Every single one I have ever Sniffy Sniffed….Rose Petals always is my definitive aroma that I can pick up that tells me it’s Gewurtz 100% of the time and I was wondering why you didn’t mention that? Besides the Nuts, Apricots, Yellow Apples…That perfume my first girlfriend used to wear back in High School JONTUE….wich smelled like Roses is the first scent that jumps out of the glass. In my Wine Retail Shop, when I am sampling a Gewurtz and I see a pretty girl coming towards me for a sample…I always swirl the glass really hard…put it by her nose and say Happy Early Valentine’s Day and the Customer always says…wow that does smell like a Dozen Roses!!

QOTD: Nope… Not a sea food fan. Never have been. And I try it about once a year to see if my tastes have changed. I think they are getting worse.

Shaved ice and sweet red beans…. You can probably get Korean variation of this dessert at most Korean bakeries and cafes if you’re ever in Bergenfield in north Jersey. Palisades Park would be the best bet. We call it Bingsu, and it’s not really too different from the Japanese or Taiwanese versions of it introduced already.

It’s been pretty long since I’ve had lobster though. Maybe I should treat myself this week?
