QOTD? NC Wines? Where to start … as an EAST CAROLINA Pirate, I hate all things baby blue! But for some reason I like Roy Williams. Go figure. I have not sampled any NC wines other than the gift bottles from my down the street neighbor who bottles what must be reject plonk juice and sells it at … you guessed it … ridiculous prices! I just don’t want to go there right now.

I must agree that shaving the official Jets stubble is a sign of inner weakness. Disappointing.

Any NC-related wrestling reference is just empty without Ric Flair and Dusty Rhoads, sorry. To be the man, Gary, you’ve got to beat the man!!

Lets hear it for David Garrard, Jeff Blake, Robert Jones, Terry Long, Ernest Byner, and the precious few others who wore the Purple & Gold and made it to play on Sundays!! Go Pirates!!

I’m not sure wine is going to make it in NC … maybe they’ll prove me wrong.

According to my nifty calculator, at age 44.8years old, consuming an average 3 bottles a week, and with a life expectancy of 76.8 years…. that leaves me 5006 bottles yet to drink in my lifetime… WHY IN THE HELL WOULD I EVER DRINK A NORTH CAROLINA WINE???!!! I’VE ALREADY HAD A COUPLE WISCONSIN WINES,,, AND THEY WERE TWO TOO MANY!!!

But thanks for tasting for us…. I’ll keep watching, I know you’ll get out of the phase sooner or later… 🙂

No desire to have a NC wine, but its awesome you are reviewing them for us. Who knows, you might find a hidden gem this week that we would have never known about otherwise. Keep it up!

Man Gary, glad to see you doing the NC wines. There are some great things coming out of the Swan Creek appellation in the Yadkin Valley (I was just out at Raffaldini, which was as good as the last time, and Laurel Gray this past weekend, which surprised me). I’ve heard RayLen is a strong showing. If you have a chance, you should try them again. These are places that – pardon my snobbery – are making real wine in NC. Most others excel just at sweet stuff.

You picked the two most well known perhaps, but in my opinion hardly the best NC has to offer.

Whatever happened Gary not shaving until the Jets won!?!

QOTD: Eric needs to Pony Up and be a better sidekick. Does the dude even drink the libation? I recall the beer episode where he said, “I would be sick”. Eric, it’s time to take the tampon out and grow some balls.

I thought I would have mad an appearance today but I didn’t. Argggg. Gary, We appreciate the honesty. I have had many poorly made wines from various states that pretend to be good wines with lots of awards that just don’t compare to even the cheap wines from CA. Nice job Childress so sorry RagApple.

  • QOTD: Life’s too short to hate.

Re: NC Wines — BEST thing to do if you’re not from there & are a traveler is to visit the Wine Bar off the Charlotte airport’s walkway between C concourse & D/E concourse. $4 gets you 4 tastes of wines of your choosing (and the taste is a fair size, too). The bonus is that is most cases you don’t WANT any more than the taste you get.

Best of the 8 I had was a Westbend Viognier that I actually paid $15 for the bottle of. Worst of the lot (and possibly the worst wine I’ve ever had) was a Westbend Chambourcin. The whites were mostly harsh and off balance and the reds were tannic, thin, and almost totally lacking in any new world OR old world characteristics that one tends to associate with wine.

I didn’t have any of the Ragapple wine, but most of what I had was spot on for Gary’s commentary on both the white & the red for Ragapple. Save yourself the money of buying a bottle and stop by at the airport. At the very least it’s a good QPR buzz before a flight.

I don’t hate anybody. It’s too much work.

Is there anywhere I wouldn’t try a Cab Franc from? I don’t think so.

Good to see some North Carolina exposure. I must confess that I’ve never tried any of the local offerings so you got me beat there. Will have to check out the Childress, just saw a display at Costco for them.

Gary, I’m with you on hating MJ. As a Wolfpack fan, I’m obligated. And this weekend my beloved ‘Pack will rip those Tarheels a new one!

We’re the Red and White from State
And we know we are the best.
    A hand behind our back,
We can take on all the rest.
    Go to hell, Carolina!
Devils and Deacs stand in line.
The Red and White from NC State.
    Go STATE!!
