North Carolina – I so expected a Dale Earnhart signature #3 red, or a turn left white.

Woah Gary, what’s up with the “nice package” reference for the RagApple, I thought we weren’t suppose to be seduced by marketing?

I believe all of Childress’s grapes come from Lexington, NC. My in-laws use to live in Lexington, NC and we visted the winery when it first opened. Pretty remarkable winery. Great place to have wedding receptions and the like. As a matter of fact, I got married in Lexington and had Childress’s place been built at that time, my reception would have been there.

I have found NC wineries to be interesting. They usually have to have a house blend that is extremely sweet in order to satisfy the local market. Being from NC myself, I know that the local NC market is hooked on mountain dew, and are looking for that sweetness in their wines.

The other bottlings of these NC wineries tend to be a little more interesting, and where I think they really start to compete with the other wines of the world. I think they have some ways to go, but they are on their way.

Go heels! Jordan rocks, Knicks suck!

What’s up with the shave. I believe it was Washington 23, Jets 20. Hmmmm (not shaving until they win????).

Thanks for always being honest about what you experience/feel with the wines. Don’t apologize for that. I can trust you because you are so honest.

I hate Nebraska football right now! 🙁

  • No more Jets and football talk? Rubbish! Long live the Raiders, err, Jets. Win or lose. And you can cry on my shoulder and I’ll cry on yours.

Don’t feel bad for bashing on the wines, they are what they are. I’ve lived in NC my entire life and have yet to found a native wine that I really like. Some are drinkable, but that’s about as good as it gets. Keep up the good work.

Not the wineries I would have picked to represent NC, but not a bad showing (and yes, these wines will be over priced, but some are good). To answer one question posted (where would we even buy NC wines), unless you live here or drive through, buy by mail. It’s a crap shoot (I am slowly doing it with PA wines, and I’ve had some really nice wines, and I’ve had crap) but it can be fun!

Some sites for NC wines in general:

    GV,
Nice episode. I have been to Childress vineyards, and it is very impressive. He has created a beautiful Tuscan styled villa with a nice Bistro. I think his wines are okay, but I agree that they have lots of potential. I can see them getting better over the next few years, and becoming good quality. I went with my wife on a weekday, and the place was packed. Lots of NASCAR types running around the place, so maybe he is also changing the wine landscape a bit.

Hey, when are you coming down to NC for a Vayniac Party!!!!!

    JWB

PS: Kahuna, most of his grapes are from his vineyards. They have used Muscadet roots and grafted Cabernet, Chardonnay and I think Viognier, maybe Riesling. He does buy some grapes from California, if I remember the tour guide correctly. They hope to have 100% NC grapes in the next few years. Unfortunately, we had a freeze in April, and they lost 50% of their Chardonnay.

  • !!Gary You Suck!!

What happen to “… I’m not gonna shave until the Jets win…”? You would have stood a better chance saying “I’m not gonna shave until the Pats lose!”.

Do you think they can stand a chance against Miami on Dec 2?

Ah man, the beard was just coming into its own. Nice to see wines from “non-wine” areas. Very interesting.

Great job Gary. Rey-Len is a great producer from NC. I am excited to see what is in store for the American Wine Landscape on WLTV.

QOTD: because he didn’t say it loud enough for everybody to hear.

N.C. wines, interesting, wonder if they deal with boytritis from all the humidity there?
    QOTD: I hate G.W.

So glad you featured the Childress wines! As a huge NASCAR fan I’ve been wondering how they would measure up. Several others in the NASCAR community have gotten into the wine game, including Jeff Gordon and Larry McReynolds. Their interest started several years ago on trips to Sonoma, CA for the races at Infineon Raceway. NASCAR and wine…who’d a thunk it?
