Qotd: Antrim's 1844, over 2,300 selections and I'm surprised at how low their mark ups are for a restaurant

  • The Riverdale Garden in Riverdale, Bronx. 1-Because they have a selection very well picked by its owner, Michael, including wines from Jenny and Francois, importers of excellent French, ‘natural’, small-produced wines. His food is top notch, excellently crafted, especially game and meats–nice space with a garden and deck out back. 2-Because they (at least used to) have a BYOB night, rare in Manhattan for this quality of food.

…and oh yeah. Great show! Great idea! We need more of these “Gary on the road” shows. Love it!

QOTD: Kilauea Lodge Restaurant, Volcano, Hawai’i.
The food’s nothing special. But the wine list is extensive (especially for the middle of nowhere!) and there is about a $5-$10 markup on the bottles. That’s it!! It’s wonderful. Very nice people, too.

Gary, thank you for the show. I was able to take clients out tonight to a French restaurant, and for the first time, not be intimidated by the choices… had a 2002 Domaine Nizas Cotes Du Languedoc, excellent QPR because you said excellent values were to be had from the south of Fance. It was funny to overhear someone of much senior age remark, “they have great Bordeaux, from France.” Duh… we are at a French restaurant, with an all French wine menu.

    QOTD:
For fellow Vancouverites (Canada) – Fiddlehead Joe’s Eatery (http://www.fiddleheadjoeseatery.com/), on the seawall below the Burrard Street Bridge. In the winter, a cozy spot to look at the harbour lights and watch the sea taxi putter past. In the summer, a great spot to watch the sunset at 10:00 while enjoying a bottle to the background of sailing tackle chiming in the breeze.

    or

Burrowing Owl Estate Winery, Sonora Room, Okanagan Valley, BC (http://www.bovwine.ca/therestaurant.htm) – 8:00 reservations on the West balcony to watch the sun dive below the mountain laced horizon as the mission bell welcomes more guests.

EPISODE 367 qotd: Best steak was at my apartment back in the 70’s. A Filet you could cut with a fork.

Worst was at a restaurant in New Orleans for lunch, and the steaks were rotten. Didn’t realize it until I bit into it.

Hope this is not too late. Out of town for a few days.

QOTD: Sir Francis Drake Hotel Restaurant in San Fran. All the waiter/resses take weekly or biweekly wine tasting classes and the staff are not at all pretentious. I’ve only been there once but had a wonderful experience.

    Great Show!!!

QOTD: Cova in Houston, TX. Dont really know if it is considered as a true restaurant as it is more of a wine and tapas bar…but none the less, my favorite place to go for a glass of wine in a semi-restaurant environment.

There was a good flow in this installment of WLTV and its nice to see you changing the wine world at nice NYC restaurants. You are so lucky to be able to choose from so many fine establishments. The rule for the price of a glass is one half the price of the cost of the bottle. So if the bottle is $20 then the glass should be $10. This works as long as the bottle is consumed or three glasses at least are served. These are general guidelines and are at the whim of the proprietor. It did not make sense to me that these wines were chosen as aperitifs. If these were meant as a preview to what you could pair with the seafood menu then I might agree. The traditional pairing with fish is a high acidity wine because it cut the fish oils cleanly and enhances the flavor. Pinot Noir from Oregon is a natural pairing with wild salmon. I was surprised to see Nebbiolo as a fish wine but I could drink a good Barolo by itself or with chocolate or Parmesan cheese or just some good bread…..We used to serve a Dover Sole au Chambertin as a special which had the delicate meat of the flounder tinged purple from the Pinot Noir sauce. Coq au Vin is a chicken in red wine production. Some chefs will drink their favorite Bordeaux with everthing so again it’s your call and rules are meant to be broken. With fish I still like Meursault…

QOTD There is a little tapas restaurant in Frederick, MD called Isabellas that will pour just about anything on their list by the glass and you can graze on the tapas until you are satiated…
Thanks for listing one of my all time favorite wines Muga as the wine of the year.

Jesus wine by the glass prices (in NYC, especially) are such a ripoff. Honestly, Id rather share a bottle at home with friends for the same price as a glass at a place like that….

QOTD: Cave Du Vin in Clevleand, OH

  • ERP

QOTD: Enoteca (In Shanghai) they import their own wine allowing them to have good wines for less.

    I’m enjoying the field trips.

What do you mean you can’t serve wine by the glass? Don’t you throw down with tastings at Wine Library?

In any case, QOTD: This is a tough one, because I enjoy tasting wine at home with friends, but in terms of dining out, I enjoy a place in Breckenridge, CO that features wine as an event, and works in appetizers around the wine. It’s called The Cellar (go figure…).

QOTD: I actually don’t have a favorite yet because restaurant markup didn’t really fit into my budget until a few months ago.

  • Hey Gary,

It was nice meeting you today. Thanks again for taking the time…!!!

    Love the show concept.

My favorite restaurant for wine is The Park & Orchard in Rutherford NJ. The wine list is like (2) WS magazines put together. Tasting or wine bar wise I like Vino Vino down town NYC.

  • QOTD: Strawberry Street Cafe in Richmond, VA. They have very affordable wine flights – they usually have two different kinds with three wines each. One will typically be a Virginia wine flight, and the other will feature some other theme. Quite good.

Very enjoyable episode! And great post-episode!!

QOTD: Actually, let me turn the question around; restaurant not to go to. My daughter and son-in-law in Vancouver only have wine in a restaurant on their anniversary, and always at The Keg. But this year they were hit by sticker shock when the house red went from $5.50 to $8 a glass. Of course, they have no idea what the wine was.

In the Okanagan, our favourite is The Minstrel Cafe, with great and varied menus and reasonably priced wine. Looking forward to an occasion to visit La Bussola for a nice risotto and a half-bottle of Amorone that I wouldn’t otherwise get to taste.

Interesting episode and an excellent idea for the wines that they serve. The ending .., soooooo funny.

QOTD – Mancini in Limassol, Cyprus – it did lovely food and had an excellent wine selection. The best part was that the owner knew what wine you should have with your meal and that helped a lot.

Today’s episode was another perfect gem, I like the idea of hitting the road and really get a well rounded idea of what the restaurants are going to offer the customer. I can not wait to see the next episodes while you are out on the town.

These WLTV field trips are great. It’s always nice to see the world beyond our Springfield classroom. Keep ’em coming.

QOTD: used to be Montrachet before they shut it down. Now it’s a toss up between Veritas and Cru for their wonderful lists, although Tribeca Grill’s Monday BYO, a copy of its sibling’s tradition (Montrachet), is starting to look like one of the favorite destinations. Outside of NYC, definitely La Beaugraviere in Mondragon (Southern Rhone) for the best Rhone list in the world.
