Qotd: Antrim's 1844, over 2,300 selections and I'm surprised at how low their mark ups are for a restaurant

Nice idea for the show, and the video at the end was quite funny as well.

QOTD: If I’m expense accounting, 529 Wellington here in Winnipeg has a really deep list. But for more day-to-day drinking at a restaurant, I like the Palm Room at the Hotel Fort Garry – a great combination of standards, some off-the-beaten-track stuff, great service and a jazz trio on weekends, all in an early 20th-century historic landmark.

Good episode. It’s always hard for me to buy wine at a restaurant because I’m so in tune with retail prices, but I’m slowly breaking down.

  • QOTD: Actually not a one. I’d rather to drink at home. If there has to be one, I think Peter’s once again. One of the the best family resuraunts in Beijing, my most frequent visited one, better for kids, nice for friends, good for lovers, but not really for wine.

BTW, the ending…that is what Gary always does, isn’t it? And now Gary turns into the audience role to enjoy some stupid action of his own. That is fun.:P

Great Show: Totally agree with Andre Mac’s take on ‘wine by the glass’ trends. Remember when $4 for a cup of coffee seemed outrageous ? Getting a $15-$25 glass once in a while is a great way to taste the quality of some higher end wines.

  • Great episode GV, keep these coming. Just a note, Andre needed his own lapel mic so we could hear what he was saying.

QOTD: Check out http://www.briccoseattle.com, a great wine bar at the top of Queen Anne Hill in Seattle. They are doing a bang-up job featuring a ton of wines by the glass focusing heavily on Italian producers which give you a chance to try wines you wouldn’t otherwise ever taste.
    Good stuff for sure !!

Yea, I really liked this episode. I got interested in the whole wine scene when I started to work at a restaurant (3 months ago) so I really enjoy seeing/hearing the thought process behind the different wine selections/programs people have come up with.

QoTD: Before I started working in a restaurant (and my subsequent plunge into the wine world) I wouldn’t ever order wine by the glass because I knew little of it, and what I did know was cheap, blah wine. And now that I’ve learned enough to be able to navigate through a wine list/make selections I’d enjoy, I don’t have the free time to actually go to a restaurant and be on the other side of the table. Some night in January I’ll be sure to go and treat myself to some fine wine and food.

  • Looking forward to the rest of the week.

QOTD – There is a little bistro in Redmond WA called Pomegranate that is a great place to drink wine. They don’t have much of a by the glass selection, but the markup for bottles seems to be about $5-10 over retail. Best prices I have seen on a wine list prety much anywhere. Plus, the food is spectacular.

  • lol, that guy at the end had me! I was thinking… “what an idiot… he’s talking about how expensive this wine is, and he pours the whole damn thing in the glass to ‘rinse’ it!”. Nice work man.

Hey Gary, there’s this great wine here in Oregon from a Vinyard on the Columbia Gorge that is great. They don’t sell it outside of Oregon and Washington because it isn’t a huge batch. Anyhow, I’ll have to see if I can get some and send you a bottle to review.

    Cheers,

    Trevor

After 368 episodes you still keep the show fresh! THanks.
QOTD: I usually bring my own bottle, but I would have to sadly name a chain and say Flemings steakhouse. 100 wines by the glass including some sparkling wines and the full wine list is available online, which I really wish more places offered.

Well, I didn’t really get into wine until I had moved overseas, so I don’t know many American restaurants where I’d like to drink wine. Plus, I’m from small-town Oklahoma so I don’t think there are many in my neighborhood. However, I do know Mercy Wine Bar in Dallas is kind of cool. They’ve got a neat ambiance, wine available by flights for tasting, and pastas and nibbling-type food. I had a nice time there. But there was also a wine bar/restaurant in Paris I love called Le Vin Qui Danse, where I sampled a lot of good French wines by the glass and had some awesome tuna and salmon tartare.
