  • I LOVE TO hit the road on my bike, not motorcycle, or hit the trail on my mtn bike and I LOVE to taste wine, examine it, play with it – I am totally hooked on the experience. Plus I just love anything outdoors, rockclimbing, hiking, skiing, all that shiz is for me!!

    Gary,
I just scanned the comments to this episode and they are overwhelmingly pleading for you not to end winelibraryTV at 400. I must say I went to bed last night hoping you weren’t serious but this morning I truly woke up with sinking feeling of sadness that the show would be ending. I must ask, please, please, please, keep going. If the daily shows are too much, why not go to a weekly schedule? Think about it man. You’ve really done a lot for the wine world, but must more needs to get done and you’re the man to do it.

Only seven shows left? What now? Nothing else matters. I am never drinking wine again.

On the other end of the price spectrum, I thought this about the 2005 Las Rocas de San Alejandro Catalunya. Much better the next day. Letting it open let it get a little funk!

Only 7 more episodes? Yet he mentioned that something is brewing with the Apple TV…. Could there be a big format change coming?

I hope you don’t leave, Gary, but wish you well with whatever you decide to do.

  • NathanN

    Cool show and cool experiment!

QOTD: Fly fish, drink & talk about wine, work, hiking, and do all of it with family.

  • Hi Gary!

I just tried a Ribera del Duero at the local store tasting… and had an epiphany! I’ve tasted on-point lychees in gewurz, grapefruit in sauv blanc, and burning rubber in a chilean cab. However these are all single aromas/flavors. Last night at the tasting, I had a wine that had a complex flavor profile that was exactly… I mean EXACTLY like BBQ ribs! To me it had all the individual elements. I couldn’t figure out what was going on with the nose, and then all at once it came together:

2003 Bodegas y Viñedos Valderiz Ribera del Duero (Spain, Castilla y León, Ribera del Duero)

NOSE: Exactly, I mean EXACTLY like barbecue ribs – smokiness, some caramelized sweetness, a little savory, slight cherry, a little meat, slight vinegar, maybe a little mesquite. Crazy!

PALATE: Some sugar, but with good tannic grip to balance it. Really falls apart on the midpalate. Quite hollow – I get nothing except generic “wine” smells. Very surprising considering the deep, interesting nose. 100% Tempranillo, $30

QOTD: sounds cornball, but I love helping people, especially vets, making sure they know all their benefits and rights etc. If I can make them laugh in the process that’s a bonus. I also love anything to do with football (soccer) and hope to be reffing kids matches when I am arthritic and bent over. And if you leave in 7 shows, prepare for some protests, pretty boy.

QOTD: Share good food (& wine, of course) and good times w/my hubby & sons, family & friends. Riding my horses, teaching riding, puttering in the gardens, any time spent outdoors, helping anyone I can…

Gary! “Seven more shows, all time”?!
At last I’m actually learning something about wine because it’s fun and I can pay attention because I’m not busy feeling ignorant, and you’re leaving us?!? I have no problem with fewer shows and us being fit in around your life instead of the other way around, but no more WLTV?
Don’t you make me have to come down there and set you straight, young man! ; )

  • W Miree

Wow! You hit a bunch of nails right on the head! Everbody’s taste preferences fall “some place” along a very long preference continuum, and continually changes throughout their life. It is most unlikely that any one person would be at the same place in the continuum as another person who is recommending a particular wine….it could be close or miles away. If your place along the coninuum is substantially away from the person making the recommendation, you are probably in for a major disappointment, even if the recommender is Parker, Spectator, or GV. A high score on a wine does not guarantee that you will like a wine. It only means that if you do happen to like that kind of wine, the odds are improved that you will like the specific recommendation. Therefore, it is very good advice for people to taste the wine themselves before buying, especially if they are inclined to buy a bunch of it. And even if they have tasted it and like it, they need to be aware that their own taste preferences will most likely be changing over the future years.

It is unfortunately, but true, that buying and collecting wine is a “trial and Error” process at best. The good news is that you do tend to get better at it after a number of years of experience and lots of tasting; for instance you begin to recognize that certain advisors tend to match up with your own palate better than others. Use them more often, but still taste.

Great show! Can’t wait to see the next one to see how the wines developed over 24 hours.
