I am very excited to try these bad boys. This morning I ordered two bottles of the 2005 Chateau Les Secrets De Cardinale (one to drink one to keep) and a bottle of 2005 Chateau Luchey Halde Blanc. This is going to turn into an expensive little hobby if I’m not careful 🙂

Prediction to all Vayniacs…..Buy all the 2005 Oregon Pinots you can Find but especially invest in 2005 Washington State Futures…Classic, Classic Vintage in Walla Walla and Columbia Valley… Be Patriotic …This is a real buying opportunity in the Pacific Northwest for that vintage

have been drinking a lot of the cheeper VDP 2005 that are available here in Japan.

Right, Japan, the country that never gets the shout outs. It’s like I’m the only flippin’ Vayniace in Japan. I even think you gave a shout out to Kenya or some country. What do we have to do over here? Have you tried the crap that comes out of Japan and just written us off as the country that consumes Nouveau before anyone else and that’s it? Or the country that you have pledged to visit but failed to do so?

I must say this was an awesome episode, as are most. But give shout outs to the little guys, those who don’t have birthdays, those who commented for the first time, a “Big shout out to 998-foxrespect_caw_caw” can go much longer than you thinks.

I’ve never been a big fan of bordeaux’s predominantly because of their price and I’m not a big cab/merlot drinker, but I’ll have to try some.

I had no Bordeaux 2005 but will do soon.

Question of the day: Have you tasted any Romanian wines?

sheepishly, I have to admit to having purchased about 35 cases of 2005 Bordeaux futures. It’s Gary’s fault. Or, in 20 years, I’ll have Gary to thank.

  • 2005 BDX story? Same story as 2004 in Spain – anything 04 from anywhere in Spain was super. Hard to go wrong with almost anything from France in 2005.

Have been drinking a bunch of 05 Domaine Lafage Cote Sud for about 9 bones. Hard to beat.

  • Working at a wine store is tough with this great 2005 vintage! I could blow my whole paycheck on some great under $30 bottles, but I’m trying to be good. I have had a bunch of under $20 bottles of Bordeaux, the problem is I can’t lay any down…They all end up empty.

QOTD #1 – Home is Adelaide in Australia but I now live and watch from London.

QOTD #2 – I dont have any. I’ve always assumed that yound Bordeaux will be undrinkable and would need years in the cellar. I don’t have a cellar so I’ve always avoided them. Time for a change of plan perhaps?

Hello from Windsor, Ontario! I sadly don’t have a 2005 Bordeaux. I got my first Bordeaux (ever) this year, and it’s a 2003. My parent’s got it for me for Christmas. I plan on opening it up on the Christmas of 2008 to enjoy with them. I’m pretty excited!

    Hey Gary-
    Great EP.
    QotD-
I’ve purchased a few bottles of 2005 bordeaux (mostly from Margaux), but need to find may way over to putting out for a Paulliac, Pomerol, St. Emilion, and Graves. Besides cash, the reason I’m waiting it because I want to see the feedback from the ageability of a few of the wines my store carries (unfortunately, my store doesn’t bring in reps to taste us on the products). However, so far, I’m in for about 4 or 5 bottles!

  • QOTD #1: Non-US? Yep, daily lurker from Germany 😉
QOTD #2: 2005? This vintage was great for bordeaux, no question. But also in other regions like the Rhone. We noticed a huge quality-boost there if you compare 04 to 05.

  • Bernie Bearnaise

This was another informative episode full of speculative fever! Since I adore Bordeaux as a region it shows the New World what is possible in special years like ’61 or ’66 and ’05. I read an article in Slate last week that was a rhapsody about a bottle of ’47 Cheval Blanc. It would be a good idea to explain the different classes of Bordeaux because there is Petrus at $2000 a bottle and Christian Mouieux at $10 a bottle. There is the Cabernet Sauvignon dominant left bank Medoc appellations of St. Estephe, Pauillac, St. Julien (my favorite lefty)and Margaux. South of that you have Graves(Haut Brion)and many good whites there. On the right side of the Gironde and Dordogne rivers you find the Merlot dominant Libournais and Fronsac. The most famous appellations are St. Emilion and Pomerol. There are something like 5,000 Chateaus in Bordeaux. There is a price point for everyone and a 99 point vintage should find the lesser houses or petit Chateaus at their best. For the Premier Crus the prices will be in the stratosphere but the prices drop quickly as you get to the lesser known brands. One of the services that Gary gives us is his own score regardless of what some other famous critic like Tanzer, Parker, Meadows or even Suckling might post. After all, these folks are not in the same room drinking from the same bottle. There will be some variation but a 93 from any of these knowledgable palates is an indicator of excellence and we all benefit. Gary, scores are a good thing….

It might be a good time to try a second label of a big Chateau or dabble in the Cru Bourgeois Exceptionnels like Chasse-Spleen, Ormes de Pez, Potensac, Poujeaux and Siran to name a few. Splurge for Ducru Beaucaillou or try its second label Croix de Beaucaillou. If 2005 is too pricey find a 2001 or 2004 to try as they were excellent vintages. There also exists the nearby Cotes du Blaye and Cotes du Bourg and Cotes de Castillon. If you are a fan of Argentine Malbec then why not try the original from Cahors.

That should be enough territory for 10 episodes. Don’t forget to decant!
