Great show, fanastic energy. I have had the ch. Lyonnat before and I had a feeling you would find it so austere. I bought a bottle of the 2000 to take to a drag race party in DC 3 years ago. I was proud of my little $20 purchase since it was from “great vintage”. Upon opening we couldn’t of have been more disapointed. Despite swirling like a hurricane it was like drinking waxy black mud. So I set the bottle aside and moved on to drinking some bourbon rather than attempt to choke down some kangaroo wine someone else brought.
Hours later I noticed a pretty girl pour herself a glass of the Lyonnat since she didn’t cringe or make any sour faces I asked her what she thought of the wine. to my suprise she liked it. So I tried some and confirmed that it had somehow bloomed into a pretty decent, rather sweet though still powerfully structured wine, like some Merlot Montrose.
I remember this well, despite the bourbon buzz, since it was the most extreeme example of wine development through oxidation I have ever encountered.
I wonder if Gary’s 2004 was the same or if it just stayed crap?

QOTD: I’ve got a feeling that New Zealand sparklers are few and far between values now, but will blow up soon within the next 5 years (especially with the quantity of chardonnay and quality of pinot grown there).

Wow…spooky…I opened a bottle of the 2004 Sansonnet on Sunday night because I knew I would be grilling steak and asparagus on Monday night. I completely agree with the tasting notes.

C’mon, now you make me wish I was there, and I thought about it, I almost did it, but didn’t go in the end. Decided to save the money and buy more vino. By the way I am saving two bottles of the Sansonnet to drink in a few years. Awesome stuff. Love the show.
