My latest bargain basement vino was Alianca Foral Douro Reserva. At 5 bones and a few hours in a decanter (I now decant everything) it was winner on my pallet.

ok- all my kids sniffysniff with me(none of them drink, but we all smell the wine)
qotd- geez I guess I’ll answer after seeing md&e and the little penguin in the hizzy- i think it was the estancia paso robles cabernet. not bad really.
thanks for a value show, I’d really appreciate seeing widely available wines regularly on the show(widely available ‘cuz you can;t ship to Ga.#&*&*(^&$%^Y!!)
It get a little depressing watching you taste all these wines I’ll never see in this little burg.
    thanks

QotD: Good question. I don’t generally drink under $10s, but i enjoyed the Gnarly Head Zin I had at a dinner with the family.

I have a feeling this will be a good list of comments to go grocery shopping with…

Domaine Sarrail Pech L’Estagnere 2003(Vin de Pays de la Cite de Carcassonne). $8.99/bottle. Great little wine from south of France in Carcassonne;on the south west end of the Languedoc region (bordering Spain). Cab Sav, Merlot & Cab Franc blend.

Great show today. Everyone wants to find those under $10 steals that you can drink as a daily vino. I haven’t found too many since I tend to hang in the $15-$30 range, but I don’t drink wine every day, just a few bottles a week.

QOTD: 2006 Pascual Toso Malbec that was rated the #1 best but of 2007. It really Brings The Thunder.

Yeah, the EVIL was ok, but not that great. I used the rest of the bottle in a stew.

  • QOTD: Concha y Toro’s Casillero del Diablo Carmenere – about $8 or $9 in Indiana, pretty much a staple in my “party wine” category.

qotd… ok, trying to recall. it chat. de tour peyhomme, cote du blaye. i just had 03 to 05. for 11 bucks, this does well. the 03 is super open and tasty, 04 is classic with more restrain and 05 is all tannins right now. it is actually something i will buy a few of and open them in 5 years.

  • Nick

the best 10 dollar bottle i remember having is finca vieja tempranillo from la mancha. it drinks like a $15 bottle. keesha pinot grigio from hungary is also a good value….it is full bodied and has a long finish…what pinot grigio has that… not many

Last “great” $10 wine? 2006 Barnard Griffin Cab-Merlot, a wonderful wine for $9.99. Absolute purity of red and blue fruit, wonderful acids, barely a hint of oak, and very balanced. Truly an outstanding effort. For the oak monsters out there, try the latest NV release of Townshend Cellars Table Red. A total mutt blend of cab, merlot, syrah, and who knows what…. Fairly heavily oaked, a little chocolatey on the finish, and tastes like a middle age wine but very, very tasty for $9. Don Townshend loves his oak, and I suspect this wine is some left-overs from the 2003-2004 vintages of his higher end wines. Really a rich wine for the price. There ya be!

QOTD…..Yalumba Viognier on sale $7.99 yummy!

  • Thanks for the shout out Gary!
Funny, they’re filming an episode of gossip girl tonight outside the building where I work in midtown.
QOTD: I only have the latest wristband you sent out earlier this month.
QOTD2: Di Majo Norante Sangiovese from Molise Italy for $7.99 to $9.99

  • The Lukas

You’ve done an EVIL before, and i don’t think you liked that one either.
Was nice to see an episode that focused very much on the wine in the midst of all this book hoopla.
Was also good to say hi on the new facebook IM thing this morning Gary.
Lovin’ the show, keep it up.

  • The last really good wine i had for under 10 bones was a Beaujolais Nouveau, i forget the name but it was a vintage 2006, i bought two of them for a wine tasting with my other CKC friends, let one decant for about 8 hours and the other was a pop and pour, it was awesome to see how decanting can change a wine 😀

Good show Gary, I like seeing shows with the low price points, cheaper wine allows me to drink more. QOTD- Lately I’ve had Penfolds Koonunga Hill Cab-Shiraz and Wishing Tree Shiraz ’04 are two that aren’t bad for under $10. Also, Banrock Station Riesling I got at Kroger for $4.20 was suprisingly good for my PAL.

Wondering if you’ve ever tried any Mirassou wines? I actually like the Mirassou 2006 Pinot Noir that sells for about $7 at Safeway. I’d like to hear your thoughts on it.
