Gary- I actually had the Costano last and when I first opened it, the tannins blew me away along with some of the harsher vegetal nose. But hey, it really opened up after a day and the tannins smoothed out and it was strong still but better. After 2 days it died!

Great show. These types of wines should be the focus of book #2.

Last best under $10 was Rivola Sardon de Duero. Local wine shop had it marked down so I decided to try it and it was a bargain.

I agree on the upside down LIVE. Their Boarding Pass Shiraz is much better albeit pricier.

James Toney “The Boston Strangler” wow had’t heard that name in some time.

Gary, your description of the Andreza sounds exactly like the lip gloss I wore today!!! (I know, I know…I’m such a girl…) Its giving me ideas of my own web show!!! 🙂

QOTD: I really enjoyed Terre Nero D`avola..surprised me!

  • pawncop

I enjoyed this episode a lot. I think the Tin Cellers Merlot at $7.99 was pretty good and also the Pascual Toso Malbec was pretty darn good as well.

  • Nice episode for a post-tax, perhaps-we’re-in-a-recession era. 🙂 Great for us CKCs, although I would have hoped the wines would’ve fared better.

QOTD1: I’ve had the Avelena Vinho Verdhe, but I dunno if that was 100% Loureiro.
QOTD2: No, I’ve only got the 2nd one.
QOTD3: 2005 Caldora Trebbiano at $10, 2006 Astica Torrentes at $8, 2006 Domaine des Cassagnoles (Ugni blanc) at $8, and anything from Alamos (esp. the Malbec and the Cab Sauv) certainly brought the Thunder!

    Yeah a value show!,
I’m part of the FRAWD Squad (FRugal American Wine Drinkers), so I’m always looking for good values.

QOTD A consistently good under $10 wine is Verasol Grenache. $8-8.50, good color, good fruity flavor. Beats other under $10 in at home tastings while commercials are running on the TV. (who says staying at home watching TV can’t be fun?)

A friend of mine liked the Land Of Fire Argentinian red wine, I gave him. $6. I thought it was nothing special, but he liked it.
Some of the 2 buck chucks aren’t bad.

  • THUNDER BROUGHT!
Thanks for hating the Evil and not-much-liking the Castano; both are available locally and pushed often in the stores here, yet I have no idea why anybody would like either of them! But people sometimes astonish me, so … ANYWAY, I was holding my breath as you tasted them, then blurted out “HA!” I fell like you have personally trained my palate! Darcey too! We are grateful!

QsOTD: Darcey and I both have one of the original wristbands! And you have a pic of us with them!

BEST under $10 wine I have had lately: 2003 Berane, Domaine de Cotes du Ventoux Les Agapes, which my local merchant had at closeout for $5. He claimed it was normally $16, but I think it was more like $12 regularly. At $12 I would have liked it, but at $5 it was an outright steal! I went back to buy a six-pack (that’s how they come) and I pretty much got the last one! You’d like it Gary, especially at $5, but I think you’d like it anyway!

    Keep it up!

    Be Well

  • Sean

I’m commenting and I’m not a lurker any more!

    2006 Santa Isabel Torrontes $7

  • Melissa J

Last weekend I had a cabernet that I loved for $5.99 at World Market:
2005 XS Red, a wine by Hess Group from Santa Rosa, CA. Pretty Awesome!

QOTD: Tonight I am drinking a 2006 Cono Sur Carmenere from Chile – It’s the best under $10 wine that I’ve had in a while. Good balance of fruit and tannins.

Just finished watching yesterday’s episode, Gary, but had to laugh when I saw the still from today’s episode. I still remember watching the episode last halloween because I happened to be at a winebar where the wine distributor was doing a wine tasting….and one of the wines in his line was Pure Evil….and you said it was Pure Crap. Laughed my ass off!
We need to have the whole vayniac nation do a wine tasting on a day shortly after your book comes out, sampling some of those wines. It shall be declared VD! Vayniac Day. Aren’t you glad to have VD?

Long time lurker coming out of the shadows to say that I’ve had a 100% Loureiro wine. It was Quinta do Ameal.

As for the question of the day, it’s another Portuguese wine, Quinta Do Cabriz 2005.

    Glad to see some
