QOTD: well, I’ve had a lot of great Malbecs lately for under $10 (e.g., Terrazas) and while this next one isn’t the best overall, it has the most riDONCulous QPR: Vina Antigua, from Argentina, a blend of 50% Bonarda and 50% Sangiovese, and costs me $4.99. You just cannot kick as much ass under $8 as the Vina Antigua.

QotD: I had a red blend from Cosentino called “The Red”

  • Pastafari Pirate

no, wait!!! QOTD: = Quinta Do Encontro, from Portugal. I got it (from WL) for $6, and is SOO much better than the Berco do Infante you raved about. I think it’s mostly Touriga Nacional.

Great Show! Especially considering how the prices of everything else are going up. Last great bottle under 10 bones – barely – Chateau Au Grand Paris. We’ve got more to try. Thanks!

Columbia Crest Semillon/Chardonnay 2003. Great summer wine in good ole hot Southern California. I’m somewhat embarassed to say that it only costs $2.99 at Trader Joes. Such a pleasant summer drinker though and it avoids the oh so typical Chardonnay syndrome.

Hey Gary, how about another “Mystery Pack” episode. My wife and I need another date night. Thanks.

QOTD: I don’t recall a wine that cost me less than $10 that I have tried that was any good. I have had several Cab Francs from the Loire valley that were a little over $10 that were great, especially the Saumur Reserve Des Vignerons 2005.

I’ve got one of the original black and green wrist bands. Wore it on March 29th. Had an Albarino the other day which I think was under 10 bones

  • I have one of those original wristbands! As for best under $10 wine – a tie. 2004 Bodegas Almansenas La Huella de Adaras and the 2006 Cameron Hughes Rose. Both were excellent, $8.99 and $7.99, respectively.

Nice value show GV… QOTD: One of the best sub-$10 wines I’ve ever had was the 2001 Carmenet Cabernet Sauv. Cellar Selection… Too hard to find now, but definitely a keeper. Also, the Chat Ste Michelle Grand Estate wines that roll in at $8 are great crowd favorites.

  • A bit shout out to the “Value Shows”!

QOTD: Chateau De Brondeau, 2005, Bordeaux and Pepperwood Grove Pinot Noir (only the stuff from Italy’s Provincia di Pavia) 2006 vintage I believe. You get that Italian dryness for only 5 bones!

    Thanks for the show Gary!

Gary, great show–will seek out the Andreza and Taja. I’ve had some vinho verdes in the past and enjoyed them( in styrofoam cups at the beach!) I’ve had several vintages of the Castano–all under 9 bones. Did enjoy them after a few hrs of decanting. QOTD: Best/most recent

    Well done.
QOTD: I have an original wristband, and I still know where it is.
It’s been a couple of years, but I had a Louis M. Martini cabernet that was right about $10.00 that I really liked.

    Gary,
I have a official “Vayniac” wristband. QOTD; The good stuff under 10 bones…
Columbia Crest 2-vines cab-merlot, teddy hall chennin, pillar box red, and the best was the Leocadie, which unfortunately I only purchased 2 bottles from wine library before your reccomendation, after that show they were sold out. Thanks for another value episode.

  • Two points to share here.

    1) By sheer coincidence I happened to pick up the Castano Monastrell tonight ($9 at my local Binny’s). I enjoyed it with my dinner. I got leather and capers on the nose (though I was EATING pasta with chicken and capers, so …). I felt the tannins at first, but I thought it opened up after a few minutes and became much more enjoyable. Probably could have benefited from some decanting, as you suggested.

    2) My favorite under $10 red wine lately has been the Gnarly Head Old Vine Zinfandel. I’ve had the 2005 and 2006, and enjoyed both. Usually $9, though I’ve found it for $8. In white I’ve been liking the Marques de Caceres Rioja. I got that tonight, too, for $9, but again I’m sure I’ve got it for $8 and less other times. Consistently crisp and clean.

    Thanks for what you do!

  • Had an 06 Juan Gil Monastrell from the Jumilla region in Spain last week that tased like a thirty dollar wine and it was 10 US bones. It rocked, and I will be seeking out other Monastrells from this area ib the future.

QOTD: Damilano Barberba D’Alba 2004. I loved the structure and licorice notes on the mouth-feel and nose (respectively). Of course, it was 7.97 marked down (odd bin) from $18.99

Definitely roll with the original wristband even though it doesn’t have the logo because it fell apart about a week after I got it. Have the second gen one too but missed out on the third one. So pissed!

Best under 10 might be a wine Don Camillo Farnese 05. Enjoyed that. Also a wine called Grillo (that’s all I remember…) which was 7 bucks and really brought some thunder to my mouth.

  • QOTD: I have one of the originals, and I’m STILL rocking it! Can’t wash it though, have to rinse out by hand and let it air dry. Dude, I haven’t been able to get a single one of the new ones! I see everyone sporting those – quite sharp…but we know who the OVs (original vayniacs) are!

Excellent theme for this one, guys. There are a lot of good sauvignon blancs from right here in Temecula Valley that are excellent values but only available locally…maybe I’ll send some for a review? Better yet, c’mon down and we’ll show you around!

QOTD: http://www.cs.drexel.edu/~ctc82/vay-ner-chuk.jpg OG CKC! I’ve had some decent wines from Argentina, but nothing that caught my attention.

Thanks for doing a show in my price range, I try and get two new wines every friday in the $10-$15 range. Every once and awhile I’ll splurge and go to Tria (AWESOME Philly wine bar). I had some wine that smelled and tasted exactly like jalepeno peppers, my pal was happy.
