Little Pengin Cabernet – not awesome but it was good for $6.

Some duboeuf cotes du rhones… not sure which vintage though, and it’s a very mixed batch that man makes. had a chianti senesi recently too, had a whole bunch of names, geografico being the only one I recall. Smelled of artichokes. I LOVE artichokes.

OK, OK, OK, OK… I’ll post. But only because I said I’d be bugging you about Grand Valley AVA wines, and this gives me a chance to do just that.

Best under $10 I’ve had: Plumb Creek “Palisade Red”, which is a meritage of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Zinfandel, Sangiovese and Cabernet Franc.

It comes in just under $10, it’s lovely, complex, substantial and distinctive.

And it’s from the Grand Valley AVA.

The cheapskate wine snob hath spoken.

Great show, Unfortunately, I do not have an under ten dollar wine to recomend. My wife and I did try the evil and she paned it just like you did.

I have found an under $15.00 dollar wine that my wife and I both thought was unreal for the price. 07, yes that is right, 07 Happy Canyon Chucker. It is a Cab Franc based blend from Paso Robles. One of the locals called it “Paso Nouveau”. Imagine instead of the usual nouveau profile of watered down strawberry you have explosive fresh Cab Franc fruit with very complex flavors that you could pick out while drinking the wine. Good and Plenty centers after the candy shell is gone with deep red wine fruits and Cab Franc funk. Oh yes. Truly one of the stars of our wine country trip. I wish I could get my hands on more as the supply is dwindling fast. Road Trip anyone.

  • QOTD: The last wine for under $10 that I really enjoyed was one I bought at my local grocery store, and it was a South African red called Goats Do Roam. Unfortunately, I don’t think it actually specified what grapes it used, but, true to its label’s claims, it was spicy and a little bit tannicky. All in all, it was kinda tasty.

On a side note, my parents are coming into town this coming week, and I look forward to trying to find that Andreza vinho verde and the Taja while joining them for dinner. Thanks for a great show!

Gary, you’re hurting my feelings with how you pronounce Spanish. I mean, I speak the language in my household. LOL

On the Castaño wine… the N gets a different sound when that little squiggly line is over it (the tilde). So the wine’s name is not pronounced Cas-TAN-oh, but actually it’s pronounced Cas-TAN-yoh.

Just changing your Spanish world, Gary, whether you like it or not. 😛

QotD: The last good wine I had under 10 bones was some grocery store Cab. I imagine it was on par with how you rated the EVIL wine. I must admit, I’m seduced by the label and marketing behind the EVIL wine, so I’m willing to “work” with the wine and see if there’s anything that strikes a chord with me.

I’m really interested in the Taja Jumilla, for sure.

Parker gives a wine 50 points just for making it into a bottle.

Jay Miller gives a wine 90 points for having Australia on the label.

    QOTD: 2006 Blason Tocai Friulano

QOTD: a Chenin Blanc ala Sutter Home. It was like $4, which made it taste much better than it was, also I was with some of my best friends which provided a taste++.

Loved the show, few things are better than a cheap wine that outperforms it’s more costly brethren. I absolutely love the Tommolo Montepulciano D’abruzzo, which was 6 bones at TJ’s. I think it drinks like a young baby barolo with more outragious fruit on the front palate.

I love to see a value episode! I had a feeling those two wines would suck given my experiences with past vintages. I’ve had a ton of bad value wines lately but some great $10 or less ones have been:
1 Columbia Crest 2005 Vineyard 10 Two vines (a nice super tuscan type blend with a light fruity profile reminiscent of pinot noir)
2 Kumkani 2005 Chenin Blanc my favorite daily white wine with great tropical fruit.
3 2004 bertrand berge cuvee ancestrale (I actually had it before it was on WLTV)
I hope at some point we’ll get a nice value episode cuz usually most of the wines ending up disappointing.

Nice for the week night value bottle.
Thanks for delivering us from evil!

I’ve yet to have a under 10 bones wine that is good. Last vino I had was Grenache from Spain, called Tres Picos priced at 16 bones, very good good. I highly recommend it, see ya!

  • QOTD: Easily the best white that I have had for under $10.00 is the Clay Station Viognier. Loads of peach and honeysuckle with a rich finish that blends well with the acidity.

For the best red, it would be the Dobbin Lane 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon. Rolling in at eight bucks, it is nice with notes of jam and cassis with a good, solid finish.

Typical Australian wine – fake fruit. Mate you need to get a grip and come to Australia instead of judging on only what you get in. Firstly respect to you but Gary get off the Australian wine is all Yellow Tail! Please stop the pigeon holing Aussie wines.

Peter Mertes Liebfraumilch for under $5 dollars is a good value.
Used to be the wine we drank at college. Liebfraumilch varies greatly by label, as it’s just one step above table wine in Germany. They all tend to be light (note: light as in cheese maybe, but not a meal) fruity and sweet.

Available in the UK for £3.19, so easily under $10. Great cheap wine for a midweek fish dish.

  • QOTD: Redwood Creek chardonnay — yep, a jug. It wasn’t good wine, but it wasn’t bad and it’s cheap. I think the 1.5 liter bottle cost $15, something like that. It’s just adequate enough for sipping outside on a warm summer evening.

And I have had a Loureiro, GV, about two weeks ago. It’s a great alternative to pinot grigio, same lightness and refreshing quality but with more body and flavor than PG.
