I had a Kosher wine over Passover, a Spanish wine from Elvi Wines, it was the 770 priorat it’s a blend of Syrah, Grenache, Caberney, and Merlot. At 15.5% alc it was a real heavy and interesting wine.

Good show GV. I like you to make recommendations of what stands out.

    QoTd
MY recommendation? I think try more wines and vines from Washington.

  • Recommendations… so many…

Lived in Ontario from 1992 – 2005. You did a few mediocre wines from Pelee Island, which are not bad QPR for Ontario. The govt stores flog Aussie grape juice cause they make lotsa money off it. There are a number of interesting wineries, Lenko, Maliviore, and Angels Gate are just a few. Try some Baco Noir for something different, Henry of Pelham Reserve is usually best.

Living in Texas now. Happy with everything I have had from Becker so far. Getting into a few others, will get back to the list when I have tried more.

Latest QPR winner: winery Verget du Sud, wine Au Fils du Temps, $6 or so Rhone blend.

What people need to try, but have not: old wines. We drink wine very young, and miss out on a whole other world. I think it would be good for you to suggest wines for people to buy and cellar. So many of the worlds great wines need 5 – 10 years, and people never try them that way. So many reasonably priced wines get much better with a few years.

    Cheers, Dave.

  • Hey Gary

QOTD: Australian wine from VICTORIA or TASMANIA – you don’t like Barossa Shiraz; OK stop drinking it. Try a King Valley Nebillio or Sangivasse, Yarra Valley Cabernet, Henty Riesling, Bendigo or Grampians Shiraz, Tasmanian Sparkling or Rutherglen fortified.

Went to Sonoma a few months ago armed with my new Vayniac tasting skills, and one smaller winery really stood out to me – Hook & Ladder Winery. I really enjoyed tasting there, and i came home with several bottles of their 2007 Gewurztraminer – I definately reccommend trying it.

Mt.Difficulty or Felton Road Pinot Noirs (NZ)
Sumac Ridge Pinnacle or Meritage (Okanagan Valley, B.C.)
    Tenuta Sette Ponti Oreno

Gary – at your request I’m finally stepping out of ‘lurker’ mode, though I’m always watching the podcasts several days “late” so I always feel like people have moved on to the next show by the time I’m ready to comment. Anyway…

I’d recommend visiting Albania. It’s a fantastic country that after years of being downtrodden under one of the most repressive Stalinist regimes in the world, is now finally (slowly) coming into its own. The people are incredibly friendly, and absolutely LOVE visitors from America. The food is amazing – I had better Italian food than I had in Italy – and the wine is quite pleasant, if not stunning. (Most people grow their own grapes and make their own wines, which is a treat. The soil is so rich that each family can easily keep themselves in wine.) And let’s not forget the geography – beautiful mountainous country that slopes down to the Adriatic. As Croatia gets more and more built up, I expect Albania to be the next “hot” beach resort country.

Also, I’m curious – have you tried the Ridge cabernets from the Santa Cruz Mtns? At least one “French wine” snob was convinced by the ’01 vintage that American wines can be worth drinking.

I strongly recomment the Clos Henri Sauvignon Blanc 2004/2005, this is not your average sauvignon blanc. It’s from Henri Bouregeois, a famous loire wine producer (I believe you did one of their pouilly fumés once)who bought an estate in New Zealand where this wine is from. I love it!

Gary, love the show, I’m a lurker but felt I should cross the realm to be a commenter.

I’ve been watching the show for over a year and I gotta ask. Is there any Australian wine that you’ve actually liked?
It’s always ‘fake fruit’ this and ‘over the top’ that. I mean come on, there’s gotta be something that’s good, they all cant be bad.

I’m feeling that you might have some blinkers on there. =)

    Anyhoo, keep bringing the thunder.

    J.K.

  • QOTD: 2005 Forrest Estate Sauvignon Blanc from NZ. Massive White Grapefruit zest from start to finish, with some sweet melon on the mid-pallet. The finish has the switchblades. The wine totally rocks my socks. For ~$14 USD I think it is a total steal of a deal for anyone. Approachable for noobs, and has some elegance for the oneophile.

    !@#$%^&*()

P.S. Check out the site…. I do a re-cap of the week and make a list of similar wines available in Ontario for “C-Squared O” (Canadian Contingent Ontario).

I recommend … how about a couple more recommendation shows? I generally prefer the usual format (wines you haven’t tried), but this might be nice about once a month.

  • QOTD: Nachtgold Eiswein. An interesting value: it’s an ice wine that I’ve gotten for about 17 bones:

I like it. Very smooth and candy-sweet. It was the first wine that my wife drank faster than I did.
