EP 457 Vernaccia Wines From Italy, Another White Wine To Pay Attention To.

Vernaccia is another classic white wine that is overlooked by so many as they focus on the 1 or 2 white wines they drink from Italy. I hate to pick on Pinot Grigio but I want people to expand their palates.

Wines tasted in this episode:

Fontaleoni Vernaccia Di San GimignanoVernaccia di San Gimignano
2006 Sovestro Vernaccia Di San GimignanoVernaccia di San Gimignano

Gary, I’ve been a bit of a lurker for the last several months but I still love the show and I’m a big fan! Great work. Here’s the question I’ve been meaning to ask since the first show…

QOTD – WHY DOESN’T WINE EVER JUST SMELL LIKE GRAPES OR WHY IS THE WORD “GRAPES” NEVER USED AS A DESCRIPTION?

Surely there must have been 1 or 2 simple wines over the last 457 shows that you sniffy sniffed that must have just smelled like “grapes”. Why can’t anyone just admit it? Why is it taboo to just say, “hey, this wine just smells like sour grapes and alcohol” or “Wow, over ripe Concords on the nose” …We would know what you mean. It would seem eveyone trys to find any flavor or smell to describe wine but always overlooking the obvious.
Time to add a bowl of grapes to Extensive Palate Training 101! Come on, I dare you to use “smells like Grapes” in a description!

Qotd: Why do you point to your head during the NFL draft??! Have a great weekend, thanks for the show!

  • Thanks for coming through with the shout out GV.

When you come to Portland you should go to Powell’s Books if you can.

There have been a bunch of white wine WLTV shows recently. As a result, I bought some new whites to expand my palate. I bought more than what I’m listing but here are a few that I look forward to tasting soon:

    2006 Taburno, Falanghina
2006 Josef Schmid, Kremser Weingarten, Gruner Veltliner
    2006 Domaine Renaud, Pouilly-Fuisse

QOTD: Do you want to see my wine list/my cellar inventory?

Nice enthusiasm on the show today!

QOTD – I would probably be happy or sad depending on how the Yankees did that night. But, if i was going to ask you a wine question, It would probably be about which wines you most recently enjoyed. Then you could mention how you actually have a book coming out with 101 wine recommendations. At this point, I would either be impressed, or think you are showing off…

    Have a great weekend!

Italian wines are great. I’m going to be attending a seminar given by a Master Sommelier (Laura de Pasquale) on indigenous wines of Italy so we’ll see what she has to say.
QOTD: If you had your own winery, where would it be located, what would you call it, what grapes would you grow, and what wines would you make?

    Happy Birthday Mrs. V (Ma)!

First, Gary, thanks for challenging me to try new wines. I’ve been exploring Italian, Southwestern French, Spanish, and South American wines in the pst few months, thanks to you.

I’d be sure to ask you if you ever had moments of serious doubt about what you were doing. If so, what helps you overcome those doubts? Do you ever feel like you’re beating your head against the wall?

I just e-mailed you, by the way, about an African-american winemaker you might try to connect with while you’re in the Bay Area on your book tour, maybe schedule him as a guest on your show. The S.F. Chronicle just did a nice write-up on him:

He sounds like a kindred spirit to you Gary, and I think you’d get a kick out of him.

    Great Show!!!

I can’t wait for you to come to Houston. I’ll be going to two of your events at the Houston Wine and Food Week…..hopefully all three if I can make the time.

QOTD: My question would probably be, Let’s take a shot, what kinda tequila do you want?

    –RH

  • I really liked the show today, nice buzz you got going and another NEW wine to look for!

    Happy birthday Tamara.

QOTD – “So Gary, if you did not get into wine, where would you have ended up by now?”
