qotd: Not a big sports fan, but having seen this with my Dad on dvd and hearing it referenced over the years many times, I’m going with the the 1958 National Football League Championship game on December 28th that went into sudden death overtime between the Colts and the Giants. Baltimore took what I’ve heard many times referred to as the single greatest football game ever played.

I want to start off by saying that I really respect what you do, love your show and have been watching everyday for the last 102 episodes; however, It seems like you’re hesitant to rate a lower priced wine above your comfort zone (around 90 points). For instance on today’s show, you really seemed to love the 2006 Martinetti Gavi Di Gavi but only scored it 1 point higher (90 points) than the 2006 Villa Sparina Gavi Di Gavi, which you liked. Your passion exploded when tasting the second wine, but you hesitated to give it a higher score. I am a red wine drinker, but your enthusiasm and description of the second wine makes me want to go and buy it (expanding my palate :). I would have expected you to rate the second wine 92+ by the way you seemed to enjoy it. Please do not take this criticism the wrong way and please don’t stop rating the wines. I think it’s important in understanding how one compares to another in your opinion. I use that to judge what to try and not try based on how our palates are the same and differ. I am still getting used to how your palate compares to mine but in the end the score is still beneficial (along with the explanation). I just get a little confused when we run into a difference between how you express a wine and how you rate the wine. In those situations I am at a loss as to how to pursue whether to buy it or not.

One favorite sports moment? Impossible. Nominees: ’95 Orange Bowl – Cory Schlesinger scores the go-ahead TD on a fullback trap that completely suckered Warren Sapp and his Miami buddies and Nebraska wins the national championship; Henry Aaron hits his 715th HR; Tommie Frazier breaks c. 241 tackles by the Florida Gators as the Huskers win their second consecutive national championship; (you may sense a theme here….).

KICKBALL is the greatest fun with 4th graders. Funny things happen all the time. Like yesterday the ball was kicked, popped off a girl’s shoe and the kid next to her caught it! Was that a fly ball, or what? Or when a kid, not watching the game is bending over in the outfield when the ball is kicked and it hits them in the butt. It illustrates what I say over and over “keep your eye on the ball!”

  • I’ve always wanted to try the Gavis since it was paired with a sun-dried tomato recipe that I saw on a VHS video by a local Italian restaurant in DC years ago. I will definitely try this one.

QOTD: Personal: Throwing a no-hitter at my last high school game where I stuck out 17 of a possible 21 batters. Asked to come to tryouts by 4 pro teams; Os, Mets, Senators (last yr they were here) and Royals. The Royals drafted me out of high school but did not go. Long story.

Professional sports moment: Wanna guess? No, its not the Colts’ Super Bowl victory but rather the comeback victory on those Cheatin’ Pats in the AFC Championship that I will talk about until I die. I’ve got goosebumps just talking about it.

    Be safe

P.S. See ya on the 26th!!!!

Favorite was watching Iverson drop 50 points to beat the Kings in overtime at the Wachovia center, followed closely by watching the Flyers eliminate the defending champ Devils from the playoffs at home the year before Gary Bettman ruined hockey.

QOTD – For myself it would be hitting my one and only homerun (in little league) during the all star game.
I know it sounds like a cop out but all of the GIANTS Superbowl Victories (you will enjoy one someday, maybe) and definitely the eight run, eighth inning, Mets come from behind win against the Braves, on fireworks night with my soon to be wife, at Shea Stadium. Big ups to sporting events and always sharing those moments with friends and family. Next year you have to bring your Pops to the draft.

QOTD: Definitely 2006 AFC Championship where Indi overcame the Pats late in the 4th quarter. I was ecstatically jumping up and down and screaming (Both because of my love for Peyton Manning and my hate for Tom Brady)

  • Thanks to our Vets!

Lots of great sports moments, but the 1987 Fiesta Bowl when Penn State upset in a BIG way Miami and your boy (NOT) Vinny Testaverde. Five picks that night! I wonder if Vinny still wakes up once-in-a-while from the white helmeted nightmare of that night!!!

QOTD: Watching Steve Kerr get the dish from M.J. in game six of the ’97 series and drop the game winner! I thought it showed the respect that M.J. had for Steve’s shooting ability. I grew up in Tucson watching Kerr play and no one really thought that he would make it in the pros. They thought he was too slow and always neede to shoot off of a screen so it was a very special moment for me.
