I love the 2004 Branson Coach Rare Shiraz. I’m relatively new to the world of over $10 wines so this is one of the more expensive wines I’ve had outside of a restaurant, but it’s also one of the best I’ve tasted. Definately a wine I’d buy for a party or special ocaision if you know your guests are into the intense fruit-bomb type reds. In fact, I’ve got a bottle of this wine, a 2005 La Serena Rosso di Montalcino, and a bottle of 2003 Chateau Rieussec Sauternes saved for when I finish my masters coursework.

I can’t drink the Molly. Everyone I’ve ever had is just too extracted for me.

    QOTD – Probably a Penfolds, maybe a Bin 389 from 2001.

  • Gary, I always love the blind tastings…I find it difficult to believe 1/3 people are so put off by your intro that they’ll actually leave. However, as you said, if toning it down a bit is what it’s going to take, then do it – everyone should be watching the *entire* episode!

Gary, great show and thanks for my 20 minutes today. I really needed it.

QOTD: Without a doubt the 2004 Chris Ringland Ebenzer Shiraz. Unbelievable wine and it’s only $20 bones. 20,000 cases made. Everyone has got to try this one.

Enjoyed the show and I like the blind tasting format. Since you mentioned it, why not do more blind tastings of wines with widely varied prices: $10 up against $30 and $60?

  • Yellow Tail all the way

QOTD: Yellow Tail (YT) MAGNUM baby! I think it just tastes better than the 750ml. I had it last night and on Saturday and the Monday before that, and a few dozen other times since the beginning of the year.

Twice a year the local super market has a wine blow and YT mags goes for under $10. I rent a Uhaul and clean up. These things also make great gifts, just make sure to strip the label before wrapping it. People will think it’s a $200 wine.

QOTD: 2005 Hewitson Private Cellar Shiraz/Mouvedre 75-25. Even though it probably needs about three more years it showed great balance.

Blind tasting shows always good clean fun. I’m an unabashed Shiraz skank, there is something about that juice! We throw a lot of beef on the barbie here in AZ and for some reason I love the way Shiraz and cow pair up.

  • “Bellenberry” “Landscaper with a rollup around his hand” unbelievable sniffy-sniff descriptions and as always, I lovvvvvvvve gthese blind tastings which falls into my wheelhouse.

That being said, a fantabulous show and I, too, have come back to the Aussie Shirazes. The ‘Dooker is waaaay over the top but gotta love their labels.

QOTD: 7-1/2 months? Let’s see, I think the ’01 Dead Arm Shiraz (aka the Brett Favre vintage) 🙂 was the last Aussie Shiraz I had worth remembering. Now I do take a liking to the Rosemount “Hill of Gold” shiraz on a pinch. Not a bad wine.

    Cheers!

P.S. That moment watching King Phelps was absolutely the most amazing feat in sports I’ve seen in a lonnnnnng time. Gave me goosebumps.

  • I concur with other commenters on the ’06 Mollydooker Blue Eyed Boy. I don’t love Aussie Shiraz but this was the best I’ve had in the last 7.5 months.

As it seems many of us do… love the blind tastings.

Have only tried a few Aussie Shiraz. None to write home about. Albeit never tried one in this price category. I much prefer the way the old world blends with this grape. CDP, CDR, Cote Rotie, Languedoc, etc. More elegance less fruit bomb.

  • I really like the thunder creed! That’s what it’s all about. =)

QOTD: Well, I went back through my notes to see what was the last shiraz I drank, and both shirazes (sp?) I rated got really low scores (83 and 75) so I guess my favorite was the Archetype Barbossa 2004. I’m sure I’ve had shiraz that I’ve liked, I just don’t have a record. (and I don’t remember)

Even at sa….sa…….sa……seventy bones, I really enjoyed the blind tasting. As it turned out, I was watching, while drinking, a sa………sa……..seven dollar bottle of, oh, yeah, Yellow Tail Sharaz. (While I have put down, say………a bathtub full of Yellow Tail, I’m not going to say it was my favorite, although the price point might indicate otherwise).

Hey………Sarah and Sparky “Mar-qwiss”!, Not Marqee

QOD: A few, not super sure of vintages:
    Penfolds RWT 2001
    Amon RA 2002
Godolphin (Cab shiraz blend, no longer made under that name)
Penfolds St Henri (great balance, everything in check)2001
    Mitolo GAM 2004
    Massena 11th hour 2004

Want a horrible aussie wine……..Have a Mollydooker wine served in a restaurant that doesn’t have them at a cool enough temp like 75 degrees! Talk about flab and heat! These are wines that NEED to be served at 60*F.
