Very good show as I love the Aussie wines.

QOTD – Kaesler 2005 Stonehouse Shiraz. Really enjoyed that during my grandaughters birthday party.

  • QOTD: A super simple, cheap one: the 2005 Langhorne Crossing, which has
picked up where the 2004 left off a few months ago. (The ’05 has in fact gotten smoother in the bottle just in the last 3-4 months.)
In general, I find throwing money at pricier Aussie Shirazes a total waste of time, though I admit to being intrigued by the winner on the show today.

  • An aussie shiraz, Barrel Monkeys ’04, by Red Heads studios, was my first “epiphany” regarding wine. If only you hadn’t said 7.5 months! I tried the ’05 vintage of the same wine, and was sorely let down. Several sickly-sweet, flabby shiraz’s later, I gave up on Australia.

QOTD: Nothing I’ve liked recently. I keep trying every month or so.

Love the blinds G-Man. Way to do tough guy!

QOTD: 05′ Mitolo GAM, but for my pal Aussie’s are on the un-inspiring end of the circle right now, with the exception of a certain Hensche grenache- that would easily fake me out in a blind.

    QOTD- 2002 Branson Coach Rare.

I couldn’t agree more with you Gary, It is funny how our platelets do change. You hit it right on the nose.
    See you in Miami

  • Nice episode. Though 60 to 70 bones is a little out of my budget, I appreciate the knowledge.

QOTD: The only Aussie shiraz I’ve had in the past 6-7 months was 2006 Little Penguin Shiraz. OK, but not expecting a lot for a sub $10 wine.

  • Don’t have a favorite shiraz from Australia. Anyway, love the blind format, much like how my own group does wine tastings. Two thumbs up.

QOTD: 1999 Elderton Command Shiraz; if it was a fruit bomb, it now longer is. It is complex and wonderful to drink.

First of all: Screw the minority! Who cares if 30% of viewers don’t enjoy the Gary NRG (energy). We love all y’all at WLTV even though some might find Gary to be over-the-top. I enjoy the blind tastings though the price range for this show is quite high. I’m not a big Syrah fan though Wyndham has brought some thunder to my pal…

Gary, Interesting to see your taste heading back to the new world. I started there in my early years of wine but now am a diehard old worlder with wines like Barolo, Uva di troia, rioja and Bordeaux. Hope to make the transition back in time like you in the future.

Qotd: 2004 Two Hands “Knarley Dude” and for the QPR play the 2005 Thorne Clark Shotfire. The 05 in this wine is rippin @ 14 bucks. Most of it is gone from distribution now but still have few bottles in my cellar. BtW 06 is only fair at best

QOTD: Aw man, don’t remember the name of the last shiraz I had, but I know I had a great one. I know it was a 2005 killibin…something like that.

    Great show!

I’ll never get tired the blindy-blind format. Interesting findings, and GO PHELPS!

QOTD: B-rock Stn (probably the only one I’ve had recently)

QOTD: Had a Mr Riggs not too long ago. Not sure if it fits in the 7 month window….but, it was certainly my most recent, memorable Aussie bomb.

  • QOTD – 2004 “The Celts” from Torbreck. Bit of a fruit bomb, but absolutely gorgeous raspberry filled chocolate truffle flavors. A nose I could have sniffy-sniffed for hours and a finish that just went on and on and on. I loved this bottle of wine.

    Hi Gary,

I don’t think it’s fair to you to taste wines from 2000 all the way to 2006… you know what I mean… tell Ian to stop that…

    QOTD: Mitolo GAM 2006

    best!!

  • QOTD: I’ve only had one Australian shiraz, and I won’t call them out on it because there’s no way it wasn’t heat damaged. It was inexpensive (around $15) but it tasted so absolutely horrid that there’s no way it could have been alright.

For shiraz in general, I had a 2006 Boccantino Nero d’Avola Shiraz from Sicily recently, and it was excellent! Got it on sale for about $11, and it tasted like $20-$25 for sure. Great wine, if you see it, definitely pick it up.
