Randy B had a great question for Gary – I second the question:

“Hereâ??s a question for you my friend: You often speak of the mid-palate. Iâ??m trying to develop that sensation. Could you recommend a couple of wines that have a huge mid-palate and a couple of wines that have nothing in the middle? Iâ??ve love to get them and start the education!”

QOTD: 2002 Marquis Philips Shiraz Integrity – it was also my all time favorite shiraz

Love the blind tastings, nothing like seeing what comes out on top. I really hopeing the beer episode is tomorrows.

QOTD: I have been on more of a Syrah kick lately, but the best Shiraz I have had according to CT was 2005 the watcher by fetish wines. Great QPR bottle that actually has some complexity to it.

QOTD – I enjoyed the Laughing Magpie from d’Arenberg.

Love the blind tasting. I would be interested in seeing you really squirm and do a completely blind tasting – just 3-4 bottles that you know nothings about. It would be fun to see you taste, give notes, and guess what they are…

HUGE fan of the blind tastings!

qotd…not a big aussie guy… like the syrah of southern rhone much better (but if you look up my ip address and track to my orders you would know that already) but the one I did like was a syrah grenache blend… D’Arenberg Darry’s original

  • Very nice show Gary! I always like the blind tasting thing.. Keep that up! Maybe with some German wines next time? (The last one was on EP 397!!!!!)

@QOTD: Uh, I think the 2001 Yalumba Octavius, the 2002 Rusden Black Guts or the 2006 Mollydooker Carnival of Love.

QOTD: 2005 Step Rd, I really like it. You had Black Wing, the winery’s “second wine” in #379.

I have only just started drinking/enjoying wine (for about a year now) and I’m very much into Shiraz. Could it be that Shiraz is a “beginner wine”? Perhaps because of the fruit bomb thing?

QOTD: I haven’t had a lot of Australian Shiraz recently, but I did like the backend tannins on the Nugan Estates Durif that I had recently. A little too much vanilla and ripe boysenberry and blackberry reduction, but the dryness on the finish is redeeming.

QOTD: That’s easy to answer. My favourite Australian Shiraz over the last 7 1/2 months was the Heartland Director’s Cut Shiraz 2003. Great effort by Ben Glaetzer, incredible QPR at EUR 16.

Great show dude! Love the blinds.
QOTD:I’ve been really enjoying the 2004 Kilakanoon Kellermans Run Shiraz. Less than 20 bones, and very well balanced.

  • I really liked the Pertaringa Undercover Shiraz 2006, but what I’m REALLY loving at the moment is Australian Cabernet – do a show on them Gary – they are seriously good, a little old worldy with great earthy, green pepper coming through but with a bundle of fruit.

Nice show. I always enjoy the blind tasting shows.

QOTD: Every year or so a try an Aussie Shiraz, just to verify that I still find them flabby and overripe and as of late – overpriced. Last one I had was: 2004 Kay Brothers Shiraz, Hillside, and it was as expected. Maybe next year . . . .

    1. 2006 Hobbs, Gregor – amarone type shiraz, first time i tried it & is just sinfully delicious. in that tasting Greg Hobbs said his 2006 Shiraz will be a killer vintage…….
    2. Standish, the Standish – very elegant shiraz with the structure to hold the fruits up….. delish….
    3. 2005 Radford Dale – an extremely under valued Eden Valley producer, they make killer shiraz & riesling…….. need to check this one out guys

Blind tastings are without a doubt my favorite format of your show. I’m glad you don’t do them all the time because I get SO PUMPED… (Macho Man style) when you do.

QOTD: I haven’t had any good Aussie Shiraz lately… I haven’t gone outside of $20 a bottle and when I did go over $30 is was a disappointment. I enjoy the cousin Syrah grape much more!

QOTD = Henry Holmes Barossa Valley 2002 Shiraz – not “over the top fruit bomb”, relatively speaking. It IS full of fruit, but velvety smooth. Kind of like Lou Rawls, smooth, velvety, but with a little bit of “pop” to it.

Enjoyed the blind tasting. Wow…$70 wine in a brown bag…not in my neighborhood.

    Peace out.

  • Been drinking a 2005 Shiraz-Viognier blend from Terlato & Chaputier. An Australian wine from a Frenchman and a Napa Californian.

When I was in Australia, I used to buy the “clean skins” available at all the liquor stores – wine made from surplus grapes and sold unlabeled right next to the cash registers. Shiraz and sometimes sav blanc, cabernet, no wineries on the label, something like $5Aus. Some pass, but most of the time – THUNDER! You got to know the guys working at the shop, and they’d tell you when new shipments came in and often how they were. There are so many grapes down there.
