I’m really impressed that he doesn’t have a chard by the glass on there. Good for him.

After seeing Jesse on this show, my wife just told me she’s flying to NY next week for “business”.

    Hey, stop the rating stuff.

This was exactly the type of thing I’ve been waiting for from the show. I like the direction. Helping peeps out there in real life situation. Brilliant job.

  • QOTD: I’m saying Portuguese vinho verdes. “Green” wines from Portugal are inexpensive, on the sweet side without being too sweet, and very nice on a hot summer’s day. Around here, I can get a bottle for less than $10, and have it top a lot of $15-$20 Rieslings for most people who like sweet wines. There are also plenty of aged vinho verdes for under $15 that have an interesting complexity, and are just really well made wines.

    QOTD: Greco di Tufo.

Like the concept, but do you need to rate everything?

In doing this type of show how about adding some recommended wine/food pairings that highlight the restaurant too.

Got to agree the cinematography is too “Blair Witch”. I had to walk out of that movie.

I was waiting for you to go outside and give people ratings. I bet they would freak out when you give them a “Sniffy Sniff” lol It would be so worth it just to watch everyone’s reaction.

  • Roberto

woweeeee , am a bit dizzy but who cares, great idea, great show!!!! it’s all good GV.

QOTD: I think it’ll be Torrontes, normally a Salta Region wine from Argentina… it brings the thunder but is friendly enough for wine beginners!!

Definately a fun show, I’m digging the new idea. As a side note Gary, I saw your article in Wine and Spirits, congrats, keep it up!

Good show, great concept. But was very hard to watch, very disjointed, and the back and forth action was a little much. Would also like to see the list a little more clearly.

QOTD – Do not have clue. That’s why I watch you.

Good plug for Public Restaurant, but not particularly helpful outside of NYC. It would have been a little more interesting if you had told the price of Jesse’s and your ‘list picks’.

    Smell it first!

  • I miss Mott!!
Since I don’t eat out at fancy restaurants often this is something that might appeal to other vaniacs but leaves the CKC a little stranded. Maybe you could review on glass and then review the list. What I thought was really valuable from the episode was Jesse. What he had to say about the NZ scene made me want to try wines from NZ (that aren’t sauvenon blancs).

QOTD: I’m gonna go with Chenin Blanc. Twice this summer I brought Chenin Blancs to a party and it was a huge hit both times. (and each wine cost me $4!!)

I’ll give that episode a score of 70. If Mott was running the camera, you need a new cameraman. You need to get back to your roots GV — reviewing wines and answering questions. That is what made us love you. We don’t need another internet superstar.

Interesting concept, but I guess I’d have to see a few more to see how it might help

QOTD – not sure, but I’d like to see more white Rhone blends on lists

You roll however you want to G-Man. One critique though, menu???-and optimal pairings. And put the somm on the spot a little more.

    QOTD: cheap white bordeaux.

I felt like my 90 year old grandfather trying to look at a wine list without my glasses. I’m sure you’re aware of the camera difficulties, I just had to say it. I like the new addition, just need to tweak or focus it a bit. Cheers!

Great show. Very good idea to review restaurant wine lists. Especially like the selecting of the one bottle and one glass.

    Gary,
Great idea. Even though us MD peeps may never make it to Public, it helps educate your viewers on how to approach a wine list. Even after years of drinking and studying wine, the wine list can be intimidating to the uninitiated (especially the uninitiated on a budget).

  • Great, great show. I, as you, rate every restaurant on their wine lists and this one sounded quite varied though did not hear Malbec or CA cab though Im sure they were on the list. Maybe an esoteric Aglianico would have piqued my interest.

QOTD: I would put my money on Vinho Verde as being the next “Great White Hope.” I’m having one right now from Portugal.

    Keep it up!

    Cheers,
    Dom

P.S. I did not like the Blair Witch/Cloverfield effect. Put it on a case of wine, please.

  • The camera technique was pretty basic for this show, but under the circumstances, it wasn’t distracting after the first minute or so. I wound up really getting into it all: The idea of reviewing restaurant wine lists, chatting with the sommelier, and all the rest.

Hope you do more like this one. But not every time, as I haven’t been to NYC since the ’70s, and probably won’t get there again unless I win the Irish Sweepstakes or something. 8>))

QOTD: The new white? It’s hard to say what the world, or the US, will pick up on that’s new. But as for me, I’m totally getting into Picpoul. It’s got a fresh taste, clean mouth-feel, and a fascinating lime or lime peel overtone. I’m drinking it this summer with fish, salads, Greek salad, and the like, stuff that I might have paired in 2006 or 2007 with Grüner Veltliner, or in years past with dry Gewürztraminer or Entre-Deux-Mers.

That said, before I open another Picpoul, I plan to try two other fresh whites I’ve heard good things about but never tried: Txacoli from the Navarre and Dr Konstantin Frank’s Rkatsiteli from New York’s Finger Lakes. So maybe I’ll be singing a different song by September!
