Had the Cabo Wabo when I visited the Cabo Wabo Cantina in Cabo. I remember it being good, but nothing spectacular. At home, I don’t often drink tequila straight, but when I do, it’s usually Patron Añejo. Based on the previous posters’ comments, I should probably try Don Julio. For margaritas, I usually use Cazadores or Patron Silver.

If you want to avoid a nasty headache after drinking tequila, always stick to 100% agave tequila. Avoid the cheap grain alcohol blend tequilas (e.g. Cuervo Especial) like the plague.

QOTD: I’m a really quiet, reserved kind of guy, so my co-workers know practically nothing about me, and I prefer it that way.

What the heck do insects smell like. WHAT!?!

  • Insects have a pretty distinct smell. It is sort of pungent, bitter and metallic…Hard to describe, and definitely not something you can really smell from any distance. They also tend to have sort of a dusty smell.

Don’t ask why I know. Just appreciate that I do.

    😛

cool show. i’m a huge fan of don julio reposado myself. but yeah, it was a revolutionary day when i found out tequila could be an excellent, high quality drink and not just something that college kids got wrecked on.

qotd: probably my penchant for crazy death metal 😀

Athough I have has a few good Tequilas. I prefer sippin Mezcal!!!

Try these for the Mezcal show….

    Del Maguey Single Village Mezcals
Gran Reserva Beneva (pumpkin shaped bottle)
    El Ray Zapoteco

Mezcal vs Tequila bind would also be fun

    1) Thank goodness we have evolved beyond shots of “Two Fingers”
    2) Sorry Gary, but too much football today for me…
    3) I remember hearing a guest expert on the Splendid Table radio show talk about tequila and say something I always thought, but never felt comfortable saying out loud. In essence he said that rested and aged tequilas are a hoax and a fad. If you really want true tequila flavor stick to the blancos, silvers and platinums. I like El Tesoro, and for really good value try El Conquistador.

first thought…while it was cool to see tequila given its due as a sipper, the two most dramatic uses I’ve encountered recently were in cocktails…one in a pretty much indescribable concoction at WD50 that involved pink peppercorn with watermelon turned into something that (wait for it) felt like Felt (rimming the glass).

The other was a bonafide rendition of the classic ‘Le Perla’ at Bourbon and Branch in SF (coincidentally on the same trip we were at the taping of Ep. 500 at Crushpad)…pear liqueur, essence of clove, manzanilla and reposada.
    ’twas transcendent.

I love it when we mix things up on the show. Tequila is not what I was expecting, but found it very interesting. This is one area of spirits that I have not explored at all (for drinking neat). Good stuff!!!!

QOTD: Tough, I share a lot about myself w/ the coworkers… maybe that I’m considering leaving my trade for the wine world. Scary!

Thanks for the tequila show. I’ve been a tequila fan for a while now. I’ve always liked the depth and complexity of anejos, but recently I’ve been thinking the oak flavors kind of overpwer the flavor of the agave in anejos. I might be on my way to being an unaged (blanco/silver) tequila purist.

GREAT QOTD: probably would have a lot to do with the results and existence of my psychedelic journeys

Boo!!! Giving Cabo a 92 is like giving DuBoeuf Beaujolais Nouveau a 92!!! Cabo is a lot like cotton candy; I can’t believe that you liked it so much. Otherwise, continue mixing it up on WLTV, we really like diverting from the wine for just a bit.
QOTD: My bosses at my old job don’t know that I took a week off to go to Holland… 🙂 Otherwise, we’re pretty friendly with our co-workers.

    Hi Gary,

I’ve never tried Tequila but, as much as I loved this episode I don’t think I’ll rush out to buy any. Just seems a little too heavy for my palate (did not enjoy tasting Vodka when I tried that).

QOTD: I’m a big CB and ham fan!

    Cheers

I love tequila, and my favorite to date is El Jimador Reposado, which I prefer to Cabo Wabo and all of the Patron offerings.
QOTD: Most people do not know that I was a nightclub DJ for 15 years before earning my doctorate in clinical psychology.

  • Man, last time I had tequilla….

QOTD: My coworkers know nothing about the music I listen to and about the places in town where I hang out..they just know the 9-5 Mike and that’s a tenth of who I am. Good question!

    Gary,

I enjoy watching your wine posts but I am just not interested in tequila, sake, etc. I don’t even watch the episodes that are not wine related. Just thought I would let you know. It seems that most people love the other topics but there must be others like me that are not interested.

  • Not too shabby a show, even though I am not a Tequila fan.

QOTD – It used to be my wine obsession, and then the wine writing – most people in the office have found out about that but it’s still enough of a secret to answer the question.

    Cool show!
I just did a swap with a Mexican colleague.
He got me a Don Julio 1842 tequila, which is apparently the top of the line.
I gave him a 1997 Castello Banfi Brunello.

QOTD – I am a huge music fan, guitar player, and love to head bang!

  • Nice show. Will try the Cabo Wabo sometime, absolutely.
QOTD: I’m currently between positions so the question is non sequitor.

QOTD: The fact that I constantly over-think things, right down to weighing the probably outcome and consequences of each and every decision throughout the shift. It’s probably some sort of obsessive behavior… oh well- that’s me.

  • tequila – how i love and hate you. We always have a bottle of Patron Silver at home and I have branched out to some different Anejos. I still get a little weak in the stomach from the smell of it, taking shots the day you get your wisdom teeth out = Epic Fail.

QoTD – Open book, I am transparent in life so there is not much that my co-workers don’t know about me…
