Good show, Gary. The best sub-$13 wine I’ve had lately was Francois Montand Blanc de Blancs. It’s a very good French sparkling wine, especially for the price.

Hi Gary & Nation: qotd: My inexpensive ‘house red’ is a nice Spanish red for six $ @ Trader Joe in Reno: Familia Sanchez: Tempranillo and Syrah, 13.5%. Jammy and pleasantly mouth filling with a velvety, concentrated texture.
    Smell it first!

  • Great show Gary,

The best recent under-$13 red I’ve had was actually the Pillar Box Red you reviewed… I actually liked it a bit better than you (89 pts.)

I also recently had the ’07 MonteNovo but wasn’t as high on it as you were (88 pts. for me). My best under-$13 white of late was actually a 2001 Disznoko Tokaji Dry Furmint. A total shocker for me as it was my first ever dry Tokaji.

QOD———hate to do it, but my best buy in the last month is the Ste Michelle Riesling 2007 Washington State. $6.99 grocery stores, $5.99 liquor store and 10% off for purchases over 6. At 1.9% r.s., it’s just a little sweet for me, but that sweetness helps bring out the tropical flavors. A dry riesling can be had for the same price, but it’s just a bit too bracing. Also the semillon is great for the same price.

So Gary, are you going to “Eat Crow” for the Joe Torre “way overrated” comment from months back?

Did you know that the name “Dodgers” was shortened from “Trolley Dodgers” used from 1911-1931?

    QOTD:

Marietta Old Vine Red is a favorite. I think they’re up to Lot #47 now. Typically a blend of Zin, Carignane, Syrah, Petite Sirah, and a bit of Cab. The blend provides for a very flavorful, medium to full-bodied, reasonably complex wine. Fruit-driven with a bit of spice and absolutely no funk. The Oak Monster is not a player with this wine. Very good price-point(usually around $10).

  • agree on the Pillar Box – although for $8/btl I thought it perfect to serve at BBQs and bought a six pack…

Once again thanks for the Birthday shoutout…this week I’ve had a couple good >$11 dollar bottles, Bogle Petit Syrah, nice color, good fruit, decent structure.

I also had Big House Red, from Big House winery, Crazy mashup of half a dozen varietals, wild as hell, but damn fun to drink. Plus there website is cute as hell.

Thanks again for what ya do GV!

Great idea for a show: Gary, you really bring the thunder!!!

QOTD: I got a great Loire valley sauvignon blanc. 2006 Domaine de Chatenoy Menetou-Salon for 9?, I guess that s around 13$.

Great nose: floral, lime, a bit of asparagus.
Nice flavour: a bit of peach, nice acidity, lemon-lime on the mid-palate, subtle exotic fruit finish. Good structure and long finish.

had it today and had avery pleasant surprise!

  • What a great episode for Mott– face time and the big zoom. Way to go, Mott!!

QOTD: 2007 Leonard Kreusch Spatlese Riesling. 9 bucks and some change at my local shop. This was my first German Riesling so I don’t have a comparison, but I really liked it. I have a newbie palate, but I really enjoyed the flavor– like the syrup from canned peaches. I’ve been craving it since.

Thank you for bringing value, though most wines today didn’t bring ‘the thunder’.

  • Oak monster was “flaming” in more ways than one.

Good show in an attempt for good “house” wines. I like it.

QOTD: I’m guessing here since mine was cut short but I’ll go with the Steenbur SB from SA you reviewed last week. Also, 5 is my fav number. Brooks Robinson

  • Wojtek

One good show. QOD: Roble 2006 Bodegas Pingon from Ribera del Duero. Simple but delicious.

QOTD: a friend brought over a $10 bottle of wine recently, and I was pleasantly surprised. 2001 Bodegas Saenz de Santamaria Rioja Rondan Crianza, http://www.cellartracker.com/wine.asp?iWine=230300

Fun episode, GaryV, and quite timely for me. One of my friends is having a $15-and-under wine party soon, as a way to find good wines that fit her budget. I’m looking forward to it!
