I have to admit that I don’t understand cheap “meh” wine. For $6, you could get 5 servings of very nice scotch, or a 6-pack of craft beer. Why drink crappy wine?

    QOTD: enchiladas. lots of them.

Interesting episode. Bingo night?!! Guess I run with a different crowd ; )

Good to see our Mr. Mott on the laid-back Friday couch being… well, laid-back!

QOTD: Since I’m working this weekend (evening shift) and not likely to get a meal break, probably boring, utilitarian food with enough whole grain carbs to keep me upright and protein to keep me going. Oh, and coffee. Monday I’ll fix something amazing (like a pumpkin stew with chicken and whatever veggies are around) -throw it in the crock pot and collapse…

    Hey Gary,

There was a bit of “shock and awe” when I spotted the Yellow Tail on your table today… Nice to see you giving the “mass market” wine a shot.

This weekend is our Wine Night (on Sunday) where my group will be meeting and bringing in some pot-luck surprises to accompany their individual wine selections. Typically we select a theme pertaining to wine regions or grape varietals but this week’s dinner is wide-open as the only restriction is to bring wines with a “Halloween Theme Label” or costumed appearance. We’ll be attempting to pair food with whatever wine selection we provide. I know some Columbia Valley (WA) blends like Brian Carter’s “Abracadabra,” Furion Cellars “Wicces Basium (Witches Kiss)” and Sleight of Hand’s “Spellbinder” will be there as well as Paso Creek (Sonoma) Cabernet Sauvignon, Peachy Canyon (Paso Robles) Jester and Alexander Valley Vineyards “Sin Zin.” I’m certain some of those just getting into wine will bring some of the labels like “Evil,” “Rabid Dog,” “Owen Roe” wines, “7 Deadly Zins” and Bogle’s “Phantom.”

Some of the food pairings include roast beet and carrot salad, osso buco, italian sausage, coconut prawns, Fennel encrusted lamb-chops, Chocolate Lava Cakes and more…

Needless to say, just like every month – I’m looking forward to it!

Nice Friday show. Picked up one bottle of the Tokaji in my sale mixed-case (p.s. thanks for the good deals!) Excited to try it and some of the other fun goodies.

QOTD: Tonight i’m planning on making an acorn squash risotto. Also gonna put together a pulled-pork hash for breakfast tomorrow. Hadn’t really thought about it past that. What are you cooking Gary??

Oh p.s. If you have the chance, pick up a bottle of the Hetszolo Tokaj Late Harvest: I think it is their entry level sweet bottling. I picked up a 750ml of the 2006 for like 13 bones and it was an outstanding value. Not nearly as sweet as standard Tokaj; I thought it would be a good play with foie or cheeses, because it was very juicy and fresh–not sticky like some can be.

  • QOTD: Souped Up Soup! Saute` some celery, onion and carrots, add two cans of Campbell’s Chicken Noodle and one can of Campbell’s Cream of Mushroom (we get cases cheap at the plant store), leftover roasted chicken and spice it up. My wife has a sore throat and feels a little icky so that is what I am making right now.

It’s Canadian Thanksgiving this weekend so, of course, I will be eating turkey!

What to be thankful for: family, friends and one’s health – and a blessedly short Canadian federal election campaign (voting day is this Tuesday after the election’s being called early September).

Happy Thanksgiving to my fellow Canucks and Happy Columbus Day to those south of the border.

I have a couple bottles of the Hetszolo and can’t wait to try one.

Will probably be making gourmet pizza sometime this weekend, and maybe do some grilling in this gorgeous weather.

  • The Tres Cinco show! I am surprised they did so well but actually glad they did. I will definitely procur a couple bottles of the Tokay for Thanksgiving.

QOTD: Tonight I’m grillin’ baby back spare ribs and pairing it with a Worthy Cab. It’s been awhile since I’ve had one so it should be interesting.

Tomorrow night, I will be visiting my son in Salisbury, MD and will probably have a fish dish at a nice, upscale restaurant (for Salisbury) and then Sunday, salmon with an Oregon Pinot back home watching the games.

Have a great weekend and wish I could be there tomorrow. 🙁

    Cheers!

  • QOTD – It’s Canadian Thanksgiving, so I’m getting turkey, two kinds of stuffing, mashed potatoes and all sorts of other stuff. I will be STUFFED. I still haven’t had a dessert wine, so I’m gonna try to pick one up for the meal and make the family enjoy it.

  • QOTD: This Sunday will be fun because we are in the process of adding some new items to our regular menu and putting together our Luigi Bosca wine dinner for November. That means we’ll be coming up with a bunch of different dishes including a grilled bone-in pork chop probably with a some type of risotto…one of my favorite sides EVER!

I definitely will get down to hang out at the store one of the Saturdays you’re there over the next few weeks. Have a great weekend!
