Not sure about the short format with one wine, but love the way Gary translates Mott’s comments into what he was actually trying to say!

  • This kind of format I generally like much BETTER. What I mean by this kind of format is the teaching something new. These days I know quite a lot about wine, and early on I learned most of it from watching your show. However, lately I just don’t really learn much. And honestly, unless it’s a new region, I don’t really care much about your tasting note (unless I have the wine). I still watch all the time, but I’m not as excited about watching the show as I used to be because it doesn’t have as much actual content as I’d like. I don’t think that you need to do just one wine when you do this format (three is fine), but certainly discussing SOMETHING interesting about that wine (the region, the vintage, the history… there’s so much about every wine out there) would make me continue to watch for a long time. As it is now, I sometimes wonder why I watch every day…

QOTD: Probably the most interesting Rhone I’ve had recently is the 2000 Cave de Tain L’Hermitage Cornas les Nobles Rives. Yeah, it’s produced by a co-op, but I score it 92-93 points every time I have it (and still have 12 bottles left)! Delicious…

Gary & Chris, On the second look at this map on Wikipedia I see Lirac. It is very near but not the same area as Chateau Pesquie!!!!

  • I am one of those who has been gone but is returning. I missed the show!

I really like this format a lot. I am fascinated by the Lirac, and since we’re having a French-themed wine tasting for our group (WASTED, in Madison) this weekend, I’ll head out to look for some ASAP!

Sadly, my wine consumption has taken a dive due to finances, so I cannot answer the QOTD. I do have a bottle of mid-level CdP in my cellar that I haven’t touched yet…

QOTD 1: I’ve not been huge on Rhone wines in the past but have had a number of excellent and not necessarily pricy examples. One that sticks in my mind most is 2006 Domaine Pochon Crozes-Hermitage. Really excellent (I gave it 90 pts), and was on sale for £9.50 (so probably about $15 max in the US).

QOTD 2: I love this format. As someone who’s only recently been getting into wine (over the past 6-12 months or so), the information is really interesting and helpful too! I loved this show and hope there’ll be more like it in the future!

I like this format as well as the 2-3 bottles per show. While I think it is nice to have only 1 bottle and dive deeper into it, I also enjoy having a couple bottles of the same varietal to compare and contrast with… Either way, I like it. The show is free, I am not going to complain!

Funny just bought one last night…2004 Domaine LaFond Lirac La Ferme – haven’t opened it yet – it looked interesting!

QOTD: YES YES YES! I love when you interview people, but this “one on one” is very educational and knowledge is power! Keep up the good work!

Nice format, always up for learning more. I missed the sniffy sniff. My wife hates the sniffy sniff… she forbids any iteration of the term

I liked yesterday’s show, and I like this show. It’s nice to mix up the show styles. I’m sure that mixing it up makes it more interesting for you, and I think that it’s more interesting for the viewer. When I tune in, I never know what type of show I will get, and that adds an element of suspense to WLTV.

2003 Jean-Louis Chave St. Joseph, Offerus. I actually attended ,met, and got his autograph at a seminar he gave over his wines in Chagrin Falls, outside of Cleveland. There was room for only about forty people, all of whom, I’m sure , were there for tactical support of the minisule amounts being brought into our State. I bought Offerus, (partially purcased grapes) because the Estate L’Hermitages bottlings of Chave, all went for upwards of a couple hundred bucks/bottle. We tasted through several vintages, both red and white, including a decade old White Hermitage that exuded wafts of truffled honey. Incredible. I was very fortunate to work at a place where we’d get first crack at the ridiculously small amounts of wines like these which would trickle through, including an occasional bottle or two of Cuvee Cathelin, which is the type of thing which, by virtue of it’s disappointing and criminally small supply, would always lead to top customers bitching about who’s the most deserving customer- what a fucking headache that was.

I really like the JL Chave C-D-R, Mon Couer, too. Deeper, Earthier, and darker than the average CDR.

I was so jazzed to see this show. I just bought and drank last week a Domaine du Joncier Lirac Cru des Cotes du Rhone 2005. It was delicious! I had never had one before, but I am trying to expand my palate without breaking my wallet and while I don’t remember exactly how much, I feel that is was under $15.
I love when you teach us something about an area as well as about the wine, but I also enjoy the variety of the formats.
Looking forward to the election surprise pack, never bought a surprise pack before, but I am sure you will not disappoint.

  • Tim C

Gary – I would like to see you do a series of shows that highlighted what you thought were the best wines of a given varietal in a given price point. For example a show could be on Petite Syrah and you could walk us through the best of this type under $10, $10-$20, and above $20. This would give your audience a chance to explore the best of a wine and find value that matches their palates. Love the show!

Awesome show wish i could get it here.
Love the info on cellering and pairing tips
    Way to go !!!

This is the winelib tv i know and love.

QOTD Never had a rhone variety 🙁

THANKS FOR THE E-MAIL, BIG G! It’s GREAT to be back, and if you notice, I didn’t skip any episodes, I just commented VERY late. Finally got caught up after my trip to Europe which included a visit to Chateauneuf du Pape where I DID consume much Lirac, and had a GREAT value Lirac back here at home over the weekend- You read my mind. BUT:

QOTD: Along with Lirac, I have discovered another southern Rhone wine that became an official AC in 2005: Vinsobres. Great value, earthy, spicy, north of Chateauneuf, Vaqueras, and Gigondas, and Northeast of Orange. Perrin’s 2004 is drinking really well now, the 2005 is great as well as the 2006 but it’s a little tight at the moment. I mention Perrin’s because it might be more widely available. PLEASE DO A VINSOBRES EPISODE SOON!

Really liked the one wine format, especially when you discuss the wine and region in detail. It’s great to learn something new. Very interesting show today. Thanks!

QOTD 1: haven’t had a Rhone yet… my first and only French wine has been the Lalande de Pomerol. But now I’m hooked and want to explore them all!!

QOTD 2: I love the educational aspect and time allotment with having 1 wine, but still love to see you do comparisons. So, my request would be to have the variety.. but more importantly, I think YOU’d need the variety, Gary. You’d get bored really quickly with just one style… way to constricting to your creativity! lol

QOTD 1: I have had good luck with wines from Vacqueyras (also in the $15 range), particularly the 2004 and 2005 Domaine La Garrigue Vacqueyras.

QOTD 2: I like the format and the wine education / information, but I think you should try 2-3 wines from the same region.

I liked this format — thought maybe people will think this is lame I would like to see you mix it up by tasting several wines from the same region when going over what makes wines characteristic of that region. I love more information though — keep it up.
