Not sure about the short format with one wine, but love the way Gary translates Mott’s comments into what he was actually trying to say!

QOTD1: I’m a huge fan of Rhone wines. Recently I’ve enjoyed wines from Vinsobres, Gigondas, Vacqueyras, and yes….Lirac. I only have one Lirac bottle in the cellar right now, 2005 Lirac, Chateau de Segries, Henri de Lanzac.

I don’t drink CdP or Cornas (spell?), $$$.

QOTD2: I like the education. That’s why I’m here!! I learn something from all of the shows, short or long.

    Go Phillies. Go Penn State.

  • Jay

The 2004 Perrin Vacqueyras was sensational!

Thanks for the show Gary. I really liked the 1 wine with a little more knowledge behind it. Keep up the secret packs since they have been an absolute blast. I keep having friends over to taste them and it is always great.

We love to smell and taste the wine before watching you and going around to see what we all smell/taste. It is always funny since none of us ever get everything, but as a team we get everything you say. It is really a great time.

    Good show!

I love learning, and therefore think the new format is effective. Getting data on lesser known regions is important and fun.

The last Rhône wine I’ve had was Château Signac Combe d’Enfer Côtes du Rhône Villages 2005. Good stuff. Ready to drink, well rounded, good fruit though not over the top.

Looking forward to the coming shows…Cheers

I like the idea of a mix of longer shows (like on Monday about 30 min.) and then shorter more focused shows like today.

  • I like this type of format though it falls to 2nd since I like the same varietal from different regions the best.

QOTD: I have tried the Grand Veneur and it was quite good.

    Cheers!

  • I like the one wine format. Maybe not for everyday. But 3 to 4 days of the week it would be great! Definitely laid back Friday. Maybe a 3 wine tasting on Mondays and then whatever you’re feeling the rest of the week.

Love the new format, very informative. Maybe do the 1 wine show all week and then a more less informative with more wine on a Friday for the weekend??? Just a thought… Keep hustling and i feel your pain about the Jets being a huge Red Sox fan im quite crushed!

I like the shorter format more — especially when you cover an area I don’t know much about.

Had an ’05 (I think) Saint Cosme CdR recently — was pretty good value.

Yeah, I opt for the informational shows but I want them in the 25-30 minute range 🙂 What the hell, are you trying to become a slacker at only 32???????

QOTD: I’m going to give you one that I DIDN’T get from you and it comes from today’s location: 05 ? Lirac Alain Jaume ?Clos de Sixte?, Rhone. It actually qualifies as a transitional wine because I was ready to give up on Rhone wines until I came accross this. My first bottle showed me that the region could produce very good wine and while I will enjoy the remaining two bottles more after 2009 it made me open to exploring more of the region. Thanks to you, I am super hot on Southern France now and as you said they are a HUGE QPR center.

did not like the one wine episode more wines

    Thanks for every thing

  • You know, both of the more interesting (non Chateauneuf) Rhone wines I’ve had in the last six months were under $20 a bottle – one was under $15.

First was the 1995 E. Guigal Cotes du Rhone. Apparently, whoever’s running Guigal’s winery found either a bunch of cases or a barrel that was long forgotten and turned out to be the ’95 CdR a couple years ago. I bought a couple for about $17 apiece. Here’s my tasting note, from May of this year:

“It’s amazing that a Cotes du Rhone can actually age and evolve as this has. The wine took about an hour in the decanter to open up, and then gave off a beautiful bouquet of red and white soft flowers, black pepper, a bit of sour cherry, and cedar. On the palate, a nice and soft sour cherry, with black pepper, backed by vegetal flavors of carrot, carrot top, parsnip, and celery. Also a bit of forest floor on the palate. The finish is long-lived for a CdR, at about 20-30 seconds, and is well balanced. This is a bargain if you can find it now – very few people would give a 13 year old CdR a chance. Get it if you can!”

The second wine was one bought recently that surprised me with an element of Fig Newtons (remember those?), the 2004 Domaine du Pesquier CdR. Dirt cheap and not bad. Here’s my note:
“Nose: Definitely Rhone, with black/blue fruit, blackcurrant, and a strong fig component, earthiness, a bit of sage/kitchen spice, with a hint of mocha. Smooth, natural, and nice.

Palate: Not life-changing, but good nonetheless. Medium(-) bodied, with blue/black fruit, some licorice (the real thing, not twizzlers), again a fig component but not as sweet, and a bit of wood taste on a background of a bit of black pepper and earth. The only big downside is that the midpalate is less than exceptional, but what a minor qualm overall for a wine at this price.

Finish: The finish is fairly short but evolves as it leaves the mouth over 10-20 secs and is nice.

A good CdR that?s a lot different from others I?ve had from the same vintage, including Guigal. This is a bit more new world than some CdR?s I?ve had, and less so than some others. I just love how unique different wines can be from this region at the same price point. 88-, and a great deal.”

Now there’s some good ol’ long tasting notes for ya.

Love the format. I really enjoy getting that knowledge dropped on me and going in depth about a single wine. The multi-wine shows are fun but I think I prefer this format.

I like this format as an alternative. I do like the shows that cover 3-4 wines as well, so I’d hate to give those up, but this is a welcome addition to that format.

QOTD – St. Cosme CdR. 100% Syrah – fantastic wine year in, year out.

    Gary,

I really like the one-wine, data-rich format of this show. Often, I find I’m missing WL episodes due to time constraints 🙁

Also, doing a shorter format show might give you some flexibility allowing you to do two or three on days you’re rollin’ but allow you to slack a bit whenever your Jets are doing poorly…

    Twitter on my brotha,

  • Gary, I have not had many Rhone wines at all, but in due time! I love your show and all the formats. I like variety, but I really love the educational aspect of all your shows. I am not an expert by any means so I love to learn new stuff!

I think the one wine format is ok. Personally I like variety, keep mixing things up! One wine, cheese day, pickle day, sausage day, mezcal day, six wines double blind, laid back Friday, live from Walla Walla (hint hint).

Rhone wine? I can’t remember? Times are tough, right now I’m drinking Stimson Estate Cellars 2004 Merlot. At less than $9.00 for a magnum it is a great pizza wine! Too bad I do not have any pizza right now. Find me another wine that is even drinkable at that price. I bet you can get a case for under $50.

I splurged some last week and found a great wine for Mott to try. Gianni Gaguardo Villa M Filtrato Dolce Moscato. This bottle is always one of the first to be empty at any party. They must be kidding! 13% alc. ??

Also thank you for getting Charles Smith on the show. Picked up his 2006 BOOM BOOM SYRAH. YUM!! The Australian economy may be in trouble now.

Like the format, in that more time is spent exploring and educating, but I wouldn’t forego trying two or three wines if they were available. I’m curious about this, and I’ll pick it up next time I’m up that way.
