line of the day – ‘there’s a million rules [in wine], and they’re all wrong’

Always difficult for a guest with very little knowledge of wine to come on and not make a fool of themselves, but this one did okay by being honest and not agreeing with everything gary said.

One comment from Gary made me laugh. he said he swirls all liquids in his mouth, ‘water, milk, everything’. I’ve found myself doing the same, and in fact, I can’t drink anything without swirling. Makes you appear a weirdo, but it’s fun

Don’t care nuttin about baseball, Hi Sasha!

  • great show as always, and it’s even better through iTunes (better quality, I think). QOTD: Mets need a year where they are not close, and 2009 could be that year. Give Manual until year 2 before you put him out on the street.

  • Griz4life

Mets will again be the 2nd best team in the NL East, but I do think Manuel did a great job until game 140 reared its ugly head…

    Fun episode; nice-looking guest.
Gary seemed exceedingly relaxed and happy, which is great to see.

Good work Tara, though you didn’t say your name, and it took awhile (We’re not all big sports fans). The first wine prob. sucked cause Palomino is no good for winemaking. It oxidizes too easily, among other attributes, which make it ideal for sherry making,(in a long and drawn out ageing process). Years ago, even the great Kent Rosenblum couldn’t make his white blend withstand any shelf life , and in the years suspected, I hold the Palomino responsible. GV, Spare yourself, and us a predictably weak Palomino show. Finally, after 10 months of WLTV, you’ve stumped me! Pecorino’s the first varietal you’ve done, which I’ve had no experience with. Congratulations! It sounds good. Grenache Blanc also, should remain (ideally) a little more to the background, rather than making a varietal wine by itself. With hundreds of years’ optimal use as a blending grape, it is best used to adjust for deficits in other varietals in varying vintages. It’s important to know that there’s nothing wrong, or ignoble with blending, contrary to what many scotch drinkers, for example, might (wrongly) believe. The work of the wine (or malt whisky) blender is of primary importance in Rhone, Bordeaux, and other heritage sites!

Gary. Love the show! But please, if you’re going to pronounce corvina correctly, you must say Amarone the only way an Italian or anyone else should pronounce it.- Ah mah rone ay!(with the rolled “r” that you almost have down) Please! You are way too cool to not do this right!P.S. Am aronie actually hurts my ears. Thanks. Gerry Mantovani. P.S.S I have family on Lago di Garda. Nice place! They sell amarone at the campgounds.

G…your Dad is a Playa!! Seriously, he commands the room. Love the Italian whites, too. To me they are one the best and most interesting whites out there.

QOTD: Cubs fan here, so don’t know much about the Mets. I liked Jerry Manuel when he was with the White Sox. Completely different Mgr. than who we have now in Ozzie Guillen.

Great show!!! I am excited to try some Pecorino.

QOTD: The Mets will get knocked-out of the playoffs, on the last game of the season, by the Florida Marlins for the third year in a row.

Good episode, but you should have told us who she is. Took some digging to figure it out.

QOTD: I don’t follow baseball. Sorry.

  • I’m getting some Pecorino ASAP. Sounds too good not to try.

QOTD: As an honest Mets fan, I hope to hell that they can break away from the choke factor. Do they make the playoffs next year??? Yes. And as for Manuel, we could do worse. I’m still not sold.

  • Johnnyutah

QOTD: Only if they bring back Carter behind the plate!

QOTD: id like to think the mets could make it to the playoffs but i think the pitching does not have the depth to make it late in the year as shown by the last 2yrs.

  • Gary – I understand completely about the swishing. I catch myself doing it with iced tea and go “what am I doing?!”, it’s ridiculous. But I have to remind myself that its not a habit for most people, and at the wine bar I work at, I am constantly preaching its virtues, along with the sniffy sniff. You should absolutely not pay $15 a glass for any wine if you aren’t going to breathe it in first and then coat your entire palette with it. Nice to see some love for your pops today.

QOTD: Three hours after watching the Phillies win it all, I’d have to say its the end of an era for the New York Metropolitans as Steve Somers calls them.
