I love Bierzo wines! A favorite of mine is Palacio de Canedo – Maceración. I also enjoy Cuatro Pasos as mentioned below! As a Spanish teacher just sharing a pronunciation point: Bierzo is pronounced “Bee air so” (or “Bee air tho” with Castillian accent).

Thanks for the interesting and always entertaining episodes!

QOTD: Bacon and shrooms, nothing better.

  • Adam J

Awesome show, always love to find a good QPR.
QOTD: I love going purist with some good olive oil and maybe some tomatoes and oregano. But some anchovies thrown on would be very much welcome! Thanks for the show!

  • NICE Bierzo! finally.

I like the Pittacum Bierzo line of wines, they are earthy and not as alcoholic as you might think from the label.

    QOTD:
Oh man, I put everything on pizza: potatoes, chicken, artichokes, ham, salami, pepperoni, peppers, fish, porchetta, lobster, nutella, sausage, all kinds of cheese, eggs, lettuce, dried tomatoes, fresh tomatoes, olives, raisins, nuts, although not all of them together of course.

    Good show.

  • I gotta say, Gary V., this episode right after the Other 46 one kind of hurts. It’s just so obvious that most of America is so far away from making an 89 point 8 dollar bottle of wine that it’s not even funny. What are they doing wrong?

QOTD: I like a good white pizza once in a while, but here’s where it’s at – soppressata salami. Its like pepperoni, but way better. I’ve found some great pairings with a soppressata pizza in South Africa and Chile.

QOTD: I remember answering this question before. I must have been watching too long. For me, it’s all about pepperoni, even though I try to pretend that the tomato, green chili, bell peppers are an important part of the mix. A little cilantro as a garnish doesn’t hurt.

  • Great show. Its always nice and rare that all three wines bring thunder to the table. Excellent values, for sure.
For all you S. Ca. folks, the Descendientes can be found at the Orange County Wine Exchange- Winex.com. $17.95 also.

    Your welcome.

    Nice show Gary,

I never heard of Bierzo before. I need to do my homework on that 😀

QOTD: my favourite pizza (and I ve lived in Italy for a year and tried about 50 different kinds)is a DELICIOUS version of the 4 seasons, aka quattro stagioni.

(on a super thin crust, add a base of tomato spread accross the dough with some ricotta cheese and a few slices of mozarella. Add cooked and slightly grilled ham, mushrooms, fresh chunks of artichoke and black olives.) with olive oil !

It is amazing with and a Glass of Turriga (Sardinian IGT wine)

    LAMB EATER!!

Sorry, it sounded kind of like an insult, so I had to try it out.

QOTD: Pretty much anything except pineapple. If the tomato sauce is toned down or olive oil is used, even better!

I’m a big fan of Mencia. I got into it at a wine bar when I had a bottle from Ribeira Sacra made by Adegas Moure (http://www.cellartracker.com/wine.asp?iWine=393954). I thought The Pilgrimage was alright. The Palacios was awesome, got that one from my favorite local wine shop. The Adegas Moure was still the best.

Have you had the Baloiro by Bodega Luzdivina Amigo? They have that at my local wine shop too.

Qotd: Thin crust, Italian sausage, and green pepper. That’s the best!

Another great show! The only Bierzo I’ve had is the Petalos, which I loved. I want to look for others sometime.

QOTD: Thin crust, fresh tomato sauce (but not too much), good cheese, a bit of olive oil, garlic, mushrooms. I’m not a big fan of meat on pizza.
