line of the day – (talking about people who don’t try new things) ‘I’ve got a customer in New Jersey, she drank 836 cases of Santa Margerita Pinot Grigio and it makes me throw up in my mouth’

Gary in tremendous form – hamming it up in front of a live audience. Great stuff

Have not found one that I like yet.

Obviosly, this lady hadn’t seen the ball since the kick-off with regards to her own products….ODD. You were most gracious on this one. Always good to get your perspective on all your efforts.

QOTD – not big on dessert wines outside a good Port. can’t beat a good port with some stinkin’ cheese. When can we expect a Port show?? thx GV!

Great dessert wine? A beerenauslese, or a TBA if you really want to splurge. Instead of the typical pairing with something like stilton, try them with a smoother cheese like a Bavarian Blu or Cambozola. Even a spatlese riesling with some residual sugar (Rhein not Mosel–the sugar levels are different), is a great dessert pairing with these cheeses. And a lot cheaper than the BAs and TBAs.

Trust me, guys, great for Valentine’s. Plus cheese for dessert is easier and more refined than making a dessert.

This was a fun little episode. Those people seemed very nice and homey, with a little southern charm thing going on there. Very cool.

QOTD: a little dessert wine every once in a while is fun. It’s probably best over ice cream.

QOTD: I have to admit, being newer to wine, I like the sweet dessert wines and port.

Also glad to see the Chambourcin grape making its debut on the Thunder Show. Seems like it is grown all over here in Southern Illinois.

QOTD: I enjoy the stickies here and there. I’d have to say that German BA and TBA’s along with Tokaj are my favorites to drink at the moment. Thanks for the show!

QOTD: I do like dessert wines, but my favorite would be a crisp, acidic, dry riesling.

That looked like a fun show to do. Fun watching thanks!

I like late harvest and port type wines but haven’t had many white dessert wines for a long time. The whole Gewurztraminer craze of the late 80’s turned me off. ( at least I thought there was a craze, ha ha)

    Lovely picture in the background.

  • Had a bit of a deja vu with this ep.
Was it Ustreamed (maybe from off to Gary’s right) back in the fall?

I really don’t like the idea of giving rating scores while tasting next to the proprietor. Brutal for both of you, and seems totally unnecessary.

QOTD: My favorite wine changes as I continue to try new wines. Currently the wine that I find the most interesting is Chateau Musar Rouge from Lebanon. However, I have had some phenominal dessert wines…and I do love them when they are done right.

QOTD: Like dessert wine…love pineau de charentes but not sure if you would count that as a dessert wine (cognac and grape juice …mmmmmm) and like the ports also.

  • I’ve never had any Pennsylvania wines, must seek them out.

QOTD: my favorite is not a dessert wine but I like them quite a bit. Icewine and Sauternes mostly but also some sweet Mexican wines, they’re something else.

I don’t think I’ve come across the balance of sugar and acid that is “just right” for me, so, no dessert wines are not my favorite, usually they are a bit too much on the syrupy side for me.

Haven’t had a sauternes, I’m too afraid to spend that much money with my track record for not greatly enjoying the sweet stuff.

Very Fun show! Loved it! Lots of laughs. Love to learn about local winery’s, love that they get their shot in the limelight. I like dessert wine but find by dessert I may need to stop wine altogether and go for the coffee. :OP

Being from Philly, and having tried most of the “good” wineries in PA, I was super psyched to see you review a PA winery…you just picked the wrong one. The best PA winery, by FAR, is Va La Vineyards in Avondale, PA (about 45 min west of Philly). They actually produce 88-90 point reds and 90+ whites (IMHO) that can compete, flavor-wise, with the bigger names in Cali…the price points are just too high.

You mentioned you’ve had Chaddsford Wine and, by volume, they are the largest selling Pennsylvania winery. Unfortunately, they, much like Eagle Rock, produce mostly overpriced Bogle/Barefoot level wines. Paradocx and Va La are the two best PA producers and they should definitely be on your radar.

QOTD: Late Harvest Riesling changed my wine life.

Anyone have an error on their iPod with this episode?
‘Was not copied because it cannot be played on this iPod’ – very weird as I’ve been downloading and watching them on this for 200+ episodes.

I like the tour of east-coast wineries. That should be a series, PA wines, NJ wines, NY wines both long island and fingerlakes.

I do enjoy the sweets when the are made well, good balance of sweetness and acidity.

  • Very good show!

QOTD: Yes, I totally agree with Gary.
I once had a canadian ice wine (my first one – can’t rememer the name) that was well made, delicious in the initial atack, but a little short in acidity. And when that happens, it makes me sick if I have more than one glass.
I think it is fundamental to find the balance the sugar/acid balance.

It is one of the reasons I am always a little afraid of buying dessert wines … they’re are often overpriced and often turns out to be a disappointment.

The desert wine sounds good – it’s neat just to see creative winemaking like that.

Cabernet sauvignon in Penn? That alone is impressive.

Great episode! I was wondering when we’d see an episode dedicated to the Northeast! That Kiss wine sounds VERY intriguing!
