line of the day – (talking about people who don’t try new things) ‘I’ve got a customer in New Jersey, she drank 836 cases of Santa Margerita Pinot Grigio and it makes me throw up in my mouth’

Gary in tremendous form – hamming it up in front of a live audience. Great stuff

QOTD: The East Coast does make some delicious dessert wines. I am on my way to Alba Winery in the Dirty Jerz to pick up a few bottles of their Apple wine made from Tewksbury apples—and I’m not a big fan of dessert wine.

It has been a while since you have rocked the “whether they like it or not”, and it’s good to see it return. Awesome show, great showing by the two wines ready to drink now, and with that you can’t complain.

Awesome episode. How come such a delay in posting it? 🙂

  • Gary, you have to brine your turkey so that I will not be dry. Any chef worth his salt will tell you that. BTW, still waiting for you to come down to the hills near North Georgia to try some wine from the peach state.

  • Wow, they really loved you in P that day. Those embarrassed laughers in the back… top bananas!

qotd: not specifically… mainly because nobody I usually drink wine with likes them. Every now and then, though, that sweetness is just marvelous.

I loved how the only two players you named were former Steelers. QOTD: I can’t say there is a specific color or varietal that I like the best.

I occasionally enjoy a dessert wine, though probably not more than 4 or 5 bottles a year. My favorites have been the late harvest Rieslings and Gewurtztraminers from Anderson Valley (Handley, Greenwood Ridge, Navarro), as they generally have enough acidity to balance the sugar. Rosenblum also makes a great lineup of dessert wines.

  • For Beau Mitall,
Yes, Kanu still makes a dessert wine called Kia Ora. And Mulderbosch just released a dessrt Sauvignon Blanc (NLH) this year. Both delish.

Whew! Glad that last wine came through. Tough to go on location and diss
all their wines. But then again ya gotta call it like you see it.

QOTD: Huge dessert wine fan – Sauternes, Port, NYS/Canada ice wines. But
they have their place. Certainly wouldn’t say they are my favorite.

GV, you were in my back yard in November and I didn’t even know! What a bummer! Great show, thanks for bringing back the horrible reminder of the Nittany Lions loss to Iowa, I was just now getting over it! Quite surprised that your guest was so unprepared though. Oh well you held your own.

QOTD: Not my favorites, but I enjoy a glass of port or Late Harvest Zinfandel on a regular basis

  • Wow, balsy move by the winery. I’ll have to say that they (the winery) grossly underestimated this opportunity. The Blueberry juice that was SO important will never capatilize over what this opportunity could have provided. The person who knows the most and is the best spokesperson should have sat in that chair. Guest, I love you but you guys needed someone that knew the wine and could successfully defended/educated us on the wine.

Now, I am glad the dessert wine showed well. That may have saved you, I would love for you to succeed.

QOTD: Love the dessert wines but not my fave.

QOTD: Dessert wines are nice, but I’ll always take a really dry, crisp, vibrant sparkler with some body as my go-to wine because I can drink that style by itself or with most lighter foods ANY day, any occasion.

  • Obviously a huge fan of the other 46 states and always enjoy your episodes!

QOTD: Love dessert wines, especially from Virginia!

The artwork display made for one of the most elegant shows in recent memory – and the winemaker was very gracious to accept pretty strong criticism of the red wine without protest.

QOTD – I like them all, but madeira wins, hands down.

  • Sounds like you had fun there. And yeah, I finally brined the turkey this past Thanksgiving and it was sooooo good. Not dry in the slightest. Victor was right.

QOTD: I appreciate a well-made dessert wine that has a balance of acidity and sugar, but I can’t say it’s my favorite category. I can’t stand any dessert wine that’s syrupy sweet. Blech!

I’m not sure what to say about this show. I know the wines were “meh” at best except for the dessert wine and, as we all know, it is difficult to make a BAD dessert wine because everyone, at least in America, is seduced by the sweet stuff. Trying a single winery from Pennsylvania was definitely bold. I’d invite you to do the same for Ohio or Michigan. I think they can do better.

QOTD: My favorite wine is NOT dessert wine, but my favorite dessert wine is definitely a ruby Port.

QOTD: No. I cannot find the delicious factor in a dessert wine. Too sweet for my palate. I like appetizers not desserts.

    fyi I’ve been to Williamsport

  • QOTD: Not too crazy about the desert wines. I enjoy them, but give me a dry, complex, balanced, medium bodied red any day! (well…. that or some good PS!)

Gary…. love the episode! I got a bit behind in them so i am trying to catch up by watching at work on my lunch and some ‘thunder’ has been spreading in the workplace!

QOTD: Don’t like them when they’re cloying/lacking acidity, I was lucky enought to try a small amount of Baixas D’Agly Rivesaltes 1969, nuts and caramel for dayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyys.
