line of the day – ‘grandma in the kitchen with her mayonnaise face’

Really interesting episode that highlights how much wines can change when paired with food. This is a landmark show for me as I think it was the first one I ever saw. I watched a few after this one but then went back to the beginning of the archive and have just caught up to where it all started. Still loads to see, which is great, but not sure what I’m going to do for kicks when I get to the end!

  • Much better background and good show. I like it.

Grenache is good stuff esp when the Aussies mix it up with Syrah and Mouvedre.

QOTD: This qotd was asked not too long ago but my answer this time will be 1) Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups 2) Cadbury Eggs and 3) plain old Hershey Bar.

    Happy Valentines to all!

    Cheers!

QOTD: Every Christmas, my Dutch uncle Hans would give me a big chocolate letter T (from “Sinterklaas” of course). I think the brand is Droste and its an excellent chocolate.

Favorite candybar would have to be Toblerone.

    solid episode…..wine trivia + under-appreciated varietal + multi-country showdown + food = WLTV excellence

QOTD: the darkest, bitterest(?) stuff i can find

also, the dark chocolate with orange bits in it = greatness.

A tip about Australian wines: If it says it’s from “South East Australia”, as the Marquis Phillips did, it’s almost guaranteed to be bad. That usually means it was made from river fruit, the sort of stuff that goes into box wine.

Gary, sometimes we agree on a wine and sometimes we don’t. HOWEVER, we are in lock step on the ENO with your description/opinion of that wine. I think that we were both expecting much more (kinda thinkin Eaglepoint Petit Sirah). The only thing is that I would give it an 85.

QOTD: Lindt Intense Orange or Mayan Gold

Gary, I appreciate the knowledge you put into your shows. I did notice in this episode that you said the French wine was “from the Vin de Pays”. As far as I know, VdP is a legal status indicator, like AOC, and not a place. I know these are more general regions than the AOC counterparts, and I think there is one now that encompasses the entire country, but I think the term after VdP (d’Oc, etc) is the important part. I have heard someone say “from the Vin de Pays region” before and I assume it is people’s attempt to simplify the French wine label for Americans. I think it is confusing to use the term Vin de Pays as if it alone designated an area and that it doesn’t help Americans to understand anything. I’m not saying you used the term in that way intentionally; I just wanted to point it out. You might not have meant it that way, anyway, but it seemed as if you might have. Thank you very much for all of the great shows.

qotd: There’s a small chocolatier in Kittery, Maine called Cacao. They make so many great chocolates that I can’t choose just one. There is something they do with balsamic vinegar that’s great.

Not bad on the wines, sounds like the Marquis is definitely too “down under” for me.
QOTD: I would have to say the Dagoba Eclipse, which is 87% cocoa, extremely dark, but just the way I like! 🙂

PS: Happy valentines day to you and Liz, Gary.

  • Happy Valentine’s Day! Thanks for another great show. It’s appreciated. I still love the way Jorge Ordonez says grenache, with that accent. I personally don’t pair up wine and chocolate.

PS- I thought you were going to keep the set turned around and I’m a little disappointed that you have not mentioned much of anything about the current state of our JETS. Tell your parents I said happy anniversary, and I hope Lizzy is doing well!

QOTD: I like the little pieces of Hershey’s Special Dark, but if we’re talking candy bars it has to be the SKOR bar.

Ha! that was a generous portion of chocolate you gave the Mottster LOL.

hey I just changed the Wikipedia for you. Grenache now IS the most widely planted red wine grape in the world! AHAHAHA the power, THE POWER!!!!!!!

qotd; Oh snap, as far as Industrial candy, its a ho down between Twix and the good ol Peppermint Paddy! but nothing beats a nice slab of Swiss, Bavarian, or Belgian milk chocolate. Here’s a fun fact, chocolate is absoultly the best way to preserve milk.

QOTD: I don’t know that I could pick a favorite, as I love different chocolates for different reasons. I would however say that dark chocolate brownies are close to heaven!

QOTD: Best in the world, hands down. Belgian. I really like Leonidas chocolates (available here in the States through their website). Cote D’Or dark with hazelnuts is heaven. Trader Joe’s has a very nice dark with almonds. They also have chocolate covered blueberries that are fantastic. Best friut and chocolate combo is raspberries with dark chocolate.

and the best dessert ever is a Chocolate Souffle

    I am a chocoholic

  • HUGE fan of turning people on to different wines / varietals, especially when you can try them with pairings like chocolate – does it get any better? Ok, maybe with cheese. Or steak. Or pizza. I could go on all night…

QOTD: My favorite chocolate is Ghirardelli 60% cacao dark chocolate with caramel filling

  • Great episode. No doubt one of the more insightful, informative commentaries on pairings. QOTD: Dagoba Organic Chocolate – Dark Chocolate Xcocolatl Bar (74% Cocoa) with Chili, Cacao Nibs, Nutmeg, Vanilla. Spicy chocolate is unbeatable.
