EP 639 2 Rueda’s and a Montepulciano

Gary Vaynerchuk tries 2 white wines from Spain and talks about a wine that crushed him over the weekend.

Wines tasted in this episode:

2007 J&f Lurton Rueda WhiteRueda
2007 El Perro Verde RuedaRueda
2004 Barone Cornacchia Montepulciano D’abruzzo Le CosteMontepulciano d’Abruzzo

line of the day – ‘this wine is very one-dimensional, and that dimension is water…and danger’

I find myself enjoying Gary’s asides, winks, frowns and general facial expressions almost more than the content these days. He was asking a lot of the Mottster to identify differences between the same wines opened at different times, and Mott duly appeared all at sea…poor Mott. Also a funny slapstick ending. Classic

    • Gary,

That was the very first Wine Library TV episode I have ever seen and I absolutely loved it. I don’t drink wine and I don’t know the first thing about wine and I still loved the show.

I wanted to thank you for giving me a little love the other day in an email. I submitted my name and info to Obsessed TV saying that I was an up and comer and you should watch for me in a couple of years. You hit me back with a quick note of encouragement. I want you to know that meant a lot to me. When your starting something from scratch and you are gambling your future and your family’s future on something that you believe in but have no proof will work, you have moments of doubt. Your email came at the perfect time to pull me out of one of those moments and get me back on the hustle.

I will make it, and we will talk some day.

      Take care,

      Josh

    • Gary great episode I am trying to catch up. The last bit of the show where you are pouring out that bottle and waving is EPIC lolz 🙂

      QOTD:
-I am into brewing my own beers and also my video blog rating craft beers http://www.sudsorduds.com The vino gets a chance every now and then when I am not in the mood for beer though 🙂

    • Hey Mr. GV
Thanks for yet a great show, on my favorite subject

QOTD: (First, thanks for asking) I still work in the wine business in Denmark (Retail by day, hosting tastings and lectures by night). I/We have just wrapped up the local one-day wine-festival, with just under one thousand happy visitors. I hold tastings several times a week, across the country – in recent time the Danes are very in to Australian wines – so I’m beginning to get a bit tired of talking about that – but on the other hand, there seems to be coming more and more interesting wines from the Western-territory, so suddenly Australia is exciting again. 😉 (Have you had any recently?)
Other than that we are preparing to re-open our store in our new facilities – it will be one of the largest wine-shops in all of DK.
Personally I am, as always, heavily in to champagne, which is sort of my specialty (In the age of just 19, I am already acknowledged as sort of a authority within the subject, among some of the local “grand-old-wine-men”). But I don’t know if my passion for the bubbles can match yours though – it might just 😀 Besides champs, southern France has really caught my attention at the moment – just had a Cht.neuf that blew me away: clos du Caillou Reserve 04′

Again thanks for asking and thanks for the legendary shows!

Great call on the D ‘ abruzzo. Have always been a big fan of the Cantina
Zaccagnini D’abruzzo but always thought of them (like you) as simpler
starter wines (start the big Italian meal off with). Also a fan of Rueda
as well. Haven’t found a 90 pointer yet but now I’ll also be searching
      for the Perro.

QOTD: Just got a great deal recently on a 260 bottle Eurocave. As result
I am all over the board with my buying trying to fill it.

There are some brilliant wines in Italy just off the beaten path, aren’t there?

QOTD: My yard. We bought a new house in November, and I’ve spent many hours outside trying to shape up a 15,000 sq ft property that was ignored almost completely for two years, and based on some of the growth, a lot longer than that. But I go out at 6 AM, so everything has to be done with hand tools, so I don’t wake up the neighbors.

My scene these days is spending time with my wife and two wonderful daughters. In my spare time I really enjoy learning about wine and wine making, watching movies and trying to keep up with technology by listening to podcasts and checking out gv.com and researching. One of the most important lessons I pick up from WLTV is to expand your palate and get the people that you know to put down the Yellow Tail and drink some god damn Zweigelt.

    • Another awesome show!

QOTD: I am into my family, taking care of my kids by day, and spending as much time with friends, and family, drinking wine and learning as much as I can about everything. Life should be FUN!

    • Man, Gary, I gotta get me some of that ’07 J&F Lurton!

I have to tell you, I keep a lookout for the stuff you ABSOLUTELY DESPISE and then seek it out to see how disparate palettes are.

QOTD: My scene is WRITING. I’m trying to be more prolific here, but I write for my own blog, freelance, SEO/SEM stuff and am starting up a wine website for the economically challenged.

      Great show today!

Great show, I love that you can find the wines like Montepulciano d’Abruzzo that bring thunder, I thought Citra and Bolla were all that was out there!

QOTD: Beginning career in the wine world, working on competing in state and national amateur golf tournaments, as well as tasting and enjoying as much awesome wine as I can!

My scene on a daily basis is forensic in nature. Currently my passions are moving around and readjusting themselves. I’ve been getting into wine for what seems like years, but I finally feel like I really mean it.

I’m about to turn 40 (you hooked me up in Porto – big time!) which is a cause for reflection and focus. I’m starting to ride my road bike. Luckily Woodinville, WA (wineries) is only 10 miles from my house and always makes a good destination. We’re planning some bike rides for the Yakima Wine Country for later in the year with a hope we can do a Sonoma wine ride and eventually get back to Italy to pedal through the Tuscan wine country.

Ironically, with all the wine talk, I’m having a bit of Scotch right now.

I really liked how you tasted wine after 48 hours and compared it to a new bottle. Since I’m up early in the mornings, I often have to let a bottle breathe another night and always wonder how it will hold up. And then when finishing it wonder if I remember correctly from the night before. I’m currently watching your podcasts from my iPod during lunch. I think I’m due to download another one. If only the archived episodes were still in iTunes.

i will definitely have to find that montepulciano, but that will be impossible because in australia apparently they either: a) don’t import wine in the first place, b) don’t sell imported wines, or c) sell them at hidden stores with outrageously marked up prices. oh well, australian wines only then.

qotd: my current scene involves getting used to living in this aforementioned foreign continent- i’m studying for the semester in sydney’s western suburbs rather than at my my usual university of wisconsin. i’m still trying tons of new wines, including my first australian petit sirah yeseterday (’07 de bortoli vat 1 durif…meh). however i’m still focusing on finishing my undergraduate work in politics and geography next year, continuing to play jazz piano, and remaining stubbornly unpretentious about my usually pretentious scene, and getting tons of inspiration from gary on that front.

Go Mott! You should bring Mott more on the show every once in a while. In fact, you should do an ep with a bunch of people from WL sometime.

QOTD: My wife and I are going to start a food garden this year. We have a half acre, so plenty of room, but a lot of work. We would really like to also start supporting sustainable agriculture and local trade this year.

I’m into MN viticulture. This year will be my first crop of Frontenac and Marquette. That’s if the weather does not destroy the new growth or hasn’t already. I am really interested in taking viticulture and wine making classes, too bad the UofM doesn’t offer an explicit degree (or is even close enough anyway).

      Hey Gary great show!!!

what I am into wine wise right now is central otago. Was just down there barrel sampling at Mt. Difficulty, Felton Road, and many others and their pinots are phenomenal. but we should all know that by now…. what really has amazed me is some of the reislings down there, very comparable to Clare Valley and Margaret River and other Aussie rieslings…. very very impressed. Seek them out please…. Non wine wise I really am into my fantasy basketball team which is doing extremely well (thanks to Sciola, Bosh, Devin Harris, and Mo Williams) and building up for the fantasy baseball team…. (if you have any leagues that are open let me know, I’d love to kick you’re butt!)..also studying for my MSW.

    • Nice. I’ve been hearing nothing but good things about the Barone. Tom C said they age well too. I’m definitely picking up a bottle!

QOTD: To answer your question- wine (job), wine (thesis), and wine (after hours). Wow. I do like other things. I swear I do! 🙂

QOTD: My Wedding. I proposed to my girlfriend of nearly 5 years (we met in high school) on February 28th on a frozen lake in Northern Minnesota. It was amazing to say the least. But, now my life is nothing but wedding planning and trying to relax my soon-to-be mother-in-law!

    • QOTD: It’s interesting how many of these questions I’ve let slip by because, as you harp on constantly, you need chops. I don’t have wine chops yet, but I’m learning. That’s a great segue into my “scene” right now. I’m huuuuuuuuge into the indie / student game development scene right now. It’s chock full of people doing what they love because they love it, learning along the way, and the amount of passion in this scene is downright viscous.

      Gary,
As you will see in the months to come your child will take over your life. It is AWESOME. I cannot wait to come home on Friday evenings to spend the weekend with my wife and daughter. You will enjoy it too I am sure but that is my passion right now and will be for a long time.

I had a side question: You literally just spent the better part of five minutes singing that Montepulciano’s praises. Have you ever noticed a significant spike in a wine’s price after you’ve given it a very good review?

Solid show, I actually bought a couple bottles of the Cornacchia about a month ago. I thought it was that good when I tasted it. This is actually the first time apparently that I found a beautiful monster before you did, it’s the other way around all the time.

QOTD: 2 things, Wine of course, and now White Sox baseball. Only a few more weeks till opening day baby!
