line of the day – ‘this wine is very one-dimensional, and that dimension is water…and danger’

I find myself enjoying Gary’s asides, winks, frowns and general facial expressions almost more than the content these days. He was asking a lot of the Mottster to identify differences between the same wines opened at different times, and Mott duly appeared all at sea…poor Mott. Also a funny slapstick ending. Classic

i will give you the cliff notes –
33, living in switerland, came from the states (DC) been living in EU for 5 yrs now. was in france before this. i make art, have a 3yr old and am married to a french woman.
i am adore wine and have been collecting for about 3 1/2 yrs now. i probably have about 150 bottles of mostly french wine. lots of bordeaux, burgundy and rhone reds. whites include loire, burgundy and some sauterne. i have 1 bttle of 98 chante aluette from chapoutier.
that is that. i love cooking and spending time with friends. making paintings is good too.

    • Mr. Cook

Dumping the bad bottle at the end was classic! Love the show.

QOTD:I am currently in the process of developing a new RV Resort & campground in the Finger Lakes region of New York. Dealing with town codes and engineers makes the vino a great play at the end of the week. Since this is located in the heart of wine country here in NY I felt the need to be more educated in wine(been into it for 4 months only) so I tune in religously to WLTV. Love it.

I forgot the exact episode but liked the one where you described the wine as “one dimensional and that dimension is crap!”

QOTD: What’s my scene? Work, exercise, family, good home cooked meals and of course, wine.

      Hi Gary

Verdejo is spanish for the italian verdicchio??? Bad?! well try the some of the italian.

      Anyways another good show.

Please if you can give us information about grower how much they produce and how the vinification is.

Im a danish winefreak from Copenhagen, Denmark. I spend all my holidays in France and Italy to buy and taste wine and to enjoy their wonderfull kitchen. Alway searching for the “little big” wine that is not the obvious choice for Parker and millionaires. To pay my bills I work as IT advisor. Some of my favorites are white Sancerre (claude Riffault Thomas Labaille), white Saint Aubin 1 cru, Seguret village and many more

I WILL try to find that last wine. I will also try to find that 2nd wine. It sounds like a white wine I could really go for. I loved the Alamos Torrontes you did a few months back.

QOTD: My scene? Finishing my last semester of law school, enjoying only having class 2 days a week, helping my fiance plan our wedding for October, keeping my fingers crossed that my job stays intact for next September, and trying new, interesting, and value driven wines.

Thanks for all your great work on this show.

      Hi Gary,

Another fun show–thanks for all your hard work and enthusiasm! I can’t help but get excited, too, when you stumble upon a winner wine. I love that about wine–as big and varied as the sky, and you never know when a bolt of lightning will bring the Thunder! SHAZAM!

Unfortunately, that hasn’t happened to me in a while. I’ve been into wine for about 4 years now, and I feel like my palate has plateaud, or something. I’ve tried many things the world over, but now I find myself struggling to find the words, often second-guessing myself as I try to get past the basic melange of dark fruit, for example. Has that ever happened to you? Am I asking too much of my vino? Even you tend to use the same descriptors again and again–where’s the other half of the “Aroma Wheel”?

I recall your show using Sauternes to “wake-up” one’s palate, but I (selfishly) hesitate to open my case of ’03 Lafaurie-Peyraguey! And I need a better excuse than self-pity to crack my first serious Bordeaux, a 2000 Haut Batailley (when would you open that?). Maybe I should eat some dirt :-b

Actually, I think I just have the Winter Blahs. Anybody else out there ready for Spring? I’ve been branching out and drinking more up-and-coming reds this winter, checking out places like WA and giving Merlot another chance, but it’s not bringing the thunder for me. I know there’s great stuff out there, but I can’t always afford the Big Guns. I do have a ’03 Walla-Walla Northstar, but I want to wait on that, too.

I guess I really am more of a white wine drinker. I think wine (white or red) should be refreshing and juicy; a wake-up call, like fresh OJ in the morning. I’m looking forward to warmer weather, crisp Vihno Verde and Rose, and will try some Rueda, too!

Perhaps I’ve just been unlucky, but it bums me out how much mediocre crap is out there with 90 pt. scores on them! Who are these people, and who do they work for? Has RP, ST, JR, etc. EVER written a bad review? Is this a matter of politics, or politeness? That’s what I like about your show: you’re not afraid to bash it when it’s bad!

QOTD: I usually travel a lot for work, but it’s been slow lately, and I’m really enjoying just hanging out at home, reading and cooking new things, like Coq au Vin! Eating out all the time–and we’re not talking CRU–makes you realize how bad most restaurants really are. Like so much wine, no terroir, just generic franchised junk from coast to coast. Granted, there are many fine hole-in-the-wall eateries, but I usually don’t have the time or energy to seek them out after a 12 hr. day.

All we can do is keep trying. And watching your show….

    • QOTD: Right now, i’m all about making people realize how they can make the most out of their business, from a design point of view. Helping them to understand how all changed, from huge to subtle, can change how people view their business.
That and how they can use social media in conjunction with the above. How and Why.
I’m playing the “designer who truly cares about your company” angle.
      Because, honestly, i do.

      Oh, and rock climbing.

Thanks for trying the Verdejo , you try ’em, we buy ’em. That sounds like my style,on my list to try. I also had a montepuciano d’Abruzzo,Cantina Zaccagnini 05 about $20.and loved it.

QOTD;wine scene, always get at least one bottle I’ve never had.

Middle of the road show, decent for a Monday.

QOTD: As far as my scene its a three part answer as I am not sure where you were going. Work wise I am still in safety and industrial hygiene field which is pretty recession proof and makes for an intresting work day. Right now I am working extra/off hours while we are replacing some staff, so that isn’t that fun, but the money is good.

Hobbies/lifestyle: I would say my scene is pretty laid back as I am a typical gym rat during the week and enjoy the outdoors on the weekends, now that they warming up. Try and get to as many concerts as possible, which DC is good for. I also enjoy traveling throughout the year with work and for pleasure and am looking forward to Williamette and Walla Walla in the Fall.

Wine related: I am 2 years into the wine scene and I seem to enjoy more everyday. Right now my big phase has been odd or different higher end whites, as it seems to be my current kick to find whites that I enjoy. I am starting to help my wife host a series of tasting events with the local wine store in the area that she works at part time, so its a nice start “ITB” I guess.

      Gary,

really liked the show today. I am a novice at all things wine but this show is stoking some real excitement for me to branch out and try wine. I had a montepulciano wine this past weekend that blew my doors off so I was excited to see that on the show today. I’ll have to try and find that one at the local wine shop. thanks again for the show.

      Hey Gary,

The 48 hour difference was really interesting on the red wine. What is your opinion on the wine stopper pumps? Is this effective in preserving the state of the wine on the day it was opened? The manufacturers claim that is preserves taste for up to 2 weeks.

This episode was awesome. I loved the reference to the water with danger,Mott’s appearance, and pouring the bottle out at the end…all awesome.

hey Gary and everyone – Enjoyed the show and I’d like to get wines #2 and #3 to try.

QOTD: I just left “big pharma” as a research chemist and now I am slowly trying to pull something together in the food and wine business (wine bar, deli, who knows?). I am trying to educate myself in wine as much as I can both formally (following WSET courses here in London) and informally (your great show, drinking the stuff, etc.). After leaving my job, I am now doing quality workouts at my local gym, exploring London (as an ex-pat American), getting back in touch with old friends, cooking and spending better time with my wife.

PS: I tried drinking white wine at a warmer temperature as you suggested. Interesting. Very different tastes come our (normally hidden by the cold). So far just a budget S African Chenin Blanc. Certainly will explore further.

Like wine, if you only sample what the music industry is shoving down your throat, you will only be experiencing the mass produced crap. With both, you need to get off of the main aisle where the name brand displays are, and find the gems.
