EP 639 2 Rueda’s and a Montepulciano

Gary Vaynerchuk tries 2 white wines from Spain and talks about a wine that crushed him over the weekend.

Wines tasted in this episode:

2007 J&f Lurton Rueda WhiteRueda
2007 El Perro Verde RuedaRueda
2004 Barone Cornacchia Montepulciano D’abruzzo Le CosteMontepulciano d’Abruzzo

line of the day – ‘this wine is very one-dimensional, and that dimension is water…and danger’

I find myself enjoying Gary’s asides, winks, frowns and general facial expressions almost more than the content these days. He was asking a lot of the Mottster to identify differences between the same wines opened at different times, and Mott duly appeared all at sea…poor Mott. Also a funny slapstick ending. Classic

It’s really cool you’re getting back into the good old “tasting the wine twice before saying anything”. It gives a nice feel to the comments you have about the wine.

QOTD: I’m really into a site called YayArt (http://www.yayart.com) which we are pushing forward. It’s all about community based digital art that you can buy and hang up on your walls. Thx for the opportunity to do a little advertising 😉

Wazzup! Once again, one of the many reasons I watch the show, Gary brings new wines and places to the table. I had not heard, prior to this episode, of Rueda. Too bad it got off to a 67 start, but let’s not stereotype. I’m still going to seek out the Verdejo varietal.

QOTD: What do you mean by what is my scene? That’s a vague one, but I’ll try to keep this a short stretch (I tend to get carried away with my wordiness). Wine wise, I do not have a scene, or should I say, I have many. I’m discovering new stuff on a regular basis, and enjoying a lot of it. Be it, La Clape from the Coteau du Languedoc (which is fighting for AOC status), to Tokaji (I’m new to the ‘sweet wine’ scene) to Sangiovese di Romagna. Tomorrow, I am beginning my first ‘official’ wine course, looking forward to that! Other than that, I’m a blue collar, supermarket worker, I love music, books, movies…In short, I love life, and I believe that to be reciprocal.

Life will treat you the way you treat it!

      Be happy!

Here’s my scene: I gave up alcohol for Lent, and it’s tough, as usual. My other scene is just skipping the shows where you have guests: I just can’t stand it. But I continue to love “basic” episodes like today’s, just GV tasting wines, giving me hints on what to seek out and buy.

QOTD: I’m an artist and really got into some painters working in US and Canada about 2 years ago, they’re known as the New New painters, not a great name I know, but great artists. Also very much into a British band called Chikinki, again not a good name, but fab music. Recently got their second album – Brilliant. Prefer red wine, but thanks to you getting into whites more, not having them so cold is helping, again thanks, but not as warm as room temperature.

Don’t think I can get the Cornacchia in the UK. But well done for shouting out for a wine at that price, they’re the ones that really excite me, the pricey ones are often a disappointment. Great that it’s a varietal that is too easily dismissed.

Thanks for the show GV. My scene revolves around my two little girls (6 & 8) and my job search. I’m currently doing some financial consulting on the side and looking for a full time gig. I also dig: platform tennis, golf and getting in and out of the gym in under an hour.

    • Haha love the GV bobblehead…LOL! Best quotes from the show: “it is like casper the friendly ghost in the mid-palate, nothing” and “this wine can be appreciated now [reading from label]; or be an absolutley disgusting devistating effort, now”

QOTD: My scene other than what’s on my tumblr blog (click on name) is finding a new opportunity. It may be the perfect time to really develop something that I’ve wanted to do business-wise. Also I want to get back flying more now that I have the time, although that = money so need to balance those two. I’ve also been playing a lot of squash recenlty getting ready for the club championships where I play.

Personally, I have respected montepulciano for a long time and Im happy that you finally put it in the spotlight. Binomio is another great producer of montepulciano.
QOTD:Quadratic models and building quadratic functions from data. Just kidding. Modern classical music, left bank Bordeaux’s and giallo films from the 60’s and 70’s.

Today was just a reminder that there are a lot of really terrible wines out there. I appreciate your effort to separate the good, the bad and the ugly while not pulling any punches. This was the kind of show that really teaches what you advocate. It sparked my interest in some new wines I will try and one that I will not. Another gentle reminder to try something different and get out of old habits.

QOTD ? Expecting your first child is life changing but something even as exciting as that is getting ready for my granddaughter?s second birthday this Sunday! It is life?s double gift when you are young (children)and then when you are older (grandchildren).

    • No doubt about it Montepulciano d’Abruzzo is one of, if not THE best value wine in the world at the moment. What some of these producers are doing is insane. 90-93 Point wines for £10-£15. Buy it buy it but it now.

QOTD: I’m definately into food like I’ve always been but since I’ve been watching this show I’ve definately expanded my interest to include how beverages (of any type) go with food. I am really loving getting to try new wines but to be completely honest I’ve found something I really, really, really like and that is the dry gin martini. I don’t know if you’ll see this comment Gary but if you do I’ve seen the scotch, tequila, and vodka episodes and you absolutely have to do a show on gin. My favorite right now is New Amsterdam. I know its not a classic juniper driven gin but it seems like its just the smoothest best gin for making a martini with a twist (and the price point can’t be beaten either, especially when compared to its “premium” counterpart Tanqueray 10).

    • Now we know what danger tastes like. I’d always wondered.

And correct me if I am wrong, but this was a WOTM on the Forum some years back (IE, when there still was a WOTM …)

Scene = consulting for hire (it’s a good thing when everyone needs a grantwriter) + great food + great wine + trying to find a house with enough kitchen and basement for my great food + great wine + running an underground theater in my spare time + pondering whether I want to say f@#$ it and go to law school before I get too old for that sort of thing. Could be a lot worse.

    • I think this is my first post. My scene is sustainability. I’ve been working on farms a few years after graduating in ’07. I’m applying to crop science grad schools and want to teach people about sustainable agriculture. I’m more of a beer guy usually, brewing my own (most recently a nutella nut brown) and actually have grown hops as a research project.

That said, you promised more beer tastings a while back! I recommend the Sierra Nevada Porter and New Belgium’s 1554. They’re rocking my world right now.

In terms of wine, I think we should see more sparkling stuff…dry/half-dry Rieslings being my favorite, though they’re pretty hard to find locally. (Soviet Era German Rottkaepchen represent!) Also, I agree that you really need to make up some ground on reviewing value wines; maybe the Bandit Cab, after a good performance by the Bandit Pinot Grigio.

    • QOTD: Techno music (minimal, deep house & tech-house), yoga, San Francisco East Bay Urban Vintners wineries (I sling vino for JC Cellars), and traveling — I too will be traveling through South America on an extended trip later this year.

Speaking of Montepulciano, I recently had a couple bottles of the 2000 Crociani Vino Noible di Montepulciano, at a closeout steal price of $18, which was excellent. Loved the rustic Italian-ness of it!

Gary, another awesome show with a special appearance by Mott and keep reading the comments. Now that you are reading them your total comments will grow especially from viewers like myself. This is my first. A lurker has come out! Keep pulling us out of the shadows!
QOTD: I have recently discovered brewing loose leaf tea. What a difference from tea bags. Like the difference from drinking the L&F Lurton Rueda White and the El Perro Verde Rueda! Let us know when you start the most passionate tea show on the internet. It will become the second most popular show on the internet.
Thanks for taking the time out of your day to help inform us about wine.
