line of the day – ‘this wine is very one-dimensional, and that dimension is water…and danger’

I find myself enjoying Gary’s asides, winks, frowns and general facial expressions almost more than the content these days. He was asking a lot of the Mottster to identify differences between the same wines opened at different times, and Mott duly appeared all at sea…poor Mott. Also a funny slapstick ending. Classic

Gary, another awesome show with a special appearance by Mott and keep reading the comments. Now that you are reading them your total comments will grow especially from viewers like myself. This is my first. A lurker has come out! Keep pulling us out of the shadows!
QOTD: I have recently discovered brewing loose leaf tea. What a difference from tea bags. Like the difference from drinking the L&F Lurton Rueda White and the El Perro Verde Rueda! Let us know when you start the most passionate tea show on the internet. It will become the second most popular show on the internet.
Thanks for taking the time out of your day to help inform us about wine.

I’m trying to get into a little more excercise and get into decent shape, but I still am playing a goodly amount of videogames (Wii!), and I’m trying to learn Spanish.

    • Neil.; English ex-lurker…

Great show. Will look to see if the Montepulciano is available in the UK.

QOTD Music; (Indie rock, some 70 prog, some heavier stuff… Was absolutly pumped to find out Maynard from Tool is a wine maker in Arizona!! Opera) Glastonbury festival. Theatere especially Shakespeare. You tube. Partying hard with friends in various London dives. Gigs. And of course…

WINE!! Wine with friends, wine with food, wine tastings! Want to get into the UK wine trade. One day i want to be the new GV! (haha kiss ass…)

      laters Gary.

    • gomestar

Gary – THANK YOU for showing that Montepulciano d’Abruzo is not limited to the watery mass produced cocktail that looks more like cranberry juice than wine. Rejoice!

QOTD: I’m a statistician for an investment bank in NYC. Thrills. I just graduated from college (Cornell University) last year where I took a massive wine 101 class my senior year. I was into wine before that, but that sealed the deal as we tasted some killer wines from all over the world (including a 1975 Quinta Do Nuval, 1999 Pontet-Canet, 1999 Chateau Lascombes). I enjoy traveling (just got back from a wonderful trip to Italy), reading, and of course Wine Library TV.

PS – Awesome presentation at the Y last night, you took the time to answer each and every question and were amusing, engaging, and most of all you spread the thunder like nobody else. I hope you enjoyed the Gary V. wrapping paper my girlfriend so eloquently used to wrap your book. Thank you for all that you’re doing in the world of wine!

Gary, I disagree that the palomino grape is an inferior grape. It is the grape of distinction in Jerez.

…I’m just a caveman bagging you groceries. Taking care of the home front after mom’s passing. Getting to know dad and myself better. looking at my wine cooler over-stuffed with 2005 central coast wines. I need to have some friends over and put a dent in this thing.
Hey Gary, do you think there is a place for GrunerV in Cali. Perhaps along the slope of the eastern sierra??

Love the show. Have been a lurker for some time and will finally enter the comment fray. Learning a ton and loving the world of wine. Thanks for helping with my vino education.

QOTD- Into total joint arthroplasty (I’m an orthopaedic surgeon) and MMA (huge UFC fan). Orchestrating a move to the heart of the Willamette Valley for a life of family, surgery, the outdoors, and wine!

    • QOTD: I’m into hating my Masters program; but still loving life in Paris and my wine clubs and traveling ’round Europe and Asia tasting the juice; endlessly looking for a job or internship in the wine industry for this summer (Help! please! anyone!); longing for June so that I can spend 2 weeks back in my second home of Monterrey, Mexico, hangin’ out at my best friend’s bar McMullen’s; and as always loving music! The Prodigy this weekend in Paris and Girl Talk coming up in 3 weeks.

And last but not least, MISSIN’ THE FAM back at my first home of Columbus, Ohio, and especially my 1-month old niece Daphne Irene and her 3-year-old sister Sarah Catherine!

qotd; Im a very boring person gary, ive never been into much, a good book and some good food. but at least there is wine … Most things i like are slow, patient things, stuff you cant see day to day but only over time. Im into the big picture and the minute one. Im into farming, I think it’s the bed rock of all culture (that along with love and sex). growth, cycles, time, change, birth, and death, and birth again.

    • Great show as always Gary. I love how you can bring the descriptions of wines alive in a fun and unorthodox way. I also love the Mott made an appearance in this episode! It’s nice to see the man behind the camera.

QOTD: My current scene is craft beer. I live in Bloomington Indiana: a place well known for it’s competitive beer market. I am a homebrewer that just began reviewing beers for a blog I’m creating and really look up to your ability to describe wines in unique an approachable ways. I am trying to apply this same idea to beer. At the same time though I really want to learn more about wine. Although on a teacher’s salary it’s harder to approach wine because it’s generally a large investment than fine beer.

Besides beer, I’m enjoying my professional life, looking into buying my first home and will be traveling over to Europe (solo backpacking trip) for the first time ever (first time out of the country actually) on a Lilly Grant that I wrote this year! I’m super excited for the fine beer and wines and look forward to meeting tons of interesting and unique people.

      GV–

OH MY GOD. The entire time you were railing the J&F Lurton I was thinking about how I wish you would get so disgusted with a wine that you pour it out in front of the camera. I was going to leave a comment suggesting you do that to the next 60-something point wine. Thank you for the last five seconds of today’s show!

      Jeff S.

    • hahaha…great ending!!! I’m into getting out of town, and learning to speak Mandarin.

QOTD: also love the vegetal, pickle juicy wines you have shared with us.

My first Monetepulciano was on arrival at an incredible villa in Tuscany. So great!!

QOTD – In Michigan we are just trying to keep our employees working and waiting for spring. Saturday I’m volunteering to make maple syrup the old fashioned way. Maybe you should do a maple syrup tasting. Get some syrup from Canada, Michigan and Maine – don’t forget the pancakes.

QOTD: Trying new wines daily…just had a 2002 Puligny Montrachet from Laboure-Roi that tasted exactly like a jalapeno pepper! Ive heard you talk about that flavor profile before but I had never truly experienced it so prominently…not what I expected from a world class white burg…fascinating and fantastic!

      Gary –

Great shows at Cru! Thought there was a lot of interesting dialogue and passion between the both of you and the “wine nerd” aspects of the episode. It was interesting to see Robert’s interaction with you, because after having read some stuff from him in Wine Spectator, I totally thought he would be a different dude, I like him though.

QOTD: Right now I’ve been into the new U2 album, “No Line On The Horizon,” it rips, a little different than their other stuff, but with the pinch of Edge’s signature guitar thrown in. I’ve been watching the whole first week of Late Night with Jimmy Fallon on Hulu. He seems like a good guy. Been into Rioja and Portugal! Super interested in Rioja recently, also into Portugal, but having a harder time finding stuff. I am pumped for Prince’s 3 new albums! FUNK FEST! And I have been into going to New England breweries and drinking their Brewmaster beers (i.e. Long Trails, ‘Triple Bag,’ and ‘Coffee Stout.’ Gotta love Vermont!)
